May 22nd sees another major defeat for the Japanese on Ceylon... the mopping up process might not take that long after all I guess. -supply in the report already, even. Not good for the Japs, we might be in the end game on Ceylon. Interesting that the crushing air superiority is having an effect now even despite the rough terrain. The number of bombers available in 1943 is at least double the best I could manage in 42, and better models as well. It's making a difference. 23rd was another bad day for the Japanese... in fact the Allied pain train has been in town all week. Note the massive bombing of his troops on Ceylon - I think the time is ripe for a ground assault there. And one of his convoys reinforcing CENTPAC was reached out and touched by the USN bombers based at Tarawa, which is already demonstrating how much control it exercises around the surrounding areas. Also note the weakness of Rabaul, the airfield has been crushed - reported damage is 100 airfield and 50 port, its out for a while. TFs to assault Shortlands and Rossell Island are on the way, total force is quite light though as the fleet is mainly in dock - 2 CVE + escorts, one cruiser SAG (CL + 3 DD), one BB SAG (1 BB + 1 CL + 2 DD), one amphibious TF apiece. Very much reliant on LBA here, but then, that has been the approach in SOPAC for some months now. Fortune seems to favour the Japanese, though. :/ I had a few brushes with KB beforehand where the American CVs did quite well, but they were just the courtship rather than the marriage. [;)] Surface combat seems to be where the IJN consistently outplay the Allies - again and again I've seen surface battles where the Allies have more firepower, or are at least even, get horribly whipped, while the lone Japanese DD manages to sneak in, torp a BB in the middle of a SAG, and get away with barely a shot fired at her. It's like the Three Stooges runs my navy. [:(] I dont think I'll have naval parity until 1944 at this rate, I got 4 CVs alone (and that includes Essex) while I think he's down one CVL, pretty one sided in the carrier stakes. I'm not sure its such a huge deal, the tactic of beating a path with massed heavy bombers and making hops always within no further than single seat fighter cover seems to be working, but its a slow and unimaginative process...

It's been ages - it's June 13th now, and we've been at it hammer and tongs for some time. Looks like we're in a lull now but it's been a busy couple of weeks... CEYLON 33rd Division was annihilated near Koggala by two Indian tank regiments. The remainder of the Japanese forces on Ceylon have been driven all the way to the north, at Jaffna. They are being bombed and bombarded relentlessly and are out of supply, these guys will go into the bag as soon as I have moved a couple of Bdes to adjacent hexes to ensure no possible retreat path. When they surrender that will conclude the Liberation of Ceylon, and a catastrophic defeat for the IJA it was. A huge number of units have gone or will go into the bag after this, and for almost no Allied loss. A couple of Bdes are banged up a bit but even the worst off units are looking at 60 or so disablements total. Looks like the main Japanese LCUs destroyed or about to be destroyed are... 33rd Division 23rd Division 74th Infantry Regiment 12th Division 14th Naval Guard 2nd Heavy Art Battalion Sundry engineers and AA units So 4 divisions pretty much. It's quite possible that some cadres have been sub evacced away but even so, I know if the Americans, Indians, British or Aussie forces suffered that sort of loss it would be a catastrophe. Not sure how the IJA will weather that. INDIA/BURMA Events in China are slow but the Chinese are starting to look rather like a last stand is going on. As always the Allied priority seems to be forced into helping China out, as if the Chinese are defeated and the IJA freed up I can't see how the Western Allies can possibly beat these guys. Also the destruction of the American CVs at Milne Bay means that while I'm making progress in SOPAC and maybe CENTPAC still it's going to be a horrible, arduous slog. So a major operation to invade Burma is being hatched. With Ceylon in Allied hands, should be safe enough to commit major forces. Due to the catastrophe at Milne Bay earlier, I Australia Corps is being sent back to India again. Another American division is en route to SEAC after some PP expenditure. Most of the assault forces used on Ceylon will be drawn out of there and sent into Burma. The IJA have quite strong positions right at the border, for example the Imperial Guard and six other units are on the trail between Cox's Bazaar and Bengal. There are similar IJA concentrations in the wilderness hexes just south of Imphal. Allied recon suggests that the Burmese interior (ie the bases) are only lightly garrisonned however. Rangoon seems to have, at most, 2 divisions defending but I would expect rather less than that (reported 30,000 men but in a dozen units, probably a lot of engineers). I'm going to attempt a sort of naval version of Market Garden I think - an amphibious assault on Rangoon to coincide with an offensive along the Burmese Coast (Cox's Bazaar -> Akyab -> Rangoon). Might be able to paradrop Chindits in to specific lightly defended bases as well to support any Rangoon assault. The naval side will be tough as Port Blair is well built up - the US carrier force is going to have to be committed for any amphibious assaults. Thats fine though, especially as KB seems welded to CENTPAC atm (and if I see KB move from CENTPAC, I'll start atoll hopping forthwith). This will however hopefully cause a lot of his units to be cut off and useless, as out in the wilderness it'll be hard to redeploy them, and Rangoon will cut them off completely. Also its monsoon season too, so I think coast hugging is the way to go as far as supply is concerned. The push into Cox's Bazaar and Akyab can happen fairly quickly, I've already got units being pulled out of Ceylon and troops currently assigned to Bengal moving into position. That will happen ASAP. Any more daring assaults further south will have to wait for things to be in position, which means I would say 2 months minimum. CHINA Kweilin fell in the south, a little surprising, I expected a siege, but they fell on the first shock attack as soon as they were enveloped. It took the IJA a long time to surround the place and to be honest I didn't think he'd manage it, even with the Chinese all on 0 supply, but he did and it fell. 80,000 Chinese POWs. I assume his next target will be Changsha, given 100+ aircraft are strafing and bombing to great effect (200 casualties per day minimum). It's not very defensible given the open terrain. The ROCAF can do nothing as theres no supply to fly any aircraft. The only possible exception is at Chungking, where there is at least yellow supply. I've sent a P40K squadron over there to try and contest the Tojos as the IJ creep closer to Chungking itself hex by slow hex, but not really anything i can do at all. The entirety of China has been crippled since March 42 I think... I fear I wouldn't play again without houserules regarding strategic bombing in China, but the situation I have is particularly bad as the Chinese Army evaporated to uber-artillery in the first quarter of 1942, thus causing the loss of the entire northeast (Sian, being the important base). Still the IJA are not finding it that easy going, the issue is that every hex they take they take forever, as without supply the Chinese can hold ground, sorta, but never take it back. I'm hoping I can crack Burma before he cracks Chungking... SOPAC Constant fighting here until a lull a few days ago. A division equivalent is ashore at Shortlands and well supplied but the defenders also number a division and so we're deadlocked. Bombardments hurt us both. The initial landings were a bit fraught, as KB showed up. He missed the Solomons force but I dallied by a day when I really know I should've bailed and hit the CVEs Sangamon and Suwannee at Rossell Island, sinking both. My own stupidity, but the E does mean 'expendable' at least. :P However he's so close to Vella Lavella and Munda (Munda is a level 6 airfield now) that the air war is mostly in my favour. He's suffered horrendous losses trying to bomb supply convoys en route to Shortlands (one day he lost just shy of 200 aircraft). Beaufighters have been chopping up Japanese barges incredibly effectively. There's been a lot of surface combat as well, for once the IJN is not being shy - PT boats are in action almost every day against lone DDs raiding, but we've had some bigger battles too. The biggest was when CL Cleveland + 4 DD met two CA + 4 DD, which ended up in Cleveland being damaged and having to withdraw but one CA riddled with 6" and bombed 5 times by Dauntlesses next morning for heavy damage, not sure if she was sunk or not. With the major Allied fighter cover I've not been shy about committing big ships right up to Shortlands, but my sole BB, Idaho, was torped by a submarine and has also been forced to withdraw. This is bad, as BB Fuso is in the area and makes regular raids, but with Beauforts and Avengers able to reach one hex short of Rabaul he's playing with fire. Currently the Allied navy in the area is CL Nashville, CA Quincy, and a dozen DDs. I've ordered some BBs and cruisers down from San Francisco as I think bigger surface force muscle would be very effective here but its a long trip. And Cv Hiryu was reported hit by three torpedoes off Truk, but no a/c came up destroyed that turn, and the CV hasnt appeared in the sunk ships list. Not sure if thats a mirage or if it really happened. Allied plans are to reinforce Shortlands of course - got another division I can get there if the USN can keep the IJN away, and keep the air contested. P47s are at Noumea, can't wait for those puppies to be sent in. KB has been spotted lurking halfway between the Solomons and CENTPAC, but he seems to have been a bit cagey about using KB so near to so many Allied fighters. As he's actually fighting hard for Shortlands the damage he's suffered has been incredible. This is my games equivalent of RL Guadalcanal, I think. CENTPAC He tried to reinforce an atoll at the outside of B24 range with baseforces and the rest - the US managed a huge long range strike and 30 Liberators well trained in low naval attack wrecked the transports horribly while they were still laden - half a dozen sunk, 800 casualties. Aside from that it's been very quiet here, just daily uncontested Allied bombing of Mili. I've moving some troops up to Arorae and will try a move on Mili when KB is busy elsewhere, but with it known to be lurking a days full speed movement from at least Tarawa, I'm pinned atm. THE FLEET My own logistical incompetence has meant Attu Island is out of fuel, so the submarine offensive against the Home Islands is on pause for a bit as AOs tramp across from Alaska. The main body of the fleet is doing OK, Hornet is looking at <30 days to fix. Seems very DD and BB heavy when I skim my ships, the war has been hard on my cruisers and CVs. [:(] Still trying to avoid any major actions until 1944 to be honest, the mathematics of reinforcements compels me to avoid direct battle still. I'm going to move the bulk of the USN to the Bay of Bengal I think to support this Rangoon thing as soon as Hornet is fixed. Hopefully the main Japanese CV force will not be around for that, and by the time that is concluded, it should be very late 43/early 44 and we might be able to actually stand up to KB. Finally.

June 17th Minor flareup in SOPAC - I mined Torokina with aerial mining, caused an immediate response from the IJN but not a good one for them. A Jap DMS was sunk off Torokina, and he sortied cruisers as well to try and intercept another Allied landing at Shortlands, didnt go well for him though as they tried to go around the minefield and were caught in daylight, CA Kinugasa was bombed and torpedoed and sank along with two DDs, with a CL hit three times by 1000lb bombs as well. P47s are uncrating at Lunga but their range is too short, until I get Shortlands under control anyway. Major IJA offensive in China too, he's really pushing hard and has apparently moved a lot of his airforce into China. We're talking multiple 100+ bomber raids. The Chinese are suffering but holding so far, they don't feel at all 'firm' to me. I've resorted to desperate measures, two P40K squadrons are now in Central China on a one way trip (no drop tanks to get back!). Kalemyo, on the Burmese border, was built up to a level 5 airfield with this moment in mind - I'm going to airlift an RAF wing there and then base Wellingtons and Mitchells there, they can reach the central Chinese plain, question is can they really be effective with aerial supply only? Japs still holding out on Ceylon and the Allies are exhausted, I'm giving them 3-4 days rest and then I'll be shock attacking again and trying to destroy them.

26th June 1943 BURMA/INDIA The last Japs have been killed on Ceylon, so the liberation is finally complete. Lots of orders being given as the Allied forces in India are set up for their new objectives - a lot of baseforces in southern India being redeployed to Bengal, a lot of squadrons being moved to Bengal, a lot of ground units being railed around. Ships en route to Ceylon to move excess divisions out to where they can be better used. Dacca, Calcutta, Diamond Harbor and Chittagong are going to be the main airbases for this Burma op, Jorhat, Ledo and Dimapur are all holding transport aircraft. Remarkably short of fighters, and what fighters I have are Hurricanes mostly, but the Japs are not really even attempting to contest the air over Burma so far beyond raids with Tojos. Only Rangoon is solid. I've started an advance on Cox's Bazaar already with what Indian forces were held in reserve in Bengal. They should advance to contact in about ten days or so. Other interesting thing, I'm going to move whatever Wellington bombers I can find to Kunming, in China just over the border. From Kunming they can bomb Ichang, which is where his main air effort is being launched from, with full bombloads. Wellingtons, being 2E, are presumably a bit nicer on the supply, and with service rating 2 are good at round the clock bombardment. Hurricanes are going too for air defence. 100 odd transport aircraft are flying supply to feed the aircraft. I'm not pretending that this will be decisive but I have to /try/ to help the Chinese before its all over. Reinforcements mean the RN have a credible presence in the area again finally, BB Prince of Wales, half a dozen cruisers, a dozen DDs or so. Means a single, very solid SAG with James Somerville in command. The geography of the Bay of Bengal limits the scope for surface combat though I think. CHINA He's bogged down again to an extent. 'For now'. A lot of Chinese units in his rear areas that need to be mopped up, but he will mop them up eventually and then the advance will resume. He's one hex from the central Chinese plain in one area - I might have the Allies in India try a concerted bombing attempt if he actually ventures out into the open. Japanese attempts to move on Changsha have caused me to abandon the (essentially worthless) bases next to Changsha, in open hexes the Chinese are being punished by air power. They are going to pull back into the forested hexes and then dig in, leaving Changsha itself, alone, held. The Chinese army feels very fragile to me. SOPAC Shortlands under siege, the Allies have been reinforced with another regiment and some combat engineers. Attacks have reduced the Japanese fortifications to 1, I expect Shortlands to fall fairly soon, which will then mean my new toy, the P47, will get to fly over Rabaul. CA Mikuma torpedoed a few days ago near Lae, CV Kaga missed by a sub near the Marianas, not sure what its doing up there? Rossell Island has been resupplied, he's not attempted to intervene. It's out of Tojo range of his bases, I think this is quite significant (Milne Bay is in Tojo range of Port Moresby and Buna in comparison) and I should've considered this before. I guess the Spitfires will punish any unescorted raids he may send. Extra RAAF baseforce is one hex from landing, not sure if that will cause him to act. Lots of air clashes over Rabaul, can't say the Allies are doing that well, even Corsairs got manhandled quite badly over Rabaul today due to being outnumbered so heavily. He's currently resupplying Rabaul so max effort is being made, it's been costly but without reward for the Allies so far unfortunately. I need those P47 squadrons to add to the pressure, I think. Overall I think the advance is slow but grinding away more or less as planned. After Shortlands, Torokina, then it'll be decision time where to make the next hop. I might attempt to bypass Rabaul. CENTPAC Very quiet of late. Some Jap convoy activity at the atolls, I assume the Marshalls are being reinforced. Allied USN B24s are bombing Kwajalein, Roi-Namur and Maloelap every so often, IJ air units seem to be limited to Emilies, but they have torps so thats dangerous enough. Allied ground units are being convoyed to Arorae and Tabiteua, in readiness for the next hop. THE FLEET/THE GREAT REALIGNMENT 4 CV + 1 CVL + 3 CVE have left San Francisco and are en route to Balboa. I Australia Corps is departing Perth right now, some have already gone in fact. The Burma op is definitely on now, "preparations are being made", orders are given. I'll be sawing away at the Burmese border before the navy is ready, so the fleet may arrive late, but if there is a precipitous Japanese collapse in Burma thats a good thing, and the CVs have nowhere better they could be, IMHO. Some USN heavy ships (BB Washington plus some slow BBs plus some cruisers) are being peeled off and sent to SOPAC where there seems to be some opportunity for surface ships, even slow ones, under a powerful LBA air umbrella.

Seized Mili atoll on the 29th, but the Japanese supersamurai showed their complete mastery of naval warfare. On the 28th BB Mississippi was torpedoed 4 times by an I-boat off Mili, making me think of how back in 1942 a US CV was torpeoded umpteen times by an I boat and sunk. I almost called off the op right then but figured, no, lets proceed. Next day Mississippi, who was still able to make 16 knots and was not in danger of sinking, is torpedoed again by the same sub, twice, and sinks. And then during the day despite being 4 hexes from the nearest Allied airfield and about 12 from Kwajalein, the Jap airforce sorties while the Allied airfarce does not, and a handful of Emilies torpedo CA Vincennes half a dozen times. If my airfarce was one tenth as effective as this at naval air combat I'd have won the sea war by now. [8\|][8\|][8\|] I did take Mili, but this is ridiculous. The only campaigns where the Allies have done OK are the ones that dont involve naval combat.

1st July 1943 BURMA/INDIA Bill Slim is in charge of the 14th Army now, one half of which (XIV Indian Corps I think) has advanced to contact one hex from Cox's Bazaar. They will be attacking tomorrow, not sure what he's got there, hopefully not enough. The other half of 14th Army is another Indian corps around Imphal, they will advance should the Japs appear to be on a general retreat. I Australia Corps and some yanks are still en route, I still have plans to take Rangoon in a coup de main in ~ 50 days or so. Slims objectives, for now, are merely Cox's Bazaar and possibly Akyab, but I'm pushing anyway to see what happens. Japanese air over Burma with the exception of Rangoon is quite limited, some Tojos, no bombers. RAF Wimpeys and Liberator IIs have been bombing targets in China with some effectiveness. IV India Corps on Ceylon is being stripped, many components of it ending up on the mainland to be added to 14th Army. US CVs are a couple of days from Balboa, I Australia Corps is mostly still in Australia, but both are destined for this theatre. Fairly optimistic, convinced Burma is Japanese weak spot atm. CHINA Backs to the wall, massive Oscar strafing runs are mowing down the Chinese like grass. P40Ks in the central area are putting up slight resistance but against huge Tojo sweeps it's almost token to be honest. P40Ns arrive soon, not sure if this will be sufficient to stem the tide, might need a t-bolt squadron in China to be honest. Not much advance on the ground though some of the Chinese units in his rear have been mopped up now. SOPAC P47s in action for the first time. One squadron of t-bolts was sent to Shortlands - air skill 70 but inexperienced. in one day of fighting that squadron made two aces. The Tojo has met its match. The day after that he declined to sweep again. Apparently he has third generation fighters arriving soon though so I'm not sure how decisive the Thud is going to prove long term, but right now, it's doing good! P38s sent to Rossell Island where they can sweep Port Moresby or Buna, not actually done this yet but its on the cards. A lot of Allied barge activity as Rossell Island and Shortlands are supplied, barges are proving very effective though and very light on fuel. (Fuel in SOPAC is a constant issue.). Lunga is now out of range of Japanese bases at Kavieng and Manus where he seems to be building up another defensive line, so I'm in the process of moving the heavy bombers up the Solomons chain, an agonisingly slow process given how long they take to uncrate. Ultimately Shortlands is going to be the next bomber base, it's the only airfield big enough to really stack high with heavies, but for now spreading the heavies around the Solomons will have to do. The heavies have been bombing Buna and Rabaul with some effect. Major effort to move materiel to Shortlands, extra EABs, extra baseforces, AA guns, some New Zealand tanks, old fashioned supply, in barges and in convoys. The t-bolts stopped his efforts to interdict by air cold, the IJN has reverted to type and is in hiding after the pounding his cruisers got last time. Not too optimistic about further advances, Rabaul is as tight as a drum and there are multiple, well developed airfields all over the theatre - Manus, Kavieng, Buna, Lae... The USN is not going to be able to offer much help after what is in effect a double reverse Midway. It's going to be a hellish slog. The US push in SOPAC is tying up a lot of Japanese combat power, though, especially aircraft. Better the Tojo storms are down here fighting Corsairs and Jugs then in Burma fighting Hurricanes, I guess. CENTPAC As mentioned, Mili atoll was seized in a coup de main, but at heavy cost. Goddamn Emilies are lethal, LRCAP is useless, and you cant bomb Emilies into submission like you can with Netties because the buggers are floatplanes. Going to have to use transport aircraft to reinforce Mili to the point I can base fighters there, Wildcats will do, but the transports are well behind the lines and having to be brought up.

7th July 1943 BURMA/INDIA 14th Army defeats what used to be the Imperial Guard (its renamed to 2nd Guard Division or some such by 1943) one hex from Cox's Bazaar, and resumes the advance. The Japanese around Cox's Bazaar and Akyab appear to be falling back, the Japanese in the Burmese interior seem to be holding fast. No sign of much in the way of Japanese air activity in northern Burma - Hurricanes are sweeping the northern Burmese bases without opposition. Not many Allied heavy bombers in theatre but there are lots of Blenheims and B25s,and they were more than adequate in bombing the tar out of the Imperial Guard. Still shipping units from Ceylon to the mainland, 14th Army isnt fully up to strength yet by any means. Got a P47 squadron uncrating at Ledo, going to send them to China. Heavier recon of Port Blair, Rangoon and the surrounding areas convinces me that Japanese defences in the rear are fairly light, I'm estimating about a division at Rangoon and perhaps as little as a brigade at Port Blair. CHINA Not much change since last time, there's still sporadic fighting as he mops up units in his rear. He's pretty much done with that though, so I expect the next advances soon. I just got a huge wedge of Chinese reinforcements due to respawns, they are being sent out, some to Chengtu, some south, a lot staying in Chungking. SOPAC P47s and Corsairs sweep Rabaul and the surrounding bases, his CAP suffered 18 losses for 0 kills on the Allies when he tried to make a fight of it, he's responded by standing down so far. The Thunderbolt clearly has the ability to transform the air war again, and there's quite a lot of them coming off the production line! Still engaged in shifting air power from Guadalcanal up to Munda and Shortlands. Rossell Island has been built up now, and I'm going to nudge forward, to Deboyne Islands or similar, to put Buna under potential P47 range. Today (the 7th) I saw a whole bunch of ships at Rabaul, 27 ships, no ID despite recon. I suspect they are barges. I've ordered another major fighter sweep over Rabaul anyway, and jacked up the range of the SBDs and attack bombers, just in case its more than barges. CENTPAC Not much change here from the Allied PoV. Mili and Makin have been resupplied with fuel, this means I can use PTs and barges at will, so I'm now busily barging SeaBees over to Mili. Allied air power is mostly set to naval/rest, and did catch a few AKLs deep in the Marshalls to deadly effect, but not really anything of tactical significance I fear. KB has been sighted repeatedly in the Marshalls, escorting convoys by the look of it (those AKLs were a convoy that strayed a little too far). A half dozen Liberators had a go, but suffered heavy losses as might be expected and no hits though a couple of bombers did at least get to drop their loads. I guess he's spending some significant effort adjusting and reinforcing his defences here. For my part I'm waiting for Mili to receive SeaBees and more aviation support - most of the Marshalls will be in normal range for B25s from Mili, which should mean I can lock down his shipping unless he keeps KB on station. THE FLEET/STRATEGIC MOVEMENT The fleet arrived in Balboa today and will be headed off for Cape Town. CVEs and LSTs are already en route to Cape Town from Balboa. The first wave of troops from 1st Australia Division are about 2/3rds the way to Diego Garcia now, but there's still a lot more further behind, including a divisions worth waiting in Perth unfortunately.

13th July 1943 BURMA/INDIA 14th Army takes Cox's Bazaar, the Japanese evacuate just in time. They are now pressing on towards Akyab. Several divisions are being reorganised in the rear meanwhile, several divisions being peeled off of Ceylon to be sent to the front, and some being sent to Cochin - the ones who will be involved in planned amphibious assaults. Air war is going my way in Burma at least, lots of Hurricane sweeps over Burma, he is challenging sometimes with Tojo LRCAP but the Hurris seem able to keep up with the sweep advantage and with numbers. Ordered some convoys to deliver fuel to Diamond Harbor and Calcutta, which are both totally devoid of fuel. Ordered some AKs to ship supply to Cox's Bazaar now its mine, not sure how fast supply can be pulled over the trail but it doesnt look fast enough to me so far for the 2000 odd AV 14th Army. XXIV Indian Corps, which is only about 500 AV atm, but will be more when reorganisation is done, is ordered to move up to Imphal. I Australia Corps is about halfway to Diego Garcia now mostly. More to come though, still in Perth. [8\|]. The USN is 17 days from Cape Town, so I guess 45 days or so before all is ready to start some invasions, I imagine I Australia Corps will not be entirely over even then, but I should have enough firepower to strike. Really looking forward to this operation, I think this amphibious deep strike might seriously dislocate his SEAC defence Inchon style. Doesn't look like he has any major fortifications or airfields south of Rangoon to speak of either, aside from places like Bangkok which are quite distant. CHINA Looks like most of the Jap airforce is in China these days, there must be about 400 bomber sorties a day, mostly with no air defence whatsoever. The Chinese are bleeding and its all I can do to try and prevent an all out collapse. There are P40Ks at CHungking, but they don't have the range to hit his airfields and LRCAPPing Chinese LCUs just means they are annihilated by Tojo sweeps, so as a strategy that is clearly a bust. To that end, the RAF/USAAF in India has been attempting to aid China. B24s at Ledo can hit Sian, just, and they have been doing that, with half bombloads. It has had the effect of him being forced to defend Sian with Tojos. I've just moved up a P47 squadron to Chengtu as well, which has the range to sweep Sian. I'm hoping a combination of these two assets might at least make him pay a bit, and maybe reduce the deluge of bombs falling on the hapless CHinese slightly. SOPAC P47s and Corsairs now at Vella Lavella and Shortlands have done an excellent job closing down New Britain, he's starting to decline to fight over Rabaul now. They can even reach Kavieng too, there have been some devastating sweeps. The B24s are mostly in action now at Munda. At Rossell Island, six hexes from Milne Bay, the SeaBees are done building the airfield and now I've got B25Gs, P47s and P38s there able to range as far as Lae. Resupplying his many bases here is going to be a real nightmare for him, and based on past form I suspect he won't bother, so it won't be too long before a big slice of Japanese Empire will be bypassed. Next objectives, Feni Island, which is 2 hexes from Rabaul, lightly defended, a suitabel airfield, and isolated by the water so he can't march his considerable ground forces overland to counterinvade. Capturing that means its curtains for Kavieng and New Britain I think, we can then start headed west. The other objective is Woodlark Island, near the eastern tip of Papua New Guinea, which will be able to increase my dominance of the seas around Lae and Buna. This is actually in US hands already but is not built up, so I'm barging SeaBees over there from Rossell Island already. CENTPAC Mili now is an airfield 1 and has an F4 squadron. He's being a pain with his Zeroes though, constant sweeps. It's being supplied by barge to be safe. The next hop is Maloelap, or maybe Majuro, its about 4 hexes from Mili, but seems to be very dangerous to me, I'm in no great rush I must admit given what the Emilies did last time. USN heavy bombers are trashing his Netties at Roi-Namur, I'm going to keep doing that, keep building up Mili, possibly we can do the next hop in a month or two. I think progress in the Gilberts is actually pretty good, given it's been done without CVs.

Figured it's been a while since we had a screenie, here is the current SOPAC map. Torokina has just fallen. The Solomons is a hive of Allied activity, well garrisoned, with pretty much the advance guard of everything in the US armory. The t-bolt has proven itself to be deadly, it eats Tojos for lunch, and as you can see (there is a Thunderbolt squadron selected so you can see it's range circles) that means all of New Britain is going to be a very dangerous place for any flying or sailing Japanese types. Things are looking bad for Buna, Milne Bay and Port Moresby too, but if I can finish off developing Woodlark Island I can really put a twist on him on the eastern side of Papua New Guinea. I'm not planning on landing in New Britain, looks far too dangerous to me. I have a shortage of LCUs. Going to try and bypass as much as possible from here on in. 23rd July 1943 BURMA/INDIA Air superiorty remains mine completely. He's tried night bombing Colombo but there isn't much there. Most of the Allied airpower has been busy in a ground support role this last ten days. 14th Army has advanced to Akyab now, but is exhausted and was unable to promptly storm the base. He's evacuating, but I'd like to hurl him out for the sake of wrecking the Imperial Guard some more. The other corps of 14th Army is moving up to Imphal with the intention of crossing the border into Burma in August some time to increase the pressure. Regarding my designs on Port Blair and Rangoon, the first units of I Australia Corps are here and there is about 2 divisions ready on the Indian mainland for an assault, but the naval assets arent in position yet and won't be for another 3 weeks I would guess. Japanese forces are pushing east into China, attacking Paoshan. I've been forced to order its abandonment as the Japanese have managed to push back the units guarding the flanks, to my surprise as its in the mountains. CHINA No significant change on the ground, he's generally advancing from Kweilin in the direction of Changsha but has so far been checked at every turn. First major air raid on Chungking though, he sent in ~50 Lilies and ~30 Sallies plus Oscar sweeps and escort, they met the P40K and P40N squadrons I based there from 10th USAAF and were cut to red ribbons, he lost >50 aircraft in the air that day, mostly Lilies. He's not done that again. Allied air efforts in China pretty much ineffective too. SOPAC Aggressive P47 sweeps over New Britain are bagging huge numbers of Tonies and Zeroes. He's fairly defensive in response, no bombing attempts on his part. The Allied navy sortied in the last ten days, 3 DDs to Lae to try and intercept a convoy unloading there, and 2 CL 2 DD to try and take out two DDs that were at Buna. There was so much faffing and dallying despite full speed orders that by the time the Allies hit he'd long gone. However, the Japanese airforce tried to bomb the 3DD as they were within CAP range of Shortlands and were roughly handled by Corsairs and P47s while scoring no hits, so some good came out of it. An attempt at minesweeping by night didnt pan out very well, I sent in a couple of DMSs with orders to retire at Feni Islands, expecting them to pull back by daytime, but they lingered and were bombed, one DMS sunk. I imagine the assault on Feni Islands will happen very soon now, just getting the required shipping into position. I think I'll wait for Torokina to be up and running for LRCAP purposes. On the ground I'm back to moving up baseforces, from Ndeni to Torokina this time. CENTPAC Allied efforts to resupply and reinforce Mili with barges has drawn a response from the IJN. He attempted a raid with DDs and CLs but PT boats saw him off and stopped him from reaching the barges (which were full of SeaBees, so good). A second attempt by the IJN a few days later resulted in a movement glitch just as I moved an SBD squadron up to Mili - these guys were not crack unfortunately with naval bombing around 50 on average, so 24 Dauntlesses achieved just two hits on a CL, but it'll teach him to back off a bit. BB Washington and a bunch of cruisers constitute the Allied naval presence here atm, they sortied briefly into waters near Mili a few days ago in the hope of finding his CLs in the night, but no joy. The battleship is currently based at Tarawa under heavy CAP - probably won't risk her in any invasion fleets, BBs are just too vulnerable to submarines and Emilies. THE FLEET CV Constellation and CV Stargazer have arrived ([:D][:'(][:D]), they are off to the Bay of Bengal as with the rest of the CV force. From here on in I seem to get a new carrier of some description every three months or so, at a minimum. Just a case of keeping them alive until 1944 I guess...

The Dauntlesses at Shortlands and attack bombers from all over SOPAC (some of them flew a very long way, I was impressed) found a troop convoy unloading at Rabaul and blew hell out of it. An ill fated convoy, as I knew those babies were coming - one of those Marus was torpedoed by a submarine just off Kavieng so I had advance warning. 5th August 1943 Fun turn. BURMA/INDIA Not much change on the ground. Akyab has been reinforced with an RN baseforce, so it has some aviation support and naval support but the airfield is a wreck and there are no engineers, I cant base aircraft there just yet. In the air its totally one sided. That said Rangoon is a tough nut and I've not dared bomb it aside from night raids, I need to get Akyab up and running so I can start the deadly P47 sweeps. This is really a prerequisite of landing there. I got plenty of time though, CVs are 3 days out, transports havnt even reached Cape Town yet, we're probably looking at landing in Rangoon early to mid September. CHINA Things took a massive lurch for the worst lately - he managed to force open a hole in the Chinese front and then poured through half a dozen divisions. The total absence of available recon and the fact that to have an LCU sitting in the clear hexes is to invite annihilation means I didnt spot this utnil it was far too late. So Japanese divisions have burst through all the way to Chengtu and almost surrounded Kienko. The only plus is, he is also wary of staying put in the clear hexes as B24s from Ledo have been bombing him constantly. Changsha was also surrounded when the CHinese guarding the road behind Changsha were routed, to my surprise (0 supply does tend to do that though) by the Japanese envelopment force. Judging from the daily grind I would say 75% of his active airforce is in China now, its all quiet bomb wise aside from the Chinese being relentlessly bombed and strafed by 100+ aircraft raids. Can China hold out until the Allies can meaningfully help? D-Day in Burma is in a month, say another months consolidation - 2 months. Probably can, but what will left? SOPAC Japanese surface ships raided Woodlark Island just as some SeaBees were unloading from barges, they sank the lot and the SeaBees went to Davy Jones' Locker. A sad thing for the pixellated families but... there's no shortage of SeaBees so I just sent some more over, Zhukov style. He was loitering around Lae looking for another chance but he didnt get it - he got attack bombered instead. CL Abukuma was bombed and hit twice and then the damaged cruiser was attacked by an S-boat as he tried to pull back, three torp hits -> sunk. Aside from that its whack-a-mole with B24s, but he's largely abandoned SOPAC. I think his plan is to only transfer to a base the day before action, that certainly seems his plan lately. The assault force for Feni Islands left Munda today, ETA a couple of days. B24s are battering (empty) Rabaul and Kavieng airfields mostly in preparation. CENTPAC First off a submarine reported seeing carrier aircraft near Ponape, so KB might be hiding there. Some Jap cruisers were chased off by long range Catalina bombers, they didnt hit anything but the pucker factor was too high for him to stick around apparently. Launched the invasion of Maloelap a few days ago, they (65 odd cargo ships, almost no warships) are currently one hex from the atoll and under heavy LRCAP. My attempts to bomb his airfields didnt seem to stop him that much, 12 Emilies and 27 Lilies scrambled and hit the convoy but were chewed up bad by the LRCAP, all the Emilies and 2/3rds of the Lilies were shot down in exchange for two 100kg bomb hits which only did 19 sys damage to the AK concerned. I'm keeping the BBs and cruisers back as the Emilies /will/ hit one if they break through the thin LRCAP, and then I /will/ have a huge armoured fortress sitting in a drydock for six months. I've decided to avoid using a surface cover force, on the grounds that the Emilies are scarier than an IJN that will probably not show, not in SAG form anyway. I'm expectign KB to materialise, so a large proportion of the Allied bombers are set to naval search, and hopefully the troops will be mostly ashore in one turn. OUR BRAVE AND VALIANT RAIDERS!!! I sent CL Mobile with AO support deep into Japanese territory, to Iwo Jima, which at present looked remarkably undeveloped. Been a while since we had updates. August 17th 1943 BURMA Finally got Akyab developed to the point that I could base P47s there. They swept Rangoon, shot down some Tonies - next day Rangoon had been evacuated. :D Where the P47 flies, the Japanese fear to. Not much progress on the ground, its all so slow. The CV force is mostly at Cochin now, and sufficient LCUs are available for my Rangoon assault. What is missing is the division earmarked for Port Blair, which is just loading up at Cape Town right now with plenty of prep points. I think I won't bypass Port Blair unfortunately, if its still in Jap hands my position in Rangoon will be highly vulnerable, and when his CVs arrive, if they arrive, conditions will be extremely unfavourable for a naval clash. So unfortunately it looks like I gotta wait the best part of a month still. [>:][:(] SOPAC Been a busy couple of weeks. The IJ airfarce thrashed the hell out of two convoys, one near Feni Island and one near the Deboyne Islands. Allied LRCAP is very unreliable, sometimes its fine sometimes... not. These two times it was not. One base force at Deboyne was practically wiped out as 5 out of 6 APs carrying it were sunk. The hit at Feni was on unloaded AKs but anothre half dozen sunk. Then the Japs hit some DDs at Feni but mostly missed and were mauled by Allied fighters, so he didnt get it all his own way, in fact he was moaning about unsustainable bomber losses. He did admittedly lose 70 twin engine bombers in one day at one point, so these strikes, though painful, were somewhat pyrrhic victories. ..and there is no shortage of Allied sealift at this point. CENTPAC Probably the central point of the war atm, my leap to Maloelap was quite a long leap, and KB intruded. Allied LRCAP was weak and casualties were heavy, however most of the LCUs got ashore. 90% of one combat engineer LCU was decimated and most of the tanks I had earmarked for the invasion didn't manage to land, I had to abort them. This left a single marine regiment on the atoll, opposed by a brigade of Japs behind level 5 forts. The opening shock attack was bad for the marines, and I was pondering evac. However, I managed to resupply them by barges from Makin and while the Japs did try and interfere with some destroyers SBD-5s from Makin sunk a couple and kept him away. Meanwhile Venturas and PBY Liberators were bombing Makin relentlessly. The old 21 knot BBs had a go with a nuclear bombardment too. And in the end, today, the Marine regiment walked over the out of supply and shell shocked defenders to my own surprise. [;)] Really got a twist on him now in the Marshalls and in SOPAC, I think. Going to start trying to push west towards Papua New Guinea most likely in the next phase of the campaign.

The Japanese defenders in Burma - I estimate about five or six divisions worth - look pretty well fixed in place at the front now by 14th Army's advance. However 14th Army has mostly stalled, I think - while I would anticipate further progress from them alone it would be slow going. The time is very much ripe for my amphibious assault on Rangoon, which looks comparatively empty. An extremely significant number of Japanese troops looks like they could be cut off by such a move. Work is afoot on shifting baseforces to Akyab so bombers can be based there, it's already a level 6 airfield, kind of the Japanese to build it for me. There is a gigantic armada building up here - all the Allied CVs, and a pretty huge Royal Navy SAG - five divisions prepping in Cochin for Rangoon, another US division en route which is prepping for Port Blair... the laggers are the Americans headed for Port Blair, they are en route from Cape Town and will be on map in 14 days... so we're talking about three weeks before D-Day. It seems unlikely that the ground situation in Burma will be significantly changed in that time - it should give me time enough to get Akyab up and running though. Yeah, I'm trying to basically slowly envelop his bases and drive out the supply, but it's not so easy necessarily. I think now I've taken Maloelap most of his airfields in CENTPAC will be within point blank Dauntless range so they are all just going to wither away. Similar situation in SOPAC, where Rabaul has been totally shut down by the huge airfields at Shortlands and Torokina. Any Japanese convoy to resupply Kavieng or Rabaul is going to get slaughtered. I think the Marshalls will be rolled over as soon as I get LCUs to prep now, the nearest base he has which can be supplied is Eniwetok which is a long way away. Papua New Guinea is going to be harder though, he has a lot of mutually supporting airfields and he's still able to supply Lae with convoys at the moment. I'm trying to edge closer under an LBA umbrella but it's precisely that sort of leap - to Gasmata perhaps - which he can punish horribly. LRCAP is really unreliable over 2-3 hexes it seems, and Gasmata is about 5 hexes from the nearest Allied base, so any air cover is going to be thin. The only plus is that it's rare that air power alone stops a convoy, by the time its daytime they've usually mostly unloaded so the troops are ashore. All he can do is sink AKs and APs, and I have bajillions of them. Still, the Zhukov Approach isn't very in keeping with the Allies so I still feel bad every time half a dozen APs gets Nettied.

September 2nd 1942 Quiet-ish, but just out of sight, the unicorns are gathering. BURMA/INDIA The fleet is massing! Gathered at Colombo for refuelling are all the Allied CVs. ~1200 carrier aircraft. Seems like a lot to me... Transport wise, we have 3 amphibious TFs. One is a 100 ship TF carrying four Allied divisions, this is the main Rangoon assault force. Another is a ~50 ship TF carrying about another division and a bunch of engineers, these will land after Rangoon is taken. And the third is a 25 ship TF holding a division which is almost fully prepped for Port Blair. Allied pickets between Sumatra and Allied waters have picked up nothing. No IJN submarines around, no 'TF spotted', no IJ aircraft are in range of Ceylon at present. AFAIK, the foe suspects nothing. Port Blair has been bombed and swept heavily from Akyab, it looks like he's abandoned it as an airbase. The lack of rail lines no doubt makes it an unfavourable base for him to use. Rangoon was swept a while ago and immediately abandoned but I think he's moved back there now, I'll be working on that in the mean time. On the ground 14th Army has stalled quite badly, so I'm counting on this invasion to reopen the Allied advance. Hopefully five divisions landing in his rear across his supply lines will have a major dislocating effect... CHINA The rout continues. IJ forces are now one hex from Chungking though not in strength yet. He did a recon-by-paratrooper on Chungking as well. 2000 AV there and actually supplied, I don't think it'll just roll over like everything else. And an attempt to daylight bomb it was very firmly rebuffed by the P47s and P40Ns there. Several divisions are en route to the Burmese border to stabilise it, and I'm seriously pondering a major strategic realigment of the Chinese army into the mountainous regions there, where if nothing else the Chinese can secure the Allied thrust. SOPAC Supplying his bases has become very difficult for him, only Manus and a couple of bases on the north coast of PNG are in range of SOPAC that can be supplied. One convoy passing by Manus was hit by attack bombers, which might not be all that against warships but they eat AKs for breakfast - one sunk, one damaged. I've sent in DDs as well but they've not arrived yet, bit of a gamble but you never know. Kiriwana Island, two hexes from Milne Bay, is now an airfield 2 and P47s are ranging all the way up beyond Lae. The Japs know to avoid these babies. The situation is almost, but not quite, ready for the next leap, which will be quite a risky one. Buna, or Gasmata, most likely. I've got a division equivalent well prepped for Gasmata but its very exposed to the Japanese airfield at Manus which I have not yet been able to close down. CENTPAC Been a lot of bombing and raiding, not much invading due to the need to prep. I'm about to invade Jaluit with a couple of brigades, which should be an easy task. BBs have bombarded it repeatedly and the Japs have not been supplied for months. The massive BB bombardment, day after day, is mostly to try and keep the IJN's attention. Would hate for him to crash the party at Buma.

September 7th 1943 BURMA/INDIA The American CVs were spotted finally 2 hexes from Port Blair. Helldiver recon over some Japanese ASW ships means he knows full well what is there. Thunderstorms/monsoons prevented any air operations on the day of their arrival however. Will be landing at Port Blair tomorrow. Soon as it's secure the main Rangoon show is on. Rangoon and Port Blair have both been bombed to about 50% airfield damage. Allied LBA at Akyab ranges over Rangoon and Port Blair without opposition. 14th Army still stalled but hopefully fixing his main forces in place. New toys too, B24Js are arriving in large numbers - there are a lot of old B25Cs and some B25D1s in this theatre which are not appropriate given all the land bombing going on, so SEAC is getting the fresh heavy bomber variants until all the mediums have been upgraded to heavies. CHINA Japanese forces at the gates of Chungking! That said it looks quite defensible and it's going to take him a while to bring proper forces up, I think I 2-4 weeks yet before things get critical - and by then, the next volley of Chinese reinforcements will be in place and I'll be much more ready for a Last Stand. SOPAC Finally got two squadrons of P38s into action over Manus - it was a bloody day for the japaense CAP. Then 50 heavy bombers hit and did more heavy damage, catching quite a few bombers on the ground. Bad weather stopped play for a bit and then when the clouds cleared, I see a convoy headed towards Manus, a couple of hexes out atm. Catalinas managed to find and torpedo an AK in bad weather but the majority of the bombers at Feni Island couldnt find the target. I've ordered in the DD flotilla at Feni Islands to try and intercept, and moved up another attack bomber squadron, moving some P40Ns back to Woodlark Island. The heavy bombers at Munda are in the process of being transferred to Woodlark Island as well, where they can reach all the important eastern PNG bases and even up as far as Manus, which means all ~120 bombers in SOPAC can once again easily hit any target in SOPAC that might be asked of them. Gasmata is definitely the next target, once Manus has been heavily suppressed it will be time. CENTPAC Been trying to extricate marines from Maloelap but its hard, they just will not load. Its a badly damaged port 1, with no naval support, I've been using AKs and APs but even so. It had to be fast too as the atoll was overstacked and so I couldnt bring in any engineers or naval support to help matters. After about 4-5 days of them stuck at Maloelap loading KB arrived, two strikes from about 50 Jills met a half dozen P38 LRCAP - a dozen Jills shot down, five cargo ships and CL Raleigh sunk. I'm pulling them back, with about half of the troops loaded. I need to sneak in some naval support I think, perhaps SST Argonaut can be made useful. Jaluit atoll was invaded by a USMC tank regiment and some combat engineers, the engineers suffered horribly (75% casualties, mostly disablements though thank god), while the tanks mostly rode over the defenders, who were out of supply. The first day of landing was weird, my troops had an AV in single digits due to fatigue and disruption, mystifying. They soon got their act together though and they enjoyed massive air support, the Japanese were evacuating the day they landed via Topsy and submarine in fact, after three days of fighting Jaluit fell to the Allies with heavy Japanese casualties. THOUGHTS Well, KB is still in CENTPAC which bodes well for Rangoon, looks like naval superiority will be mine, and unchallenged at that. So it's safe to assume the troops will get ashore. And safe to assume that the troops will be adequate to the task, I think. Looking good. Wary of a Japanese counteroffensive now he knows where my CVs are, but he's been very cautious with his carriers, preferring hit and fade attacks at maximum range - I doubt he's up for moving right up to an Allied atoll bristling with Dauntlesses and attack bombers. IMHO that is what he should do, though, to stem the tide.

Bad day for the Japanese. American boots hit the ground at Port Blair, one more day and the whole division will be unloaded. Port Blair looks to have about 100 AV in defence - not enough. The Japs lost >160 aircraft today, 80 of them on the ground as Port Blair was nuked. Bad luck for him really, the last three days have been bad weather days in the Bay of Bengal, this is the first day in which aircraft flew - and it was a bit too late, as the Royal Navy shelled Port Blair and essentially knocked it out of action on this critical day. Mayhem ensued when the carriers bombed the tar out of Port Blair's airfield without opposition. Several air raids on the carriers from Tavoy and Moulmein, which have not been suppressed (out of range of Allied LBA), but the range is fairly long and the attacks piecemeal, the Hellcats chewed them up quite badly. He's lost over 220 aircraft in 2 days now and achieved nothing at all. Must be quite gutting for him. Unfortunately most of those were fighters so I imagine he still is capable of delivering a sting if I lack air cover. My CV aircrews are getting tired after 2 days of intense action and being stood to alert for the best part of a week now. Not sure if I should press on while the iron is hot or pull back and stand down for a day or two. I suspect I shall press on, as he is undoubtably suffering far more than I am. More bad news from China though but its only ever bad news from there. The really annoying thing is that every hex lost is one the Chinese will never ever take back, they are simply unable to attack, ever, due to lack of supply. September 20th BURMA/INDIA Well, the div landed at Port Blair self-immolated. You can read all about it here... http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tt.asp?forumid=711 [8\|] After the dust had settled I evacuated what was left of the division to Trincomalee and immediately prepped two more Divs for Port Blair. And then I sailed in on the attack anyway. D-Day at Rangoon was on the 18th. 5 divisions hit Rangoon, which was defended by one division, and tore it apart. 100 infantry squads, 250 vehicles and 100 guns all destroyed (mostly AA guns). Despite having two weeks warning due to the Port Blair arse up he still seems to be surprised, perhaps by the size of the heavy hand that just hit him. Over five Allied divisions are ashore now, plus baseforces, and now I'm ordering the advance. Pegu is top priority as it cuts Burma off from the rest of the world. In the air the Allied airfarce did a good job splattering first Prome and then Moulmein and then the base just east of Prome, as he hopped air units around. He's had two cracks at the Allied fleet, both of them went badly. On the 20th we had the biggest air duel yet, when he swept the now Allied Rangoon with nigh on 200 fighters and then sent in about 50 bombers. The attacks were not properly coordinated and went in to the 150 Hellcat buzzsaw - total losses 126 Japanese for 13 Hellcats. But Oscars/Tonies, what did he expect? It's going to be a hard fight, I think, but he's badly shaken by this. I need to find defensive positions for the Rangoonians to hole up. Fortunately, there is rough terrain all around. SOPAC Took Gasmata off him, easy fight for the marines, not so easy on the merchant navy. Took the worst losses yet in so doing - proof that the suppressive abilities of heavy bombers are actually quite limited when you can rush reinforcements in. I think i lost about 10 merchants, and most militarised AKs and APs too. OTOH Gasmata means I can take Talasea as well, the marines are already marching. Barges supply Gasmata, he cannot interdict them so easily. Much of the sealift capacity here has been ordered to CENTPAC, that said I plan on an assault on Buna soon and transport is being moved aroudn in readiness. CENTPAC Majuro was captured fairly easily. Japanese presence here has gone quiet. I'm assuming KB is hightailing it to the Bay of Bengal, so while the cat is away the mice will play! Sealift is en route to CENTPAC from SOPAC, I plan on assaults on Wotje and fairly soon after that even Roi-Namur!

September 22nd He tried to force a CV battle at Rangoon but apparently his fleet split up - full speed was involved - and a single partial strike made it in. They got Hellcatted horribly. In the email exchange that followed, this was brought up :- "allies are hard code limited to strike range of 7 from carriers. Japanese max carrier strike range is 8. " I didn't actually know that so unbeknownst to me every turn an Allied CV force doesn't move while under Japanese recon they are flirting with death. Silly me, I was merely using the stats of the aircraft concerned rather than the "Screw the Allies" extra rules. I've honestly lost count of the number of ridiculous hardcoded "enhancements" that riddle this game to screw the Allies at every turn. [8\|] You'd think the Japanese won the war or something. [8\|] I wonder what the historical justification for that hardcoded limit is that means if you don't move, every turn, you risk a totally one sided carrier engagement which never actually happened except in the fevered fantasies of the JFB. Annnnyway, I'm hardly surprised, merely resigned. I'll only update briefly Burma, as not enough time has passed for much to develop elsewhere. There are T-bolts at Rangoon now, and they've meted out lots of punishment as he persistently tries to sweep it. I think total IJ air losses during the Rangoon invasion so far are now well into the 200s, probably >250 if the current days shenanigans are included, in exchange for about 20 Hellcats. in addition as the fights are all over Allied capital ships and bases, the pilot losses are even more one sided. Going to need more fighters again though I think as if he wins air superiority over Rangoon and manages to crater the airfield, that will be Very Very Bad. Pegu falls to the Allies with massive casualties, the remnants retreat towards Moulmein. I'm going to have a weak division chase them, as I want to hold Moulmein too. Meanwhile the rest of the Allied land force turns north to try and get into the jungles asap - Pegu is the key here, as it's the link from Burma to the rest of the Japanese Empire. If I can hold that a good 5-10 Japanese divisions will be starving. Allied bombers are in interdiction mode, hitting Japanese ground units at bases across the rest of Burma to try and prevent strategic movement. Some pretty heavy casualties have been caused, 100+ sort of numbers in a single raid against forested bases, so I think he is indeed in strat rather than combat mode. I guess next turn I will attempt to force a CV battle. I wasn't planning on seeking CV battle until 1944 but with him down about 50 Judies and 50 Zeroes, it may well be worth the risk. The Allied convoy is finally all ashore at Rangoon now, the 3 escort carriers will escort the convoy north towards Diamond Harbour asap while the other CVs advance SW towards the enemy.
