After fiddling round with cargo planes and gliders I asked myself why spotter planes couldn't be set up to operate the same way: designated a hex to overfly, and a turn to do it in during setup phase. This might avoid some of the problems and abuse that onboard spotter planes seemed to suffer from in SP:WW2. The problem, as I see it, is the only way you can benefit from the spotter plane is by actually seeing the enemy units as they appear on the screen - so do you go for a maxxed out map and semi-recognisable enemy units, or a zoomed in clear map? Maybe judicious use of a screen grab might come in handy here.

The problem is that in WW2 spotter planes coordinated "operational fires" - not tactical close support. There are always exceptions, but spotter planes were not used in the way an SP player would use them, a mission we had difficulty coordinating in Viet Nam (heck today!) let alone WW2.
