Golden Bear -> Long Ago... Carlos? (10/5/2009 11:20:39 PM)

I'm just checking in to say hi to Sarge, Harley and anyone else from a few years back. I think my login back then was Carlos?

Anyway, after some struggles I have the new game working fairly well and have done a couple quick tests. It looks like escorting fighters actually do some work now rather than flying straight along and being targets. Nice improvement if I'm correct! I also like the new OBs

Do the shorter campaigns work? I always preferred the 1944 campaign and it was never supported before when new OBs and patches came out.

Anyway, hello and thanks to you guys for sticking with this until it actually got done.

Carl

Hey, Carlos!

Thanks for coming back. Werner is here, but as swift, Shags is here, otisabuser is here, but nearly always in hiding. There's a few others you'd remember, but I don't remember who is from the old place, and who isn't.

Hard Sarge -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/5/2009 11:33:52 PM)

Hey Carlos, how it going mate ?

stilling building those pretty planes of yours ?

show some more off if you got them

yea, just about the whole gang is here (other then "he that shall not be named")

yea, 44 will work, did a lot of work so that the OOB are both uptodate

the patch we working on will make a lot of it work better

funny, was just talking about you, even mentioned you are one of the few to win the game as the Allies in 44 !!!

glad you like it

Golden Bear -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 1:34:24 AM)

Hey guys! Funny, I was just trying my old BTR and found it wouldn't even load so I dropped by to see how progress was and, bingo!

I just ran the first turn for 1944 and it performs very well. Nice job everybody! But, wouldn't you know it, Zemke got captured next to Bremen right off the bat. Gabby just got promoted in his place.

If this thing has solved some of the irritating problems it will get its addictive hold back over me.

Gotta run to the store right now and ponder the next turn. The casualties were amazing for the day... like 155 Allied and 175 Axis. Wow.

Carl

Hard Sarge -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 1:39:03 AM)

oh no, we must of broke the game, I have never seen you knock down more then you have lost

:)

yea, most of the old known bugs are smashed

Golden Bear -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 2:04:55 AM)

I am also surprised and somewhat pleased. I really didn't pull out any tricks since it was my first plot in years. Just the usual with warm up raids to get planes into the air early and then a pair of heavy missions going different directions timed to split defenses. The northern mission didn't even work out well for the Forts and they got hammered because of weather delays. But the 4th was supposed to ride high cover and didn't launch until the mission was headed home and they just picked of 410s left and right.

So can I still launch a NF killer raid or did you close that bug? I might need to try that out to check up on you all. Also, what about running raids across the top of the map? Oh, and FSs from the Med running all the way up to Dover?

I don't remember which photos I shared before but I have lots of planes around these days. Here's one that is a little out of period but you probably haven't seen a model of it before!

Golden Bear -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 2:17:32 AM)

Oh, you blocked the NF trick.

"He who shall not be named"? Is that the former code holder? Could you PM me or something to give me an outline of what happened? I get wrapped up in family stuff for a couple years and the whole neighborhood gets a shake up.

Carl

Hard Sarge -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 2:48:57 AM)

nice 86, you don't see many of them around !

still, the recon model with the fancy nose is sweet looking

(odd looking, but sweet !)

very good detail

Golden Bear -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 5:11:28 AM)

Oh, yeah. Diesel engined pressurized cabin spy plane! Sweet idea there.

Steamfish -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 5:25:28 AM)

Carl, is that model made from card? That's an impressive build. Very, very nice! Please do post more!

Rick

Golden Bear -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 4:36:12 PM)

Hi Rick, yes it is made of card and paper. It was very heavy with all the 1mm card framing inside and not well printed. But I like planes from he between wars period. Unfortunately about a month after completion one of our four cats made a leap from a perch onto the floor and struck the model with his tail. "Accidently" I suppose. Anyway, after it hit the floor it shattered because of its own wait. There were too many wrinkled pieces to attempt to rebuild it so my photos are the only memory I have of it.

On the game front, I ran Turn 2 (February 21st) and wound up with a kill score of like allies 138, axis 262. So far this game has been far more brutal than what I am used to! That's 330 axis losses in two days. I bet that Arnold, Spaatz et al would have been happy with that. Admittedly I am deliberately plotting to force air combats with always multiple layers of protective fighters and not too concerned with the targets. The weather has looked good each morning but has just managed to scoot a little cloud over primary targets almost every time.

Is there a difference in combat results depending upon game speed?

Carl

Hard Sarge -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 5:14:03 PM)

yes, game speed is bad, it skips phases, so combat gets skipped at times

Golden Bear -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 7:24:10 PM)

Yes, I did some tests to confirm this. Must keep on GS1 for full results. It runs plenty fast at that speed anyway so no big deal there.

The NF and Recon planning is much better. Maybe only half the key strokes that it used to take. It only takes a couple minutes to fill the sky over a NJ runway with Mossies.

BTW, Turn 3 was another bloodbath. Allies 150+, Axis 200+. Something like 570 Axis planes destroyed in three days. We'll see if I can force the action for another day. I'm out of replacements for P47s and P51s but the other guys must also be low.

I also notice hat those darn 410s no longer get off scot free like they used to do so much in BTR. It is satisfying now to see them get their whuppin' along with all the other planes out there.

Hi Carlos or should I say Greybeard,

They've done a great job on the new version. Most of the bad old bugs have gone and lots of other operational stuff improved - multiple targets covered on a single recce sortie (one of my personal favourite), fighter-bombers that actually defend themselves, lots of new a/c variants etc.

Golden Bear -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 10:40:18 PM)

Hey Shag! Good to hear another friendly voice from the past.

Yes, I have noticed that. I am just amazed by how smooth it all is and how much I like it. I feel like I can just play and not worry about silly things happening. Although I had portions of three BGs turn the wrong way from a target and get just hammered trying to find their way home. Fortunately there was a small pod of P51s with them though.

Still wish the fatigue was shown on summary screens. I know it varies from pilot to pilot but an average or max would be fine.

I'm playing without all the tracking sheets that I used to maintain just to see how it goes. So easily available summary information is pretty necessary.

Phatguy -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 10:46:09 PM)

yeesh! what a love fest!! get back to work!!

Hard Sarge -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 11:07:52 PM)

Work ?

heck, I play games all day, some times it is even the one I am suppost to be working on :P

Golden Bear -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 11:23:03 PM)

Does somebody need a hug?

I'm a laid off burden on society, victim of uncaring selfish bureaucracy. I play games unless I'm designing card models. Oh, I did mow the lawn and clean up the yard today too. So there!

Carl

Hard Sarge -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/6/2009 11:27:35 PM)

oops, knew I forgot something

ahhh, had to save Moscow, that was more importent

on to Berlin

Steamfish -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/7/2009 2:08:09 AM)

Carl, if you have any good links to card modeling websites please feel free to post them. I'm a card modeling noob, and I'm both fascinated & impressed with what can be done using only different weights of printed paper. I'd love to see more pictures of the models you've built. They deserve their own thread!

Golden Bear -> RE: Long Ago... Carlos? (10/7/2009 4:15:02 AM)

OK, the best English language forum that I know of is www.papermodelers.com. Hopefully I'm not violating a forum rule by sharing that. There is another at zealot.com but it is very restrictive - for instance it IS cause for banishment to post a link like that. There are German sites at Kartonbau.com and Kartonist.com.

You can find me at Papermodelers mostly.
