cambronne -> Screen size problem (10/8/2009 1:11:32 PM)

Admittedly, this is a computer configuration issue, but I figured someone here might be able to fix my problem.
I recently bought a new widescreen monitor and when I attempt to play COG, the image is now stretched out to fit the dimensions of the wider screen. This pretty much ruins the images to the point where I have a hard time making identifying individual units.

Can anyone explain how I can reconfigure my screen size so as to bring the COG image back to more of a square from a widescreen recatangle?

Cambronne,

That display mode is usually called "maintain aspect ratio" and you should find it on either your graphics card settings or on your monitor (or both!).

A 4:3 image (ie non-widescreen game) will be displayed with black bars to the sides rather than being stretched.

Hope this helps,

I have been looking but am unable to find it either in the monitor/display files.
I will keep trying, but in the meantime wanted to thank you.

This is interesting. I need to try this.

I have had luck because since switching to an Intel chipset iMac, the monitor is huge and is closer to the 4:3 dimensions required. I am happy playing as is on my windows side.

First, I'm pretty dumb when it comes to computers.

I have hunted and have not been able to find a way to make the cahnges you suggest.

I can't even find where to see the "graphics card settings".
Could you give me some directions?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Cambronne,

I'm not much of an Windows expert either, but I'll try to help. First, about graphics cards: you will either have a separate card (ATI or Nvidia) or an integrated card (usually Intel) in your PC.
In your icon tray (bottom right of your screen, next to the system time), you might see an icon for ATI/Nvidia/Intel. Double click on that icon.

If you do not see any icon there, try these methods instead:
- right click on an empty place on your desktop and see if ATI/Nvidia/Intel shows up in the little window. If so, select that.
- If not, select "properties" in the pop-up window, and then see if there is a tab entry for ATI/Nvidia/Intel. Select it.
- If not: go to the control panel (start menu-> control panel), select "display", "settings", "advanced" and find the ATI/NVIDIA/Intel tab.

Any of the above methods will bring you to the control screen of your graphics card. There you'll have to go through the options to see which says something about "aspect ratio" or "fixed ratio".

I've attached a screen shot of the ATI screen. I'll attach another screenshot in a followup post (since we can attach only once per post).

Hope this helps; if not, feel free to ask again.
If anyone reading has a link to a website explaining this better than I can, please post!

Cheers,
-von Schmidt

Another screen shot: a few steps to get to the graphics control screen.
