Hi there,

I'm a strategy games fan, got into WitP an AE recently and love them. I was thinking bout getting Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich, but I'm not sure how this airwar strategy game plays. Any hints ,shoud I get it or not, as I knwo there is no demo.

cheers

Mac

not trying to be smart, but wouldn't I be the last person to ask ?

I may be a little bias

:)

so far, it is looking like most of the people are happy

I'm also a WITP-er (and a long-lasting one, been playing that jewel since it's release in 2003). If you like WITP, you'll love this game.

It's relatively slow paced, has a lot of turns (longest campaign spanning for 700 turns, one day per turn), it has an incredible level of detail and your strategic decisions will need time to come to fruition so it requires a lot of patience.

I will say that both WITP and Eagle day to Bombing the Reich have the pure Gary Grisby signature all over it. He's a game designer that you'll love or you'll be bored by, there's no middle term. I'd say that if you liked WITP:AE and it seems you did, then you'll enjoy this game a lot.

Richard III -> RE: Should I get it? (10/6/2009 8:18:26 PM)

Other then a few issues for folks with new dual cores ( which the team is fast to help fix ) the game runs fine on my old Celeron 2.8 Ghz. It`s stable, and if there are bugs I don`t see any that effect Game play so far.

The Game, like most of Gary`s work has great depth and there`s levels of detail in this new, enhanced version of the game as far as tactics and mission planning ( which is the core of the sim. ) that`s not covered in the manual ( like WITP ) However, the Mods and BOB/BTR vets are fast to help with questions/comments and do so with good humor and in great detail. If you liked WITP you will like BTR IMO.

+1

I've just purchase this game but the GG signature is clear.

The feeling is I'm learning a very solid game.
I studied well rules And now I'm passing time to read AAR's.
They are mines of strategic ideas and tactics suggestion

Almost one for each game are simply great jobs.

I suggest you to read some AAR's posts.
If you are a WitP veteran I think you can understand if you like Strategic air war over Europe as modelled in these games.

Golden Bear -> RE: Should I get it? (10/6/2009 8:53:22 PM)

That is a tough question. I have owned BTR and BoB from the day they each first came out and have investted countless hours in it. It seems to me that it is a game that can really and involve certain people but leave others just cold.

Are you interested in the period and read a lot about the European war and air war? Are you fascinated by airplanes? If yes, then this might be a good one for you.

Personally it was a no brainer for me to buy and this new release is soooooo much better than what we lived with for years with TOH_BTR.

I think you should get it for me......because i had to deal with Speedy long before you did thus i deserve compensation.

Then i could kick his butt again like I did the last time. [:)]

Terminus -> RE: Should I get it? (10/6/2009 9:26:46 PM)

And for me... For the same reason...[:D]

Macca -> RE: Should I get it? (10/6/2009 9:30:33 PM)

Thanks for all the answers;)

Now you got me thinking, lads.Seems I'm gonna get it soon then;) I love WW2 airplanes, WW1 Airplanes, every flying crate that exists, and been a long and dedicated flight simmer, since I was 8yr old;)

I have a quad core Intel q6600, hope it will run ok. WITPAE is a monster, I suck in this game but I love it because of its depth and all this factors that are taken into account. So if you say this game has similar feeling - I'm in;)

Tally ho!

Mac

He wasn't as annoying as he is now. Hence i get bonus miles from having put up with him from UV through WitP

Hard Sarge -> RE: Should I get it? (10/6/2009 11:09:10 PM)

Well.....

you know what you can get with bonus points and 50 cents

Terminus -> RE: Should I get it? (10/6/2009 11:19:28 PM)

If you like WiTP and AE you're going to enjoy this one, too. Get it. You won't regret it.

Misty99 -> RE: Should I get it? (10/7/2009 9:16:18 AM)

Although I have the old BTR, I will buy the new one too. Im very interested in WWII in Europe, but not much in the Pacific theatre. So I dont own WitP or AE.
My father was in the Luftwaffe (ground crew). 1944 he was in France on an airfield near Versailles. He told me, that on this airfield, they had ME 410īs as recon planes. Before D-Day, they flew over England only in the night and dropped flash bombs to take pictures.

Golden Bear -> RE: Should I get it? (10/7/2009 4:54:36 PM)

If you own and like BTR, then you should buy this in my opinion. It fixes sooo many things. You still need to do some workarounds - switching units to get different fighter escorts for instance, but it is well worth the investment.

jomni -> RE: Should I get it? (10/9/2009 6:31:49 AM)

My profile:

1) I'm interested in WW2 but prefer PTO since I am Asian.  That's why I'm a avid WITP fan.

2) I'm interested in air war and play sims a lot. But prefer jets.  Il-2 is boring.

3) I have never played the original games.

So you think I should buy this game and eat up my WITP time? :D

Half of me says 'yes'.

Nik/T- Pffft. Dumbasses!

HS is right. It's been many a year since he's had to put up with me. Sheesh must nearing 10 years! Sheesh.......mind you sarge you were young then?[;)]

Hard Sarge -> RE: Should I get it? (10/9/2009 3:18:51 PM)

jomni -> RE: Should I get it? (10/10/2009 9:48:15 AM)

Just go it.
Played a one day BOB as England game and lost. :)
Didn't even read the manual.

If you ask me, I still prefer WitP AE over this.
But not comparable as these are different genres.

Oliver Heindorf -> RE: Should I get it? (10/10/2009 6:50:02 PM)

hehe, same as joni here, but I am from germany. just got it

didnt read the manual - no printed one !!! - Matrix deserves an E for it -basta.

I am a UV and WITP veterean from day one, bought AE and still hang around there, just started the LW one day campaign and lost but Dover radar is gone now.

in this game, the planning phase is immense and the turn is compared to the planning phase quite short.

I have to sort out the planning stuff firt to have an opinion on this game and of course...reading the manual.

good thing is that there is a tutorial - and then - as usual - the step by step technology.

jomni -> RE: Should I get it? (10/11/2009 7:52:10 AM)

What's good about this game is that it's like a 2-in-1 game.
Gameplay as attackers and defenders are quite different that it's like two different games.

Due to the nature of the game (limited scope), what I don't like is that there's little satisfaction in finishing a day.
Unlike WitP where you get so see bases captured, ships sunk, and planes shot down.
Here it's just planes shot down, and some facilities damaged.

KenchiSulla -> RE: Should I get it? (10/11/2009 12:31:51 PM)

If you are into the airwar during world war 2, buy it :-), its worth every cent.

Grotius -> RE: Should I get it? (10/11/2009 4:32:08 PM)

I hate you guys. I'll probably have to buy this now. :)

Well, it's not solely your fault. I just finished a campaign game of "RAF (2nd edition)", a solitaire boardgame that models the Battle of Britain. I had great fun with it. Anyone ever played it?

davidjruss -> RE: Should I get it? (10/11/2009 5:50:46 PM)

Grotius,

Yes I also have the game ( published by West End Games ).

I think mine is the original version dated 1986.

Joel Billings -> RE: Should I get it? (10/11/2009 11:07:33 PM)

As pathetic as it may be to admit this, I actually took RAF on my honeymoon to New Zealand and Bora Bora in 1989. I had just recently purchased RAF and was really enjoying it. I managed to get a few hours in playing it during the few times my wife went out shopping without me. It's a great game. Luckily my wife is a big strategy/scrabble gamer (but not a wargamer) so she understands the need to game. Gary and I used to play the original Fighter Command by mail (before email), and I found RAF to be the next best thing.

jomni -> RE: Should I get it? (10/12/2009 2:14:19 AM)

I played RAF. Nice and simple game.  Eagle Day actually encouraged me to look into it again.
But RAF combat resolution is quite wierd though.
