racndoc -> SUBS GONE WILD! (12/20/2009 9:06:52 PM)
|
7/1-7/4/42 SUBS GONE WILD SS KVIII ID's CVL Zuiho but misses with a spead of torpedoes off Soerabaja. SS KVIII is hammered by 6 DCs for her trouble. SS O20 sinks PB Higashiyama Maru in Cam Ranh Bay. SS Spearfish spears AK Kogane Maru with a fish off Donggala. SS S-38 pumps 58 shells into AKL Misake Maru near Singapore. SS S-40 sinks AK Kogane Maru at Donggala. SS Sealion sinks DD Yudachi off Donggala. SS Pollack sinks AK Asuka Maru near Kanoya. SS Salmon takes 4 Dcs from PB Tsukikawa Maru by Wakkanai. StoneAge has a wolfpack of at least 5 subs waiting for the USN invasion force near Guadalcanal: SS RO-65 sinks DD Gwin near Guadalacanal. SS I-15 puts 2 torpedoes in CLAA San Diego off Kirakira causing 55% flotation damage and sending her back to port for repairs. CV Wasp Task Force...after losing DD Gwin and CLAA San Diego to subs off Guadalcanal....finally has its escorts wake up to dump 4 DCs on RO-65. CHINA Japan launches 2 more deliberate attacks at Kweisui....a 1:4 attack causes 1255 Japanese casualties vs 2000 Chinese and a 1:3 deliberate attack results in 1700 casualties apiece. The artillery is brutal...imagine how disproportionate the casualties would be in Japan could actually manage a 1:1 attack here. Im moving more AV to Kweisui so I can get more Chinese killed by artillery shells. Actually we are just upgrading to the hotfix for next turn and supposedly artillery effects are reduced by terrain and forts....Kweisui is 3x terrain so we will see if it has an effect. StoneAge abruptly withdraws 60,000 IJA troops from Pingsiang after 4 months of siege....either he wants to shift his forces to assault another part of the front line or he is concerned about the Chinese armies currently massing on the Changsha/Nanchang highway. Chinese armies worth some 2700 Av along with 2 heavy mortar regiments and an artillery regiment are ordered to shock attack an IJA division and mixed brigade on the Changsha/Nanchang highway. If the Chinese break through here they will next assault Nanchang and then attempt to cut Japanese occupied China in two. DEI IJA troops spread out from their beach head at Kragan to cut Java in two. Dutch bombers actually score a bomb hit on AK Matsukawa Maru at Kragan but at heavy loss...the Allies lose 32 AC here vs 8 Japanese. Im starting to pull some of the Dutch bombers and ALL of the USAAF bombers out of Java....at this point we are just throwing away good equipment for minimal effect and I want to get as many of the pilots out as possible. SOPAC I knew that StoneAge would have a sub wolfpack waiting for our invasion forces at Guadalcanal. I put all the torpedo bombers on the 5 USN CVs on 40% search/40% ASW/20% rest so there are over 30 torpedo bombers and 50 floatplanes om ASW. Here is the operation report for last turn: OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Jul 03, 42 SS Grouper reports having been sighted by the enemy at 120 , 56 SS Saury reports having been sighted by the enemy at 56 , San Diego No.9 Sqn RNZAF arrives at Noumea China Air TaskForce arrives at Kunming Supposedly the ASW AC scored 4 hits on IJN subs but I think thats just FoW. DD Gwin was sunk and CLAA San Diego was heavily damaged by subs but at least they didnt target the CVs. A couple weeks ago recon showed the presence of the 85th Naval Guards at Lunga. StoneAge must have pulled them out as the 8th Marine Regiment goes in unopposed. The entire operation is slightly more dangerous than a live fire exercise at Camp Pendleton but less dangerous than running into the Shore Patrol in downtown Oceanside after last call. A handfull of Marines are lost in the surf as they disembark. The amphibious assault TF moved faster than I anticipated and dropped off the troops on Guadalcanal 1 day early. My thought in including the Cebu engineer force in the initial lift was that it would help in unloading the other troops and supplies. Instead, the Cebu engineers and the seabees are heavily disrupted...nearly 40% in some cases so you really need to capture the base first before you can unload support personel.....a lesson learned for future amphibious operations. 8th Marine Regiment is ordered to secure Lunga tomorrow and then the seabees will begin construction of piers and airstrips.
