China has been remarkably quiet since the end of April...only a single deliberate attack at Kweisui. Even at Pingsiang the bombardments that used to cause thousands of casualties now create mere dozens. I was wondering if Japan was running low on supply or AV or maybe both. I read in a thread somewhere that Japan starts the war with around 11,000 AV in China so I thought that Id do a little counting. In the far south, 38th Division and a mixed brigade have had their combat effectiveness cut in half with repeated attacks at the road junction behind Wuchow but since 38th Division is SAA I wont count it. Chinese shock attacks have decimated 3rd Divison, 6th Division, 35th Division and a half dozen mixed brigades plus assorted SNLF and RGC units in shock attacks...call it some 2800-3000 AV(all of these units are now at 20-50% strength). Some 2000 IJA AV has been trashed in the meatgrinder at Pingsiang. 700 AV in the forest NW of Nanchang has been trashed in attacks towards Changsha. Wuchang holds the aforementioned 3rd and 6th Divisions plus a full strength division. Hankow has a garrison of 1300 AV besieged....these guys are pretty chewed up also from Japanese attacks on hankow. 800 AV from decimated 35th Division and 13th Ind. Mixed Brigade sits SW of Kaifeng(already counted). In and around Kaifeng are some 2000 AV trashed from the long siege of Tsiaotso. Just north of here are some 900 AV west of Taiyun that have been bloodied trying to open a road to Sian. Farther north are some 600 AV out of supply and retreating from Yenan. In the far north Japan has some 700 AV mostly trashed in the battle for Kweisui. That makes over 11,000 AV that had been pretty beat up in China. I know that troops have been transfered from Manchuria that arent accounted for here but I have to think that the Japanese army in China has been mostly resting during the month of May trying to recover from disruption. Initially at Pingsiang I had trouble getting supply into the base. Now we have nearly 60 transport AC flying supply into Pingsiang from Chungking and we have built up nearly 1200 supply there in addition to constructing a level 1 airstrip and level 2 forts. I think that the threat level to Pingsiang has been greatly reduced and Im thinking about pulling the SEAC medium bombers out as they are using up a lot of supply and I think that their need is greater over Burma. Changsha had 20,000 supply before we brought in the bombers and fighters but with the Pingsiang ground battles and the air war supply at Changsha went below 10,000 and stayed there. I will keep the B-17s at Chungking...we have had over 30,000 supply there the entire war even with the supply transport into Pingsiang. With Myitkina drawing supply from India and Allied control of the road from Myitkina to Lashio to Paoshan I have to think that we are getting the Burma Road supply bonus. 5/20-5/21/42 SUBS SS Grampus takes a DC from IJN ASW near Ominato. SS I-29 sinks TK Herborg off Suva. SS I-165 gets forced to the surface by RN ASW south of Java and takes 19 shell hits before sinking. SOPAC Japan captures Tulagi. An IJN CV was spotted east of Tulagi 2 turns ago(4 days). The PBY-5s missed her last turn but now 2 IJN CVs are spotted 7 hexes east of Efate. We have both fighter and divebomber squadrons on Luganville, Efate and Suva. At Noumea there are over 175 fighters and 80 divebombers so if KB comes within 6 hexes they will be toast. Just in case, we evacuate most of the ships in port at Suva and Noumea and all shipping in the area is ordered to flee. There are over 60 B-17s at Luganville that were massing for the upcoming suppression of the airbase at Shortlands...I wont put these guys on naval attack but every one will be on naval search. 5/22-5/23/42 SUBS SS Grampus scores yet again as she pumps 5 shells into AK Senko Maru near Ominato. SS I-29 sinks PC Jackson at Suva. SS Halibut puts a fish in AK Tamagawa Maru off Hachinohe(HI) but takes 2 DCs in return. SS Flying Fish sinks PB Shotoku Maru near Toyohama.....lots of action this turn in Japanese waters. SS KXII takes 3 DCs from a PB off Miri. SS S-38 puts a torpedo in AK Okiyu Maru...this one is full of troops...off Boeton but takes 3 DCs in return from the escorts. BURMA Another deliberate attack at Lashio reduces the forts to level 2 and causes 400 casualties apiece. DEI Japan captures Den Passar off the SE tip of Java. If I was a betting man Id bet that Japan will invade Java right across the strait from Den Passar at (one of my favorite AE placenames)....drum roll please............Banjoewangii or something like that. Its not heavily defended but is only a level 1 port so will take weeks for Japan to unload the 4 divisions required to take out the 1200 AV at Batavia. Why couldnt Japan just invade at Semarang with the level 5 ports like most of the other AARs where I have all my CD guns waiting.... sigh. Things are getting a little uglier for the Dutch/American air force on Java....Japanese sweeps and night airfield attacks account for 12 P-40Es. We are running out of land based fighters on Java just as the main event is about to start.....just like in RL. SOPAC This is where all the action is now. Japan evidently brought all 3 of their fleet carriers....CV Akagi, CV Kaga and CV Junyo. StoneAge must have swapped out for another A6M2 daitai as he flew 89 fighters this turn. Japan is sailing _DEEP_ into the south Pacific looking for targets of opportunity. This turn the carriers sink 2 ACMs...they were on the way to Noumea and almost out of fuel so I let them continue on to oblivion. More importantly the Allies suffer their worst aerial defeat of the war. StoneAge didnt get within 6 hexes of Noumea which would have caused certain death....instead he got within 7 hexes and only my 7 hex range fighters and divebombers flew only to be overwhelmed by a 6o A6M2 CAP....and recon told me there was only 30 fighters in the air combat TF.....my bad. So the Allies lose 16 F2A-3s, 12 SBD-2s, 3 SBD-3s, 12 P-38Es and 3 LB-30s. I had forgot about the LB-30 on Noumea when I put the B-26s on naval attack and they joined in...but where were the B-26s? I am very disappointed in the performance of the P-38Es. Add to that the fact that 6 Buffaloes were shot down escorting a raid over Lashio and altogether the Allies lose some 82 AC this turn vs 19 Japanese including 12 A6M2s and 3 Oscars. At least the F2A-3s and SBD-2s are obsolete airframes. Now I put all the divebombers and fighters at Noumea on 6 hex range and if the B-26s decide to attack they are on their own. Getting back to the P-38Es, they were going to spearhead the reduction of the Jap airbase at Shortlands...now Im not sure that they are up to the task. Looking at the screen shot, Japan is bringing TKs and BBs and cruisers so they plan to stay around for a bit. Its a big risk going that deep into Allied waters. I thought that StoneAge would bomb Noumea so I evacuated the port and sent everyone out to sea...LOL... in retrospect staying in port would have been safer a Japan wants no part of the Allied aerial armada there. So most everyone in SOPAC is out at sea...fortunately the westbound convoys are far away and not in danger but I have nearly 300 combatant and empty convoy ships fleeing to the 360 degrees of the compass away from the IJN CVs.....most of the "at risk" ships to Sydney and Auckland. Just in case, Im moving fighters and bombers from NE OZ and Port Moresby down to Sydney and putting CV Yorktown to sea from the shipyards even though she has not completed repair of her hull damage. As luck would have it, I have the 10th Air Force HQ on an xAP off south Australia that was heading for Port Moresby...they will instead drop off at Sydney to help facilitate unlimited air ops if needed. SS Perch puts a fish in AK Taizin Maru off Toroshima. SS KXII takes 11 DCs from IJN ASW TF at Miri....SS KXII has 90% flotation damage and probably wont make it back to port. Thats 2 subs hammered at Miri in one turn...both were set to "patrol aound a hex" so Id better reduce the reaction range so the subs dont actually enter Miri harbor.....StoneAge must have a "Top Gun" ASW TF there. DEI Another deliberate attack at Palembang results in 500 Japanese casualties vs 700 Dutch. Japan captures Trinkat off the NW tip of Sumatra. BB Sovereign was making her way across the Indian Ocean to complete hull repairs at Capetown but we got a "temporary flotation repairs failing" message today. CHINA Japan launches their first attack in a week here at the road junction behind and between Wuchow and Kukong....Japan suffers 700 casualties vs 200 Chinese. Japanese bom,bardments have been very ineffectual at Pingsiang for the last month after seeing earlier bombardments causing 2000 casualties in a single barrage. I was reading jwilkerson's thread about the effect of Blenheim bombers on his artillery unit....how it was vaporized in 2 turns...and I wonder if the daily aerial bombardments by the Allies are having the same effect. StoneAge used to have 5 artillery units at Pingsiang and now there are only 4...possibly one was destroyed and the others are heavily disrupted? SOPAC Japan captures Nikunau in the Gilberts. "Where is Task Force 34.....the world wonders" Admiral Chester Nimitz 10/25/44 5/26-5/29/42 SUBS WitP AE requires some 16 or 17 squadrons to be withdrawn on 6/1/42. One of those squadrons is No. 4 AACU RAF....a torpedo bomber squadron aboard CVL Hermes. This squadron has 2 pilots and no AC so it cant be withdrawn off the CVL or even flown off to Java. The ABDA fleet heads to port at Tilatjap so Hermes can offload the torpedo bomber pilots in port. On the way to Tilatjap they encounter SS I-32. SS I-32 sinks AO Trinity and AO Tan 1 near Tilatjap. RN ASW returns the favor by sinking SS I-32. SS KV sinks AK Sakito Maru near Saigon. SS Perch sinks PB Nichinan off Kochi. SS KXII sinks off Borneo coast from damage suffered the previous turn at Miri. SS Perch now surfaces off Kochi to pump 7 shells into AK Arabia Maru and takes 1 shell in return. SS KXV sinks PB Fukuei at Miri but takes 2 DCs from the IJN "Top Gun" ASW TF there...looks like the Top Gun TF consists of 2 SCs and 2 Es. SS S-47 sinks CHa-14 off Ominato. SS Tautog puts a fish in AK Hokkai Maru near Lihir. SS Skipjack surfaces off Kendari to put 4 shells in AK Tazima Maru but takes 2 shells in return. DEI Japan captures Siberoet Island off Sumatra, Donggala on Celebes and Tamerfane on Aru Island. The Dutch launch a counterattack at Ambon...a 6:1 and then a 9:1 shock attack cause 320 Japanese casualties vs 200 Dutch but fail to force a retreat. Another deliberate attack at Palembang results in 360 IJA casualties vs 630 Dutch. CHINA Hostilities are renewed in China. Another deliberate attack on the road junction behind and between Kukong and Wuchow results in 670 IJA casualties vs 300 Chinese. A deliberate assault on Hankow causes 4500 Japanese casualties vs 2000 Chinese. Japan repeatedly attacks Chinese troops as they attempt to withdraw to a mountain hex on the road just NE of Tsiaotso and eventually catches a single corps left behind and routs it....Japan suffers 1500 casualties in the 2 day battle vs 4800 Chinese. SOPAC StoneAge has had KB running amok in the south Pacific for a week sinking shipping from Noumea to Auckland as well as terrifying the populace of New Zealand. CINCPAC Admiral Chester Nimitz radios "Where is Task Force 34....the world wonders" as Admiral Halsey with the fast carriers of Task Force 34 are nowhere to be found. Task Force 34....CV Yorktown CV Hornet and CV Saratoga are now just north of Pago Pago hurrying(as much as you can hurry in AE) west to cut off KB deep in the south Pacific. CV Enterprise is pulled from the shipyard in Sydney....still with unrepaired hull damage...and ordered .to head north to Brisbane to first rendezvous with a surface TF and then join up with Task Force 34 near Noumea to engage and crush KB. KB disappeared into the vast wastes of the south Pacific on 5/26-5/27. Heavy bombers and PBYs had been put on search from bases ringing the periphery of the Tasman Sea in an effort to locate KB. When KB finally does reappear west of Noumea on 5/29 they are within 9 hexes of the CV Enterprise TF and 8 hexes of the surface combat TF....fortunately neither side detected the other. Looks like StoneAge is heading back to Truk with KB . Since Task Force 34 is still 3-4 days away from Noumea it looks like KB will make it out of harm's way. Meanwhile CV Enterprise is ordered back south at full speed along with the surface TF to avoid confronting KB single handedly. 5/30-5/31/42 SUBS SS RO-33 takes 5 DCs and is heavily damaged from USN ASW TF near Brisbane. SS Tuna surfaces off Choiseul Bay to exchange shell fire with AKL Tateyama Maru. SS Greenling surfaces near Munda to put 4 more shells in AKL Tateyama Maru. SS Drum finally sinks AKL Tateyama Maru with a torpedo off Rekata Bay. DEI Japan captures Car Nicobar off the NW tip of Sumatra. Two more Dutch shock attacks at Ambon at 15:1 odds and then 47:1 odds cause 400 Japanese casualties vs 72 Dutch....still no retreat here by IJA troops so it looks like we will have to kill them in place. CVL Hermes was not able to disband in Tilatjap so she still has the No. 4 AACU RAF torpedo bomber unit aboard. That unit was supposed to be withdrawn today. Im sending all the ABDA fleets to Batavia tomorrow so hopefully CVL Hermes can offload the air unit there. SOPAC The IJN carrier and surface TFs continue to withdraw to the north toward Rabaul and Truk. Allied surface and transport TFs spread around the south Pacific start to head back to ports. We didnt lose too many ships in the raid but I bet we burned up an extra 100,000 fuel points during the Japanese excursion. CV Enterprise makes it back to the shipyard at Sydney to complete repairs. CV Wasp, BB North Carolina and escorts leave Balboa to begin their trip west to Noumea. They should make it in time for the start of the first Allied offensive....Operation Watchtower. AKs are in ports in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland for their 6/1/42 conversion to AKAs. 6/1/42 THE NAVAL WAR With FoW on, StoneAge and I are posting our losses, top pilots and training pools every 2 months. Naval losses are: ALLIED: 2 BBs, 1 CA, 1 CL, 4 DDs, 28 AKLs, 14 AKs, 3 AOs, 6 TKs, 4 SS, 13 AMcs, 4 CMs, 1 CMc, 2 ACMs, 3 DMSs, 2 AM, 1 PC,11 HDMLs, 12 MLs, 8 MTBs and 9 PTs. JAPAN: 4 CVs, 1 BB, 4 CLs, 4 DDs, 31 AKs, 15 AKLs, 6 TKs, 2 APDs, 1 TB, 16 SS, 2 SSX, 2 AMC, 7 DMS, 2 AMc, 1 ACM, 1 CMc, 28 PB and 2 SC The statistic that jumps out at me the most (other than the CVs of course) is the loss of 28 PBs for Japan....it is getting increasingly more difficult for Japan to escort all their transport TFs with the loss of so many escorts. The other thing is that the ship losses for both sides reflect the nature of the conflict...mostly losses due to aerial combat and submarine warfare...very little in the way of surface combat. THE AIR WAR Aircraft losses seem to be ramping for both sides as the attrition battles continue in the skiies over Burma, China and the DEI. Losses now stand at 1894 Allied AC vs 1658 Japanese AC. The Allies had reduced the loss differential to less than 100 AC at one time but the heavy losses of Dutch AC over the last month have increased the differential now to 240 AC. In A2A combat its 1100 Allied AC to 818 Japanese AC. I have a screenshot below of the Japanese AC models ranked in order of heaviest losses. The loss of P-40Es has gone through the roof since the last update 2 months ago....especially in A2A combat....its the green Dutch pilots in the sky over Palembang and Java as pilot quality coudnt keep up with the replacement rate. The Dutch and American fighter groups in Java are now severely depleted as they have exhausted their replacements. The Dutch B-25 bomber squadrons seem to be doing just fine however. 6/1/42 THE AIR WAR And finally here is a screenshot of the pilot pools. This is one aspect of the game that I dont fully understand. There are literally thousands of US Army, Marine and Navy pilots in the pools but their experience is terrible....the Army pilots in particular have only a 29 experience. 6/1-6/2/42 SUBS SS Greenling sinks AK Dakar Maru near Tulagi. SS I-121 takes 10 DCs from RN ASW TF near Merak. SS Drum spots IJN aircombat TF at Rossel Island....positive ID of CV Junyo, BB Fuso and BB Nagato. SS I-158 sinks AO Tan 6 and AO Pecos off Christmas Island(IO)....now the ABDA fleet has lost the 2 big replenishment AOs and is down to 3 of the small AO Tans...not enough to refuel the fleet. We will try to sail into Soerabaja for the next refuel but the time is fast approaching where most of the ABDA fleet will need to withdraw due to the demise of the logistical chain. DEI Dutch trrops at Ambon launch a 49:1 shock attack...1291 IJA troops are killed or captured....the Japanese invasion force at Ambon has been annihilated. We were finally able to disband CVL Hermes in port in Batavia and transfer off the No. 4 AACU RAF torpedo bomber unit....and then finally withdraw it. SOPAC With the sighting by SS Drum of CV Junyo at Rossel Island it appears that KB is continuing to withdraw up the Solomon Island chain. A half dozen AKs at Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland begin their conversion to AKAs....as soon as this is completed the Allies can begin an offensive against enemy occupied islands in the Solomons. Here is a screenshot of Allied bases in the mid south Pacific...not only do they provide mutually supporting airfields and front line bases for PBY naval search but they are critically important for covering the Allied convoy routes. If you are even with points in June 1942, you are doing really well. BTW, even though mines are rarity in AE, don't forget to drop those you are into forward bases and bases you thing may be under enemy threat.

Saudaukar....Thanks for the comments. Yes I learned about mines the hard way.....I was attempting to offensive mine Japanese ports in early Dec. 1941 and 2 of my subs struck mines in one turn. Following that, StoneAge started planting IJN subs in several of my ports and USN ASW is so ineffective in the early war that I couldnt do anything about it. Then I started to defensive mine all of my ports and IJN subs starting dying in droves...7 IJN subs have been sunk by mines so far and now its very rare that an IJN sub even peeks in one of my ports. 6/3-6/6/42 SUBS GONE WILD SS Grunion pumps 58 shells into AKL Bichu Maru and sinks her off Lihir. SS KXIV sinks PB Ayaha maru near Samah. SS I-168 takes a DC from USN ASW TF by Espirutu Santo. SS I-168 then sails south to Efate to sink AKL Montanes. SS 019 sinks AKL Hachirogata Maru off Singkawang. SS Truant sinks AK Ryoyo Maru at Cam Ranh Bay. SS I-154 takes 2 DCs from RN escorts near Malang. SS I-162 puts 4 fish in CA Exeter in 2 separate attacks off Malang sinking her with heavy loss of life. SS I-162 puts a torpedo in CV Formidable off Malang. My ABDA fleets have over 30 floatplanes on ASW and 26 DDs in the hex...4 of which are high experience RN DDs in a dedicated ASW TF with an aggressive commander. Yet in 3 separate attacks in one day by SS I-162 not one ASW device is fired in return. Obviously SS I-162 must be a very experienced sub with a Top Gun skipper. I have no defense for it other than eventually the sub will run out of torpedoes. DEI Two more deliberate attacks at Palembang cause 1000 Japanese and 1300 Dutch casualties. A night port attack at Batavia by Betties plants a bomb on SS KXIII. I have no defense for night attacks so all my damaged subs will need to be withdrawn from Java to repair at backwater shipyards. Just got 3 messages in the last 2 turns that BB Royal Sovereign had "temporary flotation repairs failing" as she makes her way across the Indian Ocean to Cape Town. I had repaired her down to 44% major floation damage at Batavia but now she has 60% damage and is in the no man's land of off map movement....she has another 23 days to reach Cape Town so we will see if she makes it. In the last 2 months the ABDA fleets patroling in the Indian Ocean off the south shore of Java have had BB Royal Sovereign(currently sinking), BC Repulse(currently repairing damage at Colombo), CL Danae(in transit to repair yard at Colombo), 2 large AOs(sunk), 3 small AOs(sunk) and now CV Formidable torpedoed by IJN subs. CV Formidable has 37% floatation damage and will have to be withdrawn to Colombo for repairs. That leaves only 2 CVs and a CVL in the Indian Ocean. With the IJN sub menace I may withdraw the RN carriers just as I had to withdraw the USN CVs from the south Pacific in 4/42. My 2 undamaged CVs are currently outnumbered bi mini KB and my AO replenishment capacity has been reduced by 75% so its getting continually more difficult to conduct fleet ops here. BURMA Three more deliberate attacks at Lashio result in 1400 IJA and 1250 Allied casualties. Allied AV here is now reduced to 50. Some days my bombers get through to disrupt the Japanese attack and cause 1:2 or even 1:3 odds while other days bad weather grounds my sweeps and escorts and my bombers get bounced by IJA fighters and we end up with 1:1 assaults. Burma and India have been relatively "forgotten" theatres for me with all the action that was going on in China, DEI and SOPAC. Now that things have quieted down a bit across the PTO as the Japanese are exhausted in China and the USN is busy doing ship repairs and upgrades I have more time to critcally evaluate the situation here. Ive pulled all the non restricted units out of Ceylon and now most of my non restricted India troops are massing at Calcutta. Lashio will be lost in the next couple of weeks but Myitkina has just been reinforced and now has 800 AV vs an IJA seige force of 270 AV. We are just lobbing artillery shells at each other at Myitkina....I have a single artillery regiment there but 4 more artillery regiments are marching through the jungle from India. When I have 5 artillery regiments at Myitkina we will see how StoneAge likes massed artillery fire. I intend on not only holding Myitkina now but using it for a spring pad for a Burma offensive in fall 1942...probably after the monsoons subside(if I ever start getting British bomber replacements and can start building up my air groups). Since Lashio will probably fall soon I envision an offensine into Burma to reopen the Burma Road. This will be a 2 prong thrust...one prong will be led by the powerful 1st Australian Corps(6th and 7th Australian Divisions) and the other will be led by rebuilt III Corps....virtually every III Corps LCU in Malaya at the start of the war was successully withdrawn and it now has some 600-700 AV with the Indian brigades growing in strength daily. I withdrew the 2 Air HQ from Malaya and put one each at Dacca(level 7 airfield) and Calcutta(level 8 airfield). This puts both airfields at the magic "10" level where that can fly unlimited # of airgroups, AC and flight ops. Chittagong is now at a level 6 airfield and will be given an air HQ to reach the magic 10 level and Imphal will be built up into a level 6 airfield..these 2 airfields will provide the main support for the fall 1942 offensive. 6/7-6/8/42 SUBS GONE WILD SS I-154 takes 6 DCs from RN ASW off Madioen. SS I-29 sinks ACM Chimo near Suva. SS Trout sinks AO Toho Maru by Emirau. SS I-162 puts 2 more torpedoes in CV Formidable. Now SS I-162 has conducted 2 attacks against CA Exeter and 2 attacks against CV Formidable...thats 4 attacks over 2 days and not once does Allied ASW AC(30 plus float planes on ASW) detect or does Allied ASW ships(26 DDs in the hex of which 4 experienced RN DDs are in a dedicated ASW TF with aggressive commander) launch an ASW device against the sub. Now CV Formidable has 95% flotation damage...she will try to make it to port in Batavia. I really think the IJN subs here are too "hot" for Allied ASW to handle so I will continue to move the ABDA fleet away from the southern coast of Java. DEI StoneAge parks CVL Shoho at Singapore. Dutch B-25s from Batavia launch 3 attacks on Shoho....a total of 20 B-25s fly and 7 are shot down with no bomb hits scored. Another inconclusive deliberate attack is launched at Palembang. Japan invades at Bandjermasin. StoneAge continues to whittle away at Allied fighter strength on Java by taking advantage of CAP drift. NORTHERN AUSTRALIA Things seem pretty secure here for the Allies in northern Oz. Airfields have been built or expanded at Darwin, Fenton and Katherine. There is some 850 AV at Darwin and with Timor still in Allied hands the chances of an amphibious assault here are slim. You have really nice defensive setup in Burma. Considering that Allies get quite nice amount of units after summer 42, it is going to be difficult for Japanese to crack. One thing to note (since I always play with hexside information on) is that Akyab can be deathtrap if outflanked. This is because SE hexside is impassable and base has only 2 exit hexes. Well, it works both ways and if IJ (Imperial Japanese [8D]) takes it, it's even easier to trap units there for Allies. Anyway, if IJ wants to go to India, it'll be really painful for him supply-wise to march overland after latest patch. Supply in Burma does not really flow that well through jungle. Allies can do it easily in late 1943, since they have bothlots of supply to burn and lots of transport planes to airdrop supplies to units. I like the idea of sending 18th Div to Koepang. Myself, I usually send that unit to India-Burma to prop up defenses and later to lead counterattack (and try to evacuate 2 AUS brigades from Singapore to Oz). But since you have it in Darwin, dominating east part of DEI from Koepang is good idea. It'd enable possible later war thrust north from Timor (Kendari and Manado) in allied hands would cut the sea route south of PI. It'd also secure Darwin's supply lines..and you could probably ship supplies there from Perth and Darwin. I think it's big mistake for IJ player not to capture Timor early. If it is in IJ hands, even modest number of IJN/IJA planes there would make Darwin quite obscure, since it needs shipped supplies to be effective offensive base. But firmly in Allied hands, it'd make almost impossible to ship resources from Kendari to Japan and would be quite formidable offensive base to stage attacks against DEI.

Saudarkar....good points on both Akyab and Timor. Akyab is very exposed and easy to cut off so Im not making much of an effort to defend it and I certainly wont develop it. If Japan makes a concerted effort to capture Akyab thats fine with me.....that would just mean more cut off IJA troops in the jungle when I launch my Burma offensive in Fall 1942 down the Irrawaddy River Valley. I agree that Japan needs to make an early push on Timor both to isolate the rest of the DEI from Australia and also put naval bombers in range of Darwin. Fortunately I was able to extract nearly 100,000 supply and fuel from the DEI to Darwin at the start of the war so I havent had to run any convoys up there from the south. Im not too worried about Timor right now....StoneAge has bigger fish to fry.....like invading Java. 6/9-6/12/42 ASW GONE WILD ASW seems to have gotten the upper hand the last few days: SS KXV takes 3 DCs from a PB at Makassar. SS KXIV receives 4 DCs from an IJN surface TF off singkawang. SS I-6 takes 6 DCs from an USN ASW TF off Noumea...this is the first naval action by the new USN DEs...DE Ward in fact(hero at Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41 in RL). Im glad that I have quite a few DEs coming on line now after the 5/42 upgrades...I will need every one of these unique ships to deal with the IJN sub menace. SS I-4 takes 3 DCs from a Canadian ASW TF made up of KVs near Efate...take a hike ya hosers. SS I-158 puts 3 more torpedoes in CV Formidable and she sinks with the loss of all her air group....at least as a small measure of revenge CV Formidable"s escort drops 11 DCs on SS I-158 and she is reported as sunk. DEI The loss of CV Formidable is catastrophic loss for the RN...now they are down to 2 CVs and CV Indomitable needs to be withdrawn from an Indian port within a month....after patrolling in the Indian Ocean off the southern coast of Java for over 2 months its time to withdraw the RN fleet. With the loss of a CV and virtual elimination of Allied fighters on Java ABDA is no longer able to provide air cover for their fleets. ABDA is dissolved. RN ships head back to Ceylon for long needed repairs and upgrades. US Asiatic Fleet ships head for Sydney for refits and then will join up with the USN Pacific Fleet. Dutch ships head to Darwin...from here they will defend Ambon and Timor. The defenders of Java are on their own. 2 deliberate attacks at Palembang cause another 1000 Dutch casualties...the end is near. Japan captures Bandjermasin. CHINA After a few weeks of quiet Japan pumps up the volume again again in China. I mistakenly thought that the battle of Pingsiang had ended in a pyrric Chinese victory....we had 1800 AV and 3 level forts with another 1400 AV in reserves in adjacent hexes so I withdrew all the medium bombers, grounded the B-17s at Chungking for much needed repairs and maintenance and put a couple of the LCUs at Pingsiang on reserve status. Big mistake....Japan launches a sudden deliberate attack at Pingsiang and even though we had 1800 AV to 1400 IJA AV Japan got a 2:1 attack and we just barely hung on with a level 1 fort left. Japan suffers 4100 casualties to 1300 Chinese. The next turn Japan launches another deliberate attack at Pingsiang...this time its only a 1:4 assault and Japan takes another 2500 casualties vs 650 Chinese....quite a difference in die rolls between the 2 attacks Id say. Japan launches another assault at the road junction behind and between Kukong and Wuchow....Japan suffers 660 casualties vs 230 Chinese....this is a critical defensive position in 3x terrain...if the Chinese lose this position Japan has an open road to Liuchow and Kweilin. The Chinese army is getting bigger AND badder. We have used up every Chinese replacement so far and the thousands of disrupted squads in the numerous Chinese corps at the start are slowly undisrupting. There are at least a half dozen corps now with 400+ undisrupted squads. In additon, StoneAge has kindly trained up all the Chinese troops with his constant ground assaults and bombardments....virtually the entire Chinese army has experience ratings from the mid 50s to the high 60s. The situation right now in China is similar to the Russian front around Stalingrad in late 1942...Ive let the Japanese exhaust their troops in frontal attacks on my defensive line....meanwhile I have an experienced growing reserve available for a counteroffensive when the IJA troops reach their limit. If I do launch a counteroffensive here it will be in the south where Japan has no railroads and China has the advantage in mobility. 6/13-6/14/42 SUBS SS I-5 takes 2 DCs from USN minesweeper TF near Suva. SS Gudgeon surfaces off Tulagi to pump 15 shells into AKL Heiwa Maru. DEI Japan captures Palembang. 9500 demoralized Dutch troops surrender. Japan invades Enggano Island off Sumatra and captures Aru Island north of Darwin. BURMA Two more deliberate attacks at Lashio cause 700 IJA casualties vs 1000 Allied. SOPAC All hell is gonna bust loose here in about 3 weeks. CV Yorktown, CV Hornet and CV Saratoga are all refueled at Noumea and ready to begin ops in the Solomons. CV Enterprise completed repairs in Sydney and left port today for Noumea. CV Wasp is still 5 days out from Noumea. CV Lexington will complete repairs of her hull damage tomorrow at Pearl Harbor and then will begin her 5/42 upgrades. Im going to plan on a core of 5 CVs for offensive ops in the Solomons over the next few months. CV Lexington will arrive in the Solomons in August and at that time I will start rotating 1 carrier out at a time for maintenance and their 7/42 upgrades. Plus I should plan on the CVs taking damage from IJN subs during the upcoming campaign...there just is no good way to stop them. ASW seems to be working well however in our home waters around New Caledonia/New Hebrides/Fijis where we can blanket the area with level bombers and divebombers flying ASW. The screenshot below shows a very large convoy with 56,000 troops, 92,000 supply and 324,000 fuel 1 day out from Noumea. When the convoy fully unloads we will have nearly 600,000 supply and 600,000 fuel for the upcoming SOPAC offensive. The screenshot also shows the western terminus of our dedicated convoy route from the US west coast to Noumea....the portion from Fiji to Noumea is constantly patrolled by ASW hunter/killer TFs and the convoy itself has an attached ASW TF. There are at least a half dozen ASW hunter/killer TFs patrolling around New Caledonia/New Hebrides and many of them react to subs every turn. Japan has lost 3-4 subs in this area over the last 2 weeks. The Solomons campaign is just waiting now for the AKs to complete their upgrades. I was wrong about the 6/42 upgrade...they dont upgrade into AKAs until 3/43. The Guadalcanal scenario however includes several AKAs as of 8/42....makes me think that the upgrades in the campaign game are in error and I think I will post about it in the naval thread. Port Moresby is now at 87% completion of a level 7 airfield. 10th Air Force HQ is activated today at Port Moresby and we can now conduct unlimited flight ops with an unlimited # of air groups. Luganville is almost a level 8 airfield and the 5th Fighter HQ is on the way to turn it into another unrestricted level 10 airbase. Xxzard.....I construct 80-100 ship convoys to ensure better ASW capability. Unloading is a very time consuming process. Most of my large convoys go to Noumea where I have the Cebu engineer unit(extracted from Cebu during the 1st week of the war) with 100 naval support and also a USN service detachment with 30 naval support so thats 130 naval support in addition to a level 7 port....they can rapidly unload almost any convoy and have been instrumental in helping to build up Noumea to its current state....in fact when I invade Guadalcanal next month the Cebu unit will be in the initial lift to help all incoming troops/engineers/materiel to get ashore. Every turn I have to check ALL my bases where convoys are unloading and I form new convoys with the ships that have the largest loads of fuel to dock to facilitate unloading...troops and supplies seem to unload just fine when they are not tied up pierside. It takes a lot of time to to manually adjust all my convoys that are docked at various ports for unloading every turn but thats just the way the game is. 6/15-6/20/42 SUBS SS Snapper takes 3 DCs from IJN ASW TF near Ningpo. SS Stingray puts 2 shells in AK Oigawa Maru off Pakhoi. SS KXVIII sinks AKL Kikuryu Maru near Bintan. DEI Japan captures Enggano Island off Sumatra. IJA troops storm ashore at Sampit on Borneo. A6M2s from CV Akagi, CV Kaga and CV Junyo are spotted over Borneo so it looks like StoneAge has moved all his carriers to the DEI to facilitate the invasion of Java. CHINA Japan launches 3 more deliberate attacks at the road junction behind and between Kukong and Wuchow.....both sides suffer around 800 casualties. In addition an IJA LCU invests Wuchow...I messed up and only have 270 AV at Wuchow behind level 4 forts....I have some 80 bombers targeting the IJA LCU at Wuchow until I can bring some reinforcements. BURMA Japan captures Lashio after a multi-month seige.....Japan has 4 regiments at Lashio.....basically the 55th Division and 1 regiment from the Imperial Guards.....these guys finally took Lashio after a long seige but are down to about 50% of their normal AV. StoneAge continues the advance to the east of Lashio and takes the road junction.....so if the Burma road wasnt cut before its definitely cut now. At Myitkina there are 2 IJA regiments from the Imperial Guards....some 270 AV in all. The Allies have over 850 AV here. We have been lobbing artillery shells at each other for the last couple months but not much has changed here. The Allies have another infantry regiment and 4 artillery regiments on the way. I was originallly thinking of launching a major offensive in Burma in 3 months when the Allies are stronger....but then the Japanese will be stronger too. Im considering launching an immediate offensive to take advantage of the situation in Burma before Japan can reinforce. Meanwhile, nearly 80 bombers are tasked with targeting the IJA troops at Myitkina. SOPAC SOPAC HQ is activated at Noumea. Japan has two main bases in the south Pacific...a level 4 airfield at Shortlands with some 30 AC and a level 4 airfield at Rabaul with some 75 AC. !0th Air Force at Port Moresby and 5th Air Force at Luganville will commence operations tomorrow to close both Japanese airfields....some 175 plus heavy bombers and 60 medium bombers will be involved. This almost feels like stock WitP with the numbers involved and I intend to see if its still possible to nuke airfields in AE. The Allies intend to shut down both airfields and destroy the Japanese land based air force in the south Pacific by July 1st, 1942. Then SOPAC will launch the 1st phase of their Solomons Campaign during the 1st week of July with Operation Watchtower...the invasion of Guadalcanal. Guadalcanal will be built up into a level 7 airbase to assist with neutralization of Rabaul. SWPAC SWPAC HQ is activated at Brisbane. SWPAC is tasked with advancing along the northern coast of Papua New Guinea to first link up with SOPAC in the Bismarcks and then eventually liberate all of Dutch New Guinea to provide a launch pad for General MacArthur to return to the Philippines. SWPAC will launch the 1st Phase of their New Guinea campaign during the 2nd week of July with Operation Cartwheel.....the occupation of Lae and Gili Gili. The 49th Aussie Battalion and the Lark Battalion are currently marching over the Owen Stanley mountains on the Kokoda Trail to occupy Lae. 6/21-6/22/42 SUBS SS Stingray takes 2 DCs from IJN ASW off Hong Kong. SS Greenling sinks AK Maebasi Maru near Lihir. SS I-16 is hit by 6 DCs and sunk off Efate by USN ASW. SS KXVIII had been under repair in shipyard at Soerabaja and was sunk by a group of Bettys on port attack. SOPAC The 1st large scale aerial attacks of the war against Rabaul and Shortlands produce less than spectacular results. 10th Air Force had great raid coodination against Rabaul....71 B-17s escorted by 25 P-38Es hit Rabaul 2 days in a row in clear weather and score 109 runway hits....Rabaul now has 30% damage. 10th and 5th Air Force attacks at Shortlands go in fragmented to score 83 runway hits and now Shortlands is 50% neutralized. Looks like its much tougher for 4Es to nuke airfields in AE. Over 100 Japanese AC on the 2 airfields are bombed for 2 consecutive days by over 200 Allied bombers and only 12 AC are destroyed on the ground. This was more than offset by the A2A losses....13 P-38Es are lost in A2A vs 4 A6M2s...a 3:1 ratio. The P-38s have now been hammered by A6M2s in 2 large actions over the last 2 weeks. Looks to me like the P-38Es are hardly a war winner. I had 1 squadron of Kittyhawks dogfight these same A6M2s a week ago and they shot down 4 Zeros at no loss to themselves. One Luganville based squadron of B-17s targeted the port and Tulagi and placed a 500 lb bomb on AV Sagra Maru. 10th Air Force and 5th Air Force are tasked with hitting Rabaul and Shortlands again next turn. All the AKs in the south Pacific have completed upgrades and repairs and transport TFs now approach Noumea from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland. CHINA Another deliberate attack Pingsiang results in 2800 Japanese casualties vs 1540 Chinese....keep it coming till the IJA completely exhausts itself. We just upgraded to the newest version of AE a couple of turns ago. Chungking had been at 35,000 supply all game but immediately dropped to 20,000 supply after the upgrade. Supply levels seemed to drop in cities all across China but the Chinese LCUs seem to be taking in more supplies themselves. BURMA StoneAge pushed his troops farther east after capturing Lashio to cut the Burma Road. Japanese troops suffered mightily in the seige of Lashio and there is about 350-400 AV left in the area. These exhausted troops are in no position to support the 270 IJA AV at Myitkina. The RAF will start bombing the 2 regiments of the Imperial Guards at Myitkina around the clock. As soon as the Allied artillery and infantry reinforcements reach Myitkina in a few days a counterattack will be launched. 6/23-6/24/42 SUBS SS I-17 sinks AKL Regulus near Midway. SS Searaven sinks AKL Tensyo Maru off Kwangohowan. SS I-1 sinks AKL Hirondelle by Midway. Ive been sending single AKLs from SF to resupply Wake and refuel and resupply Midway without escorts since they are so far off my normal convoy routes. Looks like StoneAge has figured it out so I will need to send larger escorted convoys now that there are multiple subs in the area. THE AIR WAR Air to air combat has been going horribly for the Allies since we upgraded to the 2nd patch. Two turns ago A6M2s had 3:1 kill ratios on my P-38s and now this turn the Allies lose 10 P-40Es and 8 P-39Ds over Java while Japan loses only 4 A6M2s...thats better than a 4:1 kill ratio. I had unfortunately filled out all my aircraft squadrons in Java before the patch and the replacements were of low quality. Obviously StoneAge is handpicking veteran pilots into his front line squadrons since we did the upgrade. I finally spent some time this turn to go through the pilot selection routines....my front line fighter squadrons likely to see combat at Port Moresby and over Java had to be redone. I put the low experience/low air rated pilots back in group reserve and then general reserve while at the same time hand picked some "Top Gun" pilots to take their place. It will take a few days for most of the pilots to reach their new squadrons and then we will see if it makes a difference. The very poor performance of the Dutch and American replacement pilots validates the decision to withdraw the RN and USN ships from the ABDA fleet in the DEI.....that and the fact that our fighter groups in Java overall are at 20-30% strength. BTW...some other AARs threads have stated that there is no more CAP "drift" with the 2nd patch but I am still seeing it and StoneAge is definitely taking advantage of it. Farther south Tenth Air Force and Fifth Air Force, at Port Moresby and Luganville respectively, have continued to suppress Japanese airfields at Rabaul and Shortlands. Tenth Air Force had another nice cohesive strike at Rabaul....70 B-17s, 10 B-26s and P-38E escort.....this time the A6M2s didnt fly and we delivered another 123 runway hits over 2 days. Rabaul is now 76% neutralized. The strikes went in piecemeal again at Shortlands....no IJA CAP and 47 B-17s and LB-30s along with 15 medium bombers score another 166 runway hits over 2 days at Shortlands. Recon show 50% damage at Shortlands...same as last turn...so FoW is definitely involved here. Intel shows that we only destroyed 9 AC on the ground over 2 days at the two airfields....I have to think that FoW is hiding a much larger # of destroyed Japanese AC. If not, then the 4Es have been pretty well neutered. The weather in the south Pacific continues to be favorable so we will continue the bomber offensive again next turn. DEI Japan captures Sampit on Borneo. Still no evidence of accumulation of transports in the DEI for the big show at Java. CHINA China is fairly quiet this turn save for the usual bombardments at Pingsiang, Hankow and Kweisui. Ive attached a map of northern China showing IJA forces skirting the Mongolian border in the far north in an effort to outflank us. Most of the action in the north centers around Kweisui where Japan launches an assault every other turn. SIGINT is repeatedly indicating that the 12th Army and at least 3 divisions are planning for Tsiaotso....we are pretty well dug in here. CHINA After round the clock bombing of IJA troops at Pingsiang for months I finally rested all the B-17s and medium bombers in China. StoneAge takes advantage of the lull in bombing and launches a deliberate attack....this time its a 1:1 and the forts at Pingsiang are reduced to zero. Japan suffers 2050 casualties vs 1850 Chinese. The next day the Japanese attack at Pingsiang comes in at 1:2....Japan has 660 casualties vs 1130 Chinese....its time to get the bombers flying at Pingsiang again. Since installing the 2nd patch, supply that had been consistently over 35,000 at Chungking has been halved while half the cities in China are now almost completely out of supply. I know that there has been a lot of uptake of supplies from the bases into the individual units but the lack of supply in bases around the country is pretty scary. Hopefully this stabilizes soon. SOPAC USN AKs will reach port at Noumea next turn and assault loading will commence on June 29th. The bombing of Rabaul and Shortlands continues....Rabaul has 1 day of inclement weather so only suffers 66 hits and is now 76% neutralized. Shortlands suffers 114 hits and is now 62% suppressed. SWPAC The Australian 49th and Lark battalions occupy Buna. The 2nd patch upgrade seems to be causing all the supply in Australia to be sucked into Sydney....there is almost 990,000 supply there now so every xAK in port begins to load supplies to prevent wastage. BURMA Three artillery Allied regiments arrive in Myitkina after dragging their guns through the jungle from India. We now have a total of 4 artillery regiments at Myiykina and will launch the first major Allied ground bombardment of the war. Meanwhile, StoneAge sends 3 regiments deep into the jungle to pursue our retreated units from Lashio. Immediately after installing the 2nd patch supply at Myitkina went from 70,000 to 50,000. This turn supply in Myitkina has just recovered to 70,000. DEI Looks like the main event is about to begin at Java. A large IJN surface TF bombards Kragen in what looks like a preparation for amphiboius landings. AC from CV Akagi, Kaga and Junyo ate ID'ed as they sweep Allied airfields on Java. Looks like pretty much all the IJN CVLs and CVEs are off Java also. A replenishment TF is ID'ed but curiously no amphibious assault TFs are spotted. The Allies lose another 10 P-40Es and 5 P-39s to 3 A6M2s during their fighter sweeps....now its a 5:1 ratio. KB caught me with some damaged subs in the shipyard at Soerabaja...I placed the subs on readiness with a 3 day delay so I have to continue flying CAP until the subs can get underway. If I have any fighters left after that then it will probably be time to withdraw the remnants. Some 50 plus level bombers are placed on naval attack...these bombers have been bombing airfields, ground troops and have been training for low naval for over 6 months and still they cant hit the broad side of a barn. Allied AC losses are about to go through the roof. The Japanese action at Kragen seems half hearted for some reason...Im not convinced this is the real deal...it may be a diversion. Kragen is only a level one port and it would take forever to unload the 4 divisions necessary to conquer Java. Im keeping all the Dutch CD units loaded on rail cars until we know for sure where the landings will take place. BURMA The Allies unleash their 1st big artillery barrage at Myitkina.....4 artillery regiments inflict 276 casualties.....not like the big IJA bombardments in China but its a start. Allied bombers in India fly around the clock to pound the 2 IJA regiments at Myitkina. Burma Army, now with an AV of over 900 at Myitkina, intends to fix the 2 Imperial Guards regiments at Myitkina and destroy them in situ. Meanwhile, the rail net in NE India and Assam is swarming with activity as Ist Australian Corps and III Corps are rushed to the front. CHINA StoneAge has just stepped up the tempo here. He has been deliberate attacking at Kweisui and hitting it with 4-5 bombing missions per turn so something is up. Theres not much I can do about it. After the switch to the 2nd patch I have no supply in northern China....and with no aviation engineers there either I cant fly any AC in the far north. 6/29-6/30/42 SUBS SS Cuttlefish sinks AK Genzan Maru close to Truk. DEI Japan captures Kragan. Dutch troops throughout Java begin to withdraw back to the final bastion at Batavia. When everyone makes it back there I should have some 1300 AV on 3x terrain with level 4 forts and 50,000 supply at Batavia. The CD guns at Kragan score hits on 2 AKs before they are suppressed. Dutch bombers score a single hit on AK Amagisa Maru as they are decimated by Jap CAP. Altogether the Allies lose 43 AC this turn vs 13 Japanese AC. 13 P-40Es and 4 B-339s are lost in A2A combat over Kragan and Soerabaja. The remaining P-40E groups on Java are withdrawn and effective fighter strength on the entire island is now 3 Hurricane IIb Trops and 2 P-39Ds. Allied bombers will fly for 2 more days on Java and the remnants will then be withdrawn. SOPAC With the airfields at Rabaul and Shortlands 100% neutralized the USAAF bombers switch to port attacks....ACM Tomozono Maru is sunk in port at Rabaul. The Guadalcanal invasion force steams out of the harbor at Noumea today. The 8th Marine regiment should be hitting the beach at Lunga in 5 days. CV Hornet, CV Enterprise and CV Yorktown enlarge their fighter squadrons from 27 AC to 36 AC today and then leave port to escort the transports north. CV Wasp also joins the escorts but CV Saratoga is left behing at Noumea until she can enlarge her fighter complement. Admiral Willis "Ching" Lee on flagship BB North Dakota leads the SAG that will be covering the transports. ASW TFs with our most advanced DEs and DD Stuart from the RAN are attached both to our CV Task Group and our amphibious assault TF. CHINA StoneAge is definitely turning up the heat here. He is attacking us at Wuchow and the road junction NE of Wuchow in addition to the heavy assaults at Pingsiang. With our bombers flying again StoneAge can only muster a 1:2 attack at Pingsiang at best. StoneAge is still flying multiple bomber strikes against our positions at Kweisui in the north. Ive carefully hoarded a reserve of some 3000 AV in area around Changsha. I can use these forces as a reserve for Pingsiang or I can launch a summer offensive to try to relieve the pressure elsewhere. I cant really send any more troops to the north so if StoneAge breaks through here he is good to go. In the south his multiple attacks to exhaust and pin my front line units has also exhausted his front line units. The time may be ripe for a counteroffensive. Chinese armies worth some 2700 Av along with 2 heavy mortar regiments and an artillery regiment are ordered to shock attack an IJA division and mixed brigade on the Changsha/Nanchang highway. DD Gwin was sunk and CLAA San Diego was heavily damaged by subs but at least they didnt target the CVs. A couple weeks ago recon showed the presence of the 85th Naval Guards at Lunga. StoneAge must have pulled them out as the 8th Marine Regiment goes in unopposed. The entire operation is slightly more dangerous than a live fire exercise at Camp Pendleton but less dangerous than running into the Shore Patrol in downtown Oceanside after last call. A handfull of Marines are lost in the surf as they disembark. The amphibious assault TF moved faster than I anticipated and dropped off the troops on Guadalcanal 1 day early. My thought in including the Cebu engineer force in the initial lift was that it would help in unloading the other troops and supplies. CLAA San Diego is one of my favorite ships of the war. Every time I stay overnight in San Diego I visit the CLAA San Diego Memorial down by the Broadway Street Pier and the USS Midway Carrier Museum. She was present at virtually every major campaign since she entered the war in 1942.....she logged more miles in the Pacific than any other USN warship....and most amazingly did not suffer a single fatality during the war. The IJA artillery still causes 1000's of casualties post hot fix while 4 Allied artillery regiments in Burma are lucky to cause 100 casualties pre hot fix. We will hold here as long as possible but its only a matter of time before the artillery destroys our troops. On a better note.....there is a Chinese antitank unit in the hex next to Kweisui...should arrive in a couple of turns and we will see if the 37mm guns can take out a few IJA tankettes. SWPAC Japanese troops capture Salamaua. An amphibious assault force carying Australian troops and engineers leaves Sydney and heads north towards Milne Bay. Task Group 58....the 5 USN carrier TFs and the BB North Carolina SAG.....will rendezvous with a replenishment TF tomorrow at Point X-RAY some 80 SE of Milne Bay. After topping off their fuel they will provide cover for the Australian amphibious landings at Milne Bay on the following turn. THE AIR WAR With Rabaul's and Shortland's airfields 100% neutralized, Tenth Air Force turns its attention to the Japanese level 2 airfield at Gasmata. After scoring 45 hits on the airfield at Shortlands on the first day, some 95 B-17s score 159 hits on the airfield the next day...this is more of a stock WitP result. This assault into Nanchang will unhinge the eastern edge of the Japanese MLR in southern China. We have been planning this attack on Nanchang for 4 months....so not only are the 2500 AV fully prepped but the Corps HQ, Army HQ and China Command command HQ are 100% prepped so if we get a good die roll there will be a 90% bonus in AV. Meanwhile, 900 Chinese AV are ordered to shock attack 22nd Division in Wuchow next turn....the Chinese units are short on supply but Wuchow, like Nanchang, is in clear terrain. This should unhinge the western edge of the Japanese MLR in south China. Japan has some 1200-1400 AV recently retreated from Pingsiang after suffering heavy losses and disruption. This represents the vast majority of IJA manuver forces in south China and if improperly committed...ie thown into Nanchang....could result in the collapse of Japanese defenses in southern China. Unfortunately the Chinese are short on supply and the Japanese garrison forces are fully prepped for their respective cities so taking Canton, Hong Kong or Shanghai are out of the question...but maybe we can distract StoneAge a bit from other theatres. I might have been tempted to try to outflank IJA in Wuchow by attacking Canton from Kukong. After all, AFAIK, you just need to have troops in hex to stop supply flow and production. Not entirely sure if supplies would still get through the hex in this new hexside control model, though.

Sardaukar....my philosphy is...why go around then when you can go through them.....its quicker and more satisfying...Lol. Seriously...you have a good ponit. I am going to decimate 22nd Division this turn but with the railroad I could get an extra 1000 AV to Kukong in a couple days and then could invest Canton to isolate the 22,000 IJA troops at the road junction NE of Wuchow. Im trying to show in this AAR that even though Japanese artillery is deadly, Chinese troops are an equal match for IJA troops in clear terrain. I think jwilkerson said in a thread somewhere that during development of the land combat model for AE, Moses felt that the Chinese had the advantage in shock attacking in clear terrain because its all about who has the most AV. Ive had pretty good luck with it so far so I intend to shock attack any IJN formation I find in clear terrain...whether its 20,000 troops or 100,000. My rule of thumb is to get a nominal 1.5:1 odds in AV against the Japanese and then the shock attack should get you to the magic 2:1 odds...thats assuming adequate supply and swapped out commanders of course. Take away the artillery and the Japanese arent the bogeyman everyone thinks they are...especially in southern China where the Chinese have the advantage in manuver. SUBS SS S-38 sinks DD Kuroshiro near Kragen. SS Sailfish puts a fish in TK Arima Maru near Tanjoengbalai...must be full of fuell again cause its lights up like a tiki torch.
