elpaco -> bombardment retaliation (9/21/2009 12:45:54 PM)

I am intending to bombard a port where a BB is disbanded.
What is going to be his reaction ? is it going to retaliate as in a normal surface combat or be surprised and take the shells without reacting ?
or is there a chance for any kind of reply ?

thx

In WitP, disbanded ships in port do not respond in any way to bombardments ( unless you count taking damage and maybe sinking as responses. ) Unless there are coastal guns or mines present at the port you are trying to bombard, you pretty much have a free hand.

ok thx for the fast reply
I'll give it a go then
don't think there is any mine, probably a few guns though, but nothing more than business as usual ...
and the reward is worth the risk ...[8D]

It really depends if you are playing the AI or not. If you are playing the AI even on hard mode, then you only have to worry about air support/mines/coastal guns. The AI will most likely keep the BB in the port till repairs are completed or sunk. If anything it might try to run away, but highly doubtful. The AI rarely uses Mines so basically that leaves airpower/coastal guns to worry about.

I don't think you can do any damage to that BB in port with a bombardment attack either. There was a similar thread about this on the forum last week or so.

I didn't see the similar thread, but I am not aware of anything in the way the game works that confers on a BB immunity from a naval bombardment. Such bombardments do hit ships in port, so I would have thought that the critical question is one of whether your bombardment force includes guns capable of penetrating the BB's hide. The better your advance reconnaissance, the more effective your bombardment should be, but otherwise it's down to luck whether the BB is one of the ships that get hit.

No historical reason why a bombardment force should not target a BB anchored in port - think Bretagne at Mers el Kebir.

just to let you know the outcome of the operation :
I forgot to mention the game is stock and it is a pbem in which I play the japanese

I bombarded the port of Broome with what I had nearby (ie CA Chokai, Maya and Atago) where I knew the BB HMS Resolution was disbanded after having received 3 torpedoes a few days before (on fire, heavy damage)

the bombardment went fine, with no retaliation at all, the CA managed to score a single hit on the wounded BB but nothing critical (the fire was gone but the damage was still heavy according to the report)

My CA came back a few days later and bombarded again. they scored another hit (no fire, and no more heavy damage ...)

and soon afterwards, my air recons showed the BB was gone, which was confirmed by a couple of raids by Bettys which found nothing at anchor. I did not manage to intercept the big ship so it is probably safe by now...

anyway, thanks for your replies...

Your Bettys should've hit the port and possibly hit the BB.
