Terminus -> MARE BELLUM - ADMIRAL'S EDITION EDITION (9/24/2009 10:24:03 PM)

Specifically, early-war TOE's. I'm making my MB mod for AE (more fool me), and want to have the French Army of Indochina active. I have an OOB, but I have no idea how the various sub-units were filled out.

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/24/2009 11:56:49 PM)

NM, I found it myself.

Shark7 -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/25/2009 2:47:48 PM)

So are you making the Vichy or FFA full combatants? I'm personally still considering adding the Vichy as a static, restricted force in Northern Indochina.

Terminus,

Here are a couple that I have been using.

Like I said, I found it myself. But thanks all the same.

I'm making Indochina a Free French territory. They basically told Japan to <expletive deleted> off, so the Japs have to take care of that too.

NormS3 -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/26/2009 7:19:09 AM)

sorry did not see your second post, replied straight out of my email in box. After all that you all have done i get a little eager to return the favor[:D]

Dili -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/26/2009 5:47:10 PM)

If Terminus can read French there are a lot of good websites.

Daveion Steel -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/27/2009 8:35:22 AM)

The French Army? What's that?

Excerpt from the movie, 'We were soldiers'.

JWE -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/27/2009 4:05:25 PM)

Hi T,

Yeah, all the good French stuff is gonna be in French. I sent you some stuff. Maybe a good starting place is to snag this from a library somewhere:

Hesse d'Alzon, Claude. Guerre 1939-1945: La Presence Militaire Francaise en Indochine (1940-1945). [Vincennes, France]: Publications du Service Historique de l'Armee de Terre, 1985.

Historical Service does a pretty good job, and the tables ain't too hard to puzzle out [;)]

Ciao.

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/27/2009 4:19:21 PM)

Heh. Merci, and all that...

I've got an army OOB finished, and am looking to move on to the air service (such as it is) and the naval stuff (which is more interesting).

Alikchi2 -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 7:21:19 AM)

Oooh, I'm eagerly looking forward to this.

Online translators seem to do pretty well with the major European languages, so the fact the sites are in French shouldn't be too much of a hurdle to clear. I'd be interested in seeing the sites as well.

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 5:08:13 PM)

Well, I CAN read French, albeit very slowly.

Dili -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 5:29:44 PM)

Do you already have squadron commanders and such?

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 6:11:36 PM)

No. Only the top echelon of Army of Indochina commanders has been entered, i.e. the two division and seven brigade commanders.

Dili -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 6:24:44 PM)

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 6:27:25 PM)

That's one of the two or three sites I've been using.

Dili -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 6:35:22 PM)

Okay so you already had the squadron commanders. You could have SAID THAT!!![:@][:)]

What about coastal defenses. Do you have already a source?

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 6:44:51 PM)

Well, the three coastal forts already in Indochina (Cam Rahn, Cap St. Jacques and Haiphong) have mysteriously changed ownership and nationality.

Dili -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 6:59:10 PM)

If the war is to start in September 1940 the Naval Bases they were still under French.

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 7:03:19 PM)

Why would it start in 9/40?

Dili -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 7:12:22 PM)

It was when Japanese occupied. At first there was agreement and a certain number of troops could be deployed but some hours later an invasion started and combats occured.

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 7:52:51 PM)

I'm aware of that. In my mod, the Japs decided not to press the issue; the French defeat in 1940 was not complete and there's no Vichy collaborator government.

Instead, Indochina becomes another aspect of the overall Jap plan. I haven't decided on the Jap strategy yet, but it'll probably involve attacks from both Chinese and Thai territory.

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 11:00:49 PM)

Here's something else. I like doing ships more than anything when it comes to AE, so here's the French heavy cruiser Duquesne. She was France's first treaty cruiser, and had the delightfully airy armour scheme you see below (430 tons of protection on 10,000 tons of ship[sm=dizzy.gif]):

Alikchi2 -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 11:31:47 PM)

Nice! Are you going to Mers-el-Kébir happen as usual, or will there be other lovely French treats? Seems to me that the attack wouldn't happen if France doesn't go Vichy.

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 11:34:38 PM)

There will be others, but the MN will have commitments in the Atlantic and the Med as well.

Fair enough! Did you do the image yourself? It's excellent.

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/28/2009 11:46:13 PM)

It's my modification of the AE image of the La Galissionere class.

Terminus -> RE: Looking for some data on the French Army (9/29/2009 12:56:35 AM)

To round off the evening, I leave you with the Mogador, a French 4000-ton(!) destroyer capable of 39 knots. Gee, I wonder where the Japs got the idea for the Shimakaze?[:D]

But then how the harbours changed nationality? Maybe you don't want to bother moving Japanese out from Camrah Bay eh [;)]?

Yep they had some quirky ships. Maybe more of a colonial cruiser but it has speed for fleet service.

It is a disgrace that the online plans from French Navy were closed due to hacking(at least they say it was because of it). I could only get 2 or 3 ships.
