TOMLABEL -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 5:40:33 AM)

Same EXACT thing happened to me!!!![:@][:@][:@][;)] (pretending I'm not in 'the know').

loricas -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 7:32:52 AM)

check commander

wild_Willie2 -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 7:52:48 AM)

And Pensacola's ammo...

goodboyladdie -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 10:38:39 AM)

I have noticed similar instances since I last patched. Each time I have found an Ensign in command!

Cribtop -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 10:53:53 AM)

I had the same thing happen with an IJN VADM in command.

Were there multiple task forces present at Tarawa? That seems to cause this behavior. I would send the devs a save on this.

SuluSea -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 11:54:18 AM)

The Portland's CO will get some however. [;)]

Knavey -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 12:25:12 PM)

Seems to be a decent commander...good stats from what I can see. Full ammo loadout.

Just ran the turn again with some changes in the way I had the Pensacolas orders setup. Made her homeport Tarawa with a react of 6. Same results.

[image]local://upfiles/7595/34178AC7B54149B7810EAF34BD295356.jpg[/image]

Knavey -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 12:26:54 PM)

It does look like multiple TFs for the IJN since there are different ships on the combat results from the different days.

goodboyladdie -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 12:43:02 PM)

If the leader is good, I do not understand why she avoided battle. A bit worrying, as I can't remember seeing this behaviour before they "fixed" PTs. Perhaps there is some fall-out in the surface combat code?

Knavey -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 2:18:29 PM)

Got the save if anyone wants to play with it.

Yakface -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 3:21:31 PM)

Your problem was that you were asking the Pensacola to engage multiple transports.   I can't get whole TF's of BB's and CA's to engage single transports:

I hope the crew of the Pensacola doesn't start singing "Ol' yellowstain." [:D]

JVSFugitive -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 4:56:19 PM)

Could it be that, given the spotting ranges are very long and at or near the maximum visibility given the conditions, that the lookouts failed to identify the Japanese ships as merchants and assumed they were more potent vessels? I noticed that the spotting range from the first engagement was 30,000 yards (max visibility 30,000 yards). The second engagement was at night with spotting occurring at 10,000 yards (max visibility 12,000 yards). The third engagement at which combat does occur is at 2,000 yards, no mistaking ship types.

Richard III -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 5:40:46 PM)

Send her in with " Bombardment " orders and see what happens ?

John Lansford -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 8:21:23 PM)

I've got Pensacola working with some Aussie and RN ships out of Darwin and in a TF she's doing just fine.  I didn't have her intercept the Tarawa landings but did send Louisville to visit the Makin invasion.  Portland and two DD's also raided the Wake invasion and found herself in a messy fight with about 30 different ships.  Even merchant ships get a hit or two if there's enough of them...

JWE -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 9:05:45 PM)

Don't ya'll dare to be messin with my USS Pensacola. I'm an old Gulf Coast boy and since we couldn't have a USS Tampa, I adopted the Pensacola as the next best thing. I even put a pixel dot of me on the icon.

Ya'll be dissin my baby and I might get upset. I might get upset enuf to turn her into a super Boise with Halsey as the skipper. And speakin of Boise, what the heck? Boise??? Boise is in frikkin Idaho!!! Oh yeah, right!! A ship named for potatoes is gonna do the deed, while Pensacola shows the yellow stain?? Not in my lifetime.

Knavey -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 9:13:57 PM)

That was a yellow flag if I ever saw one in a set of combat reports!

Cribtop -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 9:23:33 PM)

In my case, I had Yamato, Mutsu, 5 CA, 4CL, and at least 6 DD engage four enemy amphib TFs at Lunga. Mikawa was in command (not the best, but not the worst, either). The Allied TFs were escorted by a few DDs and 1 CL that an IJN sub had torpedoed already. The preponderance of metal in the hex dramatically favored the IJN.

I tried setting Lunga as homeport and played around with reaction distances. Routing was Direct and threat tolerance was Absolute. Nothing worked, both TFs sought to disengage in at least 5 re-plays of the turn. I didn't try bombardment, but assumed a bombardment TF encountering hostiles would be more likely to disengage, not less.

I believe this is a bug involving multiple TFs in the hex. I urge you to send in a save.

PS Two days later, when 3 Allied TFs had withdrawn and only one was still unloading, Tanaka engaged them with the 4 Kongo class BBs and assorted cruisers and sank all five enemy vessels. Yes, Tanaka is more aggressive, but I believe the reason he engaged and Mikawa sought to flee has to do with the multiple enemy TFs in the hex at the time.

Dude, I was only joking (hopefully obviously).

I see you are from Tampa, but are ready to put the yellow flag on my beloved Pensacola. Sigh .. I am depressed .. you must have gone to Hillsborough, or Jefferson, or maybe Leto.

Florida does not wave the yellow flag. Small, but staunch and forthright, she follows in the footsteps of Perry, Smith and Flagler.

Lol JWE,

You got it...was a Dragon. Feinder was one also. Seeing as you named those and not some of the more recent schools, you probably were Plant (1st guess since those are big Plant rivals), Chamberlin, Gaither or Robinson and will throw King in there for good measure.

I actually like the Pensacola area, great diving up there. Want to get up there and do the Oriskany but just can never get that worked out.

Bless you, my son, and Feinder too. It was back in the early 60's, and I was such a pissant my parents sent me off to the Bolles School (a private military and penal school) in Jacksonville. But lived in Palma Ciea, on Sunset Drive, off Howard, by the golf course, so I guess I'm a Plant Panther. All my buds went to Plant and so did all my sweeties. Had some friends from Robinson. Damn ... it's been so long since I heard of the Dragons ... Jefferson?? God, these threads are great! Happy days, Knavey!

We were one block north of Kennedy (North A St) between Armenia and MacDill so you were a little farther south than us. What about Jr. High? Wilson was where we both went. Fuzzy on where all the Jr. High schools were though.

Went to Grady Elementary, and Wilson Jr. High (Bulldogs!). Back when, at Wilson, Coach Sherill was athletic director, and Coach Stokes was football coach. That would have been .. shoot .. what, '63, '64? Yeah, I'm just a Palma Ciea puke.

jcjordan -> RE: Pensacola - the cowardly cruiser! (9/23/2009 11:12:25 PM)

Could it also be due to low night exp of the ship? 35 is almost incompetant in game ratings from my experiences.

Little before my time...I would have been there in 82-84 and Steve (Feinder) was a couple of years behind me. Don't recognize those names...Figarotta and Harrison were the coaches at Wilson when I was there. Mitchell was where we went to elementary school.
