Scouters -> "Ahistorical" results in UV (6/18/2002 2:09:33 AM)

Reading some of the many great AARs makes me realize that, documented bugs aside, what some people might call ahistorical results are really just low-probability outcomes that tend to turn up when you have dozens and dozens of people essentially recreating the battle of the south pacific. In the 95% of the occurrences where the outcome is generally expected, you tend to nod and move on. In contrast, we all remember the low probability results (the three days in a row when your carrier group canceled its airstrikes, the two subs in a row you lost to enemy destroyers, etc.) So at the end of a gaming session, you remember all the "weird stuff" and forget that these occurred among many incidents where the outcome was exactly as expected. The tendency, then, is to conclude that there is bug, either with the program or the unit values. This isn't meant as a rebuttal to everyone who thinks that they have uncovered a "bug" in the game, just something to keep in mind as you're playing. You could call it ahistorical, but even WWII is full of incredible stories that seem unbelievable - its just a product of the breadth of the conflict. -Scouters P.S. I was commanding the great fleet of the Emperor's armed forces, bringing into battle the fleeing and disorganized forces of the Americans over a small island of strategic importance. I outnumbered my opponent 2:1 in carriers and surface combatants. True to my great abilities, my plan was of the highest quality. The enemy acted in an inappropriate manner, ignoring my expert feint and concentrating his forces exactly where they would do the most damage. I have heard many incidences of your company stating "the computer does not cheat" but I say you are lying or perhaps are ignorant of the working of your own product. It was as if my opponent was aware of my great plan from the very start! I was able to appropriately destroy the outdated air forces defending the island base and I was preparing for a strike on his carriers when the enemy struck. My skilled fighter pilots dispatched most of the outclassed Americans with ease. Then I was attacked by a paltry group of dive bombers who, against all probability and ability, managed to sink three of my carriers! ! ! They weren't even engaged by my fighter cover! Against all odds, they scored hit after incredible hit! Not only this, but how did the computer know to make it's attack EXACTLY when my planes were on the decks rearming? Chance, you say? This is too much for me to take. Until this is addressed in a patch I will go back to playing Grand Theft Auto III. Sincerely, Isoroku Yamamoto iyahamoto@kaigun.net
