TimeTanker -> No A/Craft in Battle Generator (6/15/2002 7:31:45 AM)

When I go into the Battle generator to start a random fight, there is no "Stike A/C" available to choose from. It just insn't there.

I can go into the editor to select A/C but not in the generator.

I have tried all kinds of different combinations thinking that I had just picked a nation that had no A/C available. But, it does not seem to matter as I just can't get A/C.

Welcome. Please hit my thread in the Hall of Fame 'Screen Names' when you get a minute.

Go into preferences, and find the Air Units setting in the right hand columns. These columns contain alot of percentile numbers for balance. You can adjust air units for either side there. Note that in bad weather you still may not get any, same with darkness.

Hi Goblin,

I posted the reason for my name in the screen names thread.

But, I know all about the Preferences part of the game. And, I have checked on time of day and Weather in every case. I still don't get to pick Strike A/C.

I have been playing SP since SP2 and mostly had been ignoring the inablility to pick A/C. But, I am one of those that enjoys the "Combined Forces" part of it. So have finally gotten around to asking why this is.

I have played against Stuart Millis for over 5 years now and am quite familiar with how all of this works. I just haven't had time to play the ladders all that much.

One thing that I have been trying to find is a listing of people that are online at any given time to play "Online Games of SPW@W" Stuart and I have played a few times and I thoroughly enyoy that. And, now that I am on DSL I can actually play without tons of lag.

Thanks for answering my question.

TT,

Thanks for posting on the thread! If the number of Air Elements is set at anything but 'XXX' or '0', and the weather and lighting are good, you should get them! I don't know anything else that could help! Maybe someone else....

Good Luck.

I have noted in a couple of early WWII campaigns I was playing, that the AI selected air even in a defensive assault battle, where I didn't get that option as the attacker. When I stopped playing them the AI had selected air 4 times, whereas I had only one opportunity, in all kinds of battles, including once being attacked by the Polish airforce as GE, and by the Finn air force as the USSR. It was so bad that I was getting to think that the air was only possible during assaults where I was attacking, but then I ended up attacking in a number of assaults without air being possible. I just don't remember what the weather was on those though. Overall, my data was collected over the course of approximately 20-25 battles. I think the air was toned down a great deal, but I do have to wonder why the AI got to have it a minimum of 4X my rate, and particularly that he would get air while I WAS ATTACKING HIM in an assault.

Maybe just bad breaks, but it does appear that there's something to this. For all the times I played USSR and GE campaigns (WWII ones, not the generated ones) before V.7.1, I don't recall ever having been attacked by either Polish or Finnish air, and that must have added up to at least 150 battles.

Anyone who wishes airpower simply has to change the 'XXX' under Preferences to a number other than zero. You can also insure your opponent gets airpower, and how much, this way. Weather still may affect this.

Charles, I know you know this, but the newbies reading this might not.;)

Goblin- A Goblin likes XXX:p

Goblin: Yup. you're covering more bases.

TimeTanker -> (6/15/2002 11:46:35 PM)

Ok,

I just tried again.

Sov's Advance against Germans, June 1945, Noon, No Major Water, Large map, Default on all other settings.

Preferences, XXX on A/C, I gave the Sov's 10% more ability on toughness ratings. 5100 BP's to 2500 Sov's to Germans.

Still no Strike A/C available. I could have some gliders if I wanted.

Derek

TT,

Set your aircraft on 1 or 4 or however many you wish! That should do the trick!

Goblin- A Goblin inputs numbers;)

Hi Goblin,

Thanks for the help. I have a "Strike Element" again. Woo Hoo!!

It seems that after taking my original setting from 3 A/C to XXX and then back to 4 A/C I was able to "Reset" the A/C preference.

Thanks

Also, I think SPWAW decides which side has aerial superiority.... but I'm not sure if this is in the Generator or in the Campaigns....
Kinda hard for strike a/c to be flying around with lotsa fighters buzzing around.....

TimeTanker -> Ummmm..... (6/24/2002 4:54:32 AM)

I doubt that the mere fact that the other side (Historically) had air superiority would eliminate my abilities to buy Strike A/C. Even up to the finish of the war the Luftwaffe was still operational. Effective however,....may be a different thing.

It turned out that it was a function of having to reset the A/C preferences in the Preferences screen (I had the number of A/C chosen set at 4 previously for a game I had played about 3 months ago) So when I went in and reset it to XXX and exited; when I came back in and specified how many A/C I wanted to make available to the players. I found that now I had Strike A/C available.

Not enough of a programmer to understand why it worked that way but it did.

I would not rule out the idea that there may be some limitations built into the game to mimic historical weapons shortages. But, have never heard that if you are playing 1944 Germans that you are going to have a limit imposed on you because of the fact that by then the Luftwaffe was in a world of hurt.

I know that if you have your rarity button on that there may be a problem getting certain types of weapons or A/C. But, it has never eliminated the ability to choose a Stike Element completely.

:)

tracer -> (6/24/2002 12:16:28 PM)

I started a couple threads about this several months ago; here are some of the tips I got from the replies:

--set weather to '1'
--set time-of-day to daylight hours
--if you don't get air sections, before attempting again you must close SPWAW completely
--if you've just played a battle that had air sections, you must exit SPWAW and restart to have them available
--Skukko mentioned something about turning off (I think) rarity, since air superiority during the battle date does affect availability

Thats all I can remember right now
