mbatch729 -> Soviet Fleet in Action (9/21/2009 3:49:08 AM)

Since it may be a while before most folks see the Russian Fleet in action, thought I'd post this screen shot.

Sheytan -> RE: Soviet Fleet in Action (9/21/2009 6:15:35 AM)

The Stalin is a destroyer??? How could his ego live with that?

Monter_Trismegistos -> RE: Soviet Fleet in Action (9/21/2009 10:13:26 AM)

So, you are opponent of Seydlitz? :)

Well, the G. W. Bush is (soon) a Carrier [;)]

Terminus -> RE: Soviet Fleet in Action (9/21/2009 11:47:16 AM)

George H. W. Bush, thank you very much. He was a decorated naval aviator, you know.

Yes, Mark is my opponent. Nice to see that the battle looked similar from his side.

I would not have wanted to be the captain of the Stalin. If she had performed badly then her officers probably would have been purged.

And if they performed too well, they'd have been purged!

Somehow I don't see George W getting a Carrier named after him [:D]

P.Hausser -> RE: Soviet Fleet in Action (9/21/2009 3:14:22 PM)

I thought CVN-79 would be named after him.

Why not, they named a submarine after Carter... [8|]

You do realize tha Carter was an Annapolis grad and served aboard submarines for six years right? Political opinions of President Carter aside (and I agree with about .001% of what he says btw) he was still served and deserves a ship named after him. He could have had a carrier but he thought a submarine was more appropriate.

Shouldn't every president have a ship named after them, regardless or military service. Being president should be a qualifier enough on its own. The president is the commander and chief after all. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of consistency with the what type of ships are named after presidents.

PS. This thread is the reason why you should never discuss politics on a non-political discussion board...we already have 2 instances of people's political opnions showing through (myself being on of them). So apologies for going off topic and typing without thinking.

Nuclear engineer of some sort no? I remember 3 mile Island. Carter showed up and sat at the console and knew what was going on and how all the controls worked. Can one imagine W doing the same thing? No point on politics intended, but it seems our politicians are now politicians from day 1. Never did much else but go to school and enter politics.

CVN-79 will be the second ship of the Gerald Ford class, and isn't to enter service until 2018. It doesn't have a name yet.

He was apparently undergoing training for that position (if you trust Wikipedia) but cut his training short and resigned his commission when his father died. I suspect he knew more about nuclear power plants than the average layman but that isn't really fair to insult GWB because he didn't get the same training.

Terminus -> RE: Soviet Fleet in Action (9/21/2009 8:44:48 PM)

And also not really relevant. GHWB flew Avengers in the Pacific, JC was a bubblehead, JFK was a PT boat driver... What else have we got?

eMonticello -> RE: Soviet Fleet in Action (9/22/2009 1:35:09 AM)

LBJ almost made it to Lae as an observer in a B-26.

gunnergoz -> RE: Soviet Fleet in Action (9/22/2009 1:41:33 AM)

I'm sorry but I think we went haywire naming ships starting with the Forrestal.  Carriers should have kept names of famous ships or battles, submarines names of fish, etc.  (Ever hear of a fish named the Glenard P. Lipscomb?)  Once we opened the pandoras box of naming ships for political expediency, we may as well have just sold the rights to the corporations.  "Anchors aweigh on the USS Pampers." And for presidents? Well, maybe after they'd been dead for a while or assassinated, but otherwise, its just politics as usual.

crsutton -> RE: Soviet Fleet in Action (9/22/2009 2:36:52 AM)

Crap, I hate the idea of them naming carriers after presidents. Does not matter which one, it just blows. What about Wasp or Hornet? Now that sound like an aircraft carrier!

Exactly.

RCNVR -> RE: Soviet Fleet in Action (9/22/2009 4:16:41 AM)

Maybe just name one the USS President again and you cover them all.

Shouldn't you blame SecNav Josephus Daniels for bowing to political pressure by naming the first carrier after an aircraft inventor who obtained research grants from the War Department? [:)]

I remember that movie, though not the title. Don Knots had the lead role IIRC. [:D]

Frankly, I find it a bit disturbing. Naming one of the most powerful ships in the navy for a past but living president with close relatives deeply active in top-level politics reminds me somewhat of personality cult. I know this is not the case, but still it is close enough to make me uneasy.

Note it isn't a political party issue, I would feel the same with a "USS Clinton" for example.

Yes, so feel free to offer any advice. I've been staying off the forum to avoid the temptation of reading Don's AAR.

I remeber one episode of the Simpson's where Walter Mondale has a laundry ship named after him [:D]
