All-in-all, I'm happy with AE, yet there's one thing (right now) that remains from WITP that irks me... SFX format sound files.

What's the deal? How can I convert/use mp3 music from Victory at Sea (ok, corny maybe, but I want it)so it plays within AE/WITP?

Renaming mp3s with the sfx extension didn't work for me (or the random choice of my tunes were never made by the game.)

Help?

JF

convert to .wav and then you can rename them :-)

The .SFX suffix is just a common Windows sound format with the extension changed.  The sound engine in the game plays MP3s, WAV, and Windows Media files with equal ease.  The file name is hardcoded though.  Just rename the file you want as a replacement to the old file name and copy it into the sound folder.  Windows will pop up a warning when you change the file extension from MP3 to SFX, but say yes and all will be well.

To test out the sound files to find the ones you want to replace, click on them in Windows Explorer.  When Windows says it doesn't know what type of file it is, tell it you want to play it with whatever sound player you want and tell it to always play SFX files with that player.  It won't affect the game at all and will allow you to listen to the files one by one.

Ahem..... I'll have you know, good Sir, that there is absolutely NOTHING corny about Victory at Sea. It is a time period masterpiece and an astounding work of composition and style for the era, and should be treated with the regard of other master pieces, as opposed to Benny Hill - another type of masterpiece entirely! So, play it away! Tap your feet to Guadalcanal March. Almost get sea sick to the opening theme! Duck for cover in The Pacific Boils Over! Drink deeply of Rodgers work, it was very, very good.
