Political opinions of President Carter aside (and I agree with about .001% of what he says btw) he was still served and deserves a ship named after him. He could have had a carrier but he thought a submarine was more appropriate.

Being president should be a qualifier enough on its own. The president is the commander and chief after all. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of consistency with the what type of ships are named after presidents. PS. This thread is the reason why you should never discuss politics on a non-political discussion board...we already have 2 instances of people's political opnions showing through (myself being on of them). So apologies for going off topic and typing without thinking.

He was apparently undergoing training for that position (if you trust Wikipedia) but cut his training short and resigned his commission when his father died. I suspect he knew more about nuclear power plants than the average layman but that isn't really fair to insult GWB because he didn't get the same training.

Naming one of the most powerful ships in the navy for a past but living president with close relatives deeply active in top-level politics reminds me somewhat of personality cult. I know this is not the case, but still it is close enough to make me uneasy. Note it isn't a political party issue, I would feel the same with a "USS Clinton" for example.
