Misty99 -> BOUNCE od DIRECT Attack form old BTR: (10/1/2009 5:07:42 PM)

From the readme file from old BTR:

quote:

(1) ATTACK DIRECTIONS AND COMBAT COMPUTATION

In BTR the attacking aircraft can approach the defending aircraft from seven different
directions:

(a) above-front
(b) below-front
(c) above-side
(d) below-side
(e) above-rear
(f) below-rear
(g) directly-below

This direction is used to determine the convergence speed of the aircraft and which guns
on the defending aircraft may be used for defensive fire.

Only Axis nightfighters equiped with upward firing cannon may attack from directly below.

Fighters with DIRECT tactics will attack from a random direction (front, side or rear).
If they start with an altitude advantage then they will attack from above otherwise they
will attack from below.

Fighters with BOUNCE tactics will attempt to engage LEVEL-BOMBERS from the front and
all other aircraft types from the rear.

During a firing pass the attacking aircraft will converge with the defending aircraft.
As the aircraft draw closer both the attacker's and defensive fire will be more accurate.
Head-on attacks will have fewer chances to inflict and receive damage than attacks from the
rear.

(2) AA ROCKETS - The AA rockets available to the German player were very inaccurate, and
so you're not likely to see too many damaged or destroyed Allied aircraft due to rocket
attack. These rockets are more valuable for disruption purposes. Rockets launched
against bomber formations can cause the formation to lose its cohesion as it prepares
to drop its bombs on target, thus reducing target damage. They also help to reduce
Allied defensive fire. So, when deciding which units to equip with rockets, take caution
and make your choices wisely.

Is it the same in the new game? I think, I will put the new one on my list (after patch).

yup

Nikademus -> RE: BOUNCE od DIRECT Attack form old BTR: (10/1/2009 8:19:19 PM)

is there any real difference?

My BTR/BoB (original) experience is limited but added to my old U.S.A.A.F. (8bit) days, i always suspected that the only real choice was Bounce in terms of type of attack for best results while the only cliffhanger decision was whether or not to attack bombers or fighters.

wernerpruckner -> RE: BOUNCE od DIRECT Attack form old BTR: (10/1/2009 8:29:30 PM)

there are many differences........
bounce is not always the best choice......if your enemy uses high escorts and levels them too high, direct is best and will bring victory (esp. with heavy cannon fighters)

You do not want to bounce with Zerstörer type A/C - patrol them to the right position (in front of the raid for breaking it up or behind the raid ) and let them attack en masse.

Bounce is good for agile A/C or in areas, where you don´t expect enemy escorts
Direct is good for going in fast and weapons blazing.....

I did some tests with my old BTR (ver. 1.06, Schweinfurt raid). With Bounce, I had fewer losses as the Germans.
The AI did the intercepts.

Hi Misty,

depends on the time frame.

In 43 you can bounce as Axis, because your fighters are equal or sometimes better (as well as the pilots)
in late 44 you will often have to make hit and run attacks

Misty99 -> RE: BOUNCE od DIRECT Attack form old BTR: (10/1/2009 8:44:38 PM)

I will try a little more with the Avalanche scenario.

wernerpruckner -> RE: BOUNCE od DIRECT Attack form old BTR: (10/1/2009 8:45:40 PM)

try it with a late war scenario [8D]

Nikademus -> RE: BOUNCE od DIRECT Attack form old BTR: (10/1/2009 9:11:57 PM)

how will it show up in the combats?

Thats what i've always wondered. In USAAF, it didn't really matter even though the different tactics were supposed to differentiate. Players tend to ferret out a winning "tactic" and run it into the ground so i approach tactical "options" from that angle when designing a scenario. :)

less or more losses
it probably does not matter in an AI game, but in a PBEM you will need to be careful with your pilots

Hard Sarge -> RE: BOUNCE od DIRECT Attack form old BTR: (10/2/2009 3:43:33 PM)

one of the bigger things with this, is on Bounce, you wait, for the prefect attack, and that can mean, you wait and you wait, and at times, never get a attack in

with the other, you head right on in

so something like in the BoBs, you may not have enough fuel to get off a attack

mikkey -> RE: BOUNCE od DIRECT Attack form old BTR: (10/2/2009 7:35:36 PM)

I have one question. Can I temporarily change the doctrine for a one specific raid or specific squadron? Eg. in BOB german raid contains 40 fighters and 80 bombers. I have available only 6 Spitfire squadrons with standard Bounce Fighter doctrine. I want intercept fighters escort with 3 Spit Squadrons (like with Bounce Fighter doctrine) and with the rest of Spitfires I want attack bombers (like with Bounce/Direct Bomber doctrine). By default doctrine all Spits will seek intercept enemy fighters escort and bombers can undisturbed bombing their targets.

Hard Sarge -> RE: BOUNCE od DIRECT Attack form old BTR: (10/2/2009 7:39:11 PM)

that is a little strange

overall, the planes will attack what they got the best chance to attack, so planes that "should" target fighters can and will, target bombers and the other way around

On another tangent I bought the USAAF game from SSI for my Atari system when it came out In 1985

It was on ( I think ) 5.1/4" floppy disk and cost around £50.00 to buy in the UK as it was a US import. Played it a lot and enjoyed it which was the reason I bought the updated Talonsoft version when that was released.

yeap, that was a great game

I hunted it up, on the net, and found some screen shots of the box

unreal how "bad" it was back then, and how great it played
