VictorH -> UV Still Locks Up when Zoom is Used (6/19/2002 8:43:46 AM)

I just installed the 1.10 patch and have the very same problem. When ever I use the Z key or the Zoom button the game locks up within a second or 2.

Any other suggestions other than truning off Hardware Acceleration? Seems silly to have to do this considering it's not necessary for any other game I play. Also I don't have some exotic system, I am using the best components albeit a year behind the current systems.

David Heath -> (6/19/2002 9:21:33 AM)

Hi Victor

I am sorry but in this case that is the best answer we can offer. Its a DirectX issue with your hardware. That is Microsoft answer to us.

David

VictorH -> Which Hardware Component (6/19/2002 9:44:24 AM)

Hi David,

I have looked at Microsoft's DirectX info and can't find anything about Hardware Incompatibilities? What hardware do they say is incompatible and where do they say it. It's not that I don't believe you, I just want to be certain that when I build another PC I use the right components. Also, I may replace whatever component they say is incompatible in my current machine.

Reg -> Blame the Drivers (6/20/2002 4:19:43 PM)

I have a Diamond Viper 770 TNT2 video card in a Win98 system.

I originally had troubles running this game, DirectX update fixed that. Then I had the infamous 'Venitian Blind Effect' where the zoom function caused the two scaled maps to be displayed superimposed over each other in vertical stripes. Quite an interesting look. The combat icons on the normal map were similiarly affected.

So, time to update the drivers. I'm not sure what version the old drivers were but they were downloaded from the Nvidia site about 2 years ago and had worked faultlessly with everything so far (except UV).

Downloaded the latest Nvidia Detonator XP drivers - Win98 version (4.13.01.2832) and Yahoo, the combat icons are clear (so that is a pair on binoculars on the sight ring......). The zoom even revealed a perfectly clear large scale map, BUT.....

SCROLL that map and the machine locks instantly!!!!!

This occurs with both clicking on the full map in the corner or running the mouse to the map edge. As described elsewhere, it takes a full reboot (blackout simulation) to recover. Not only that but now my system icons (Start button and window close icons etc) now become corrupted.

I HATE playing round with a stable system and it shows how highly I hold UV to update system files just to play a game. However, I cannot understand why a game that just displays a map, places a few icons on it and plays a few sounds, seems to require the cutting edge of technology to run.

Typical M$oft answer - They make changes and it's everyone else's fault that nothing works anymore.

Cheers,
Reg.

If you have a close look at the Game Specs you will find that it by no means uses cutting edge technology ;).

However driver updates are not there just for fun but to fix serious problems. So, regardless of you think your system is "stable" or "runs without a glitch" frequent driver updates are a must.

Since it is not a "win98/TNT2" issue, cause UV runs with both the Os and the card. Can you please give me a detailed system specs list of your machine ?

Reg -> (6/20/2002 6:01:02 PM)

What I meant is that the game requires the latest DirectX which seems to need the latest video drivers and won't play unless it gets it. I am just surprised the requirements are so high when so few features are used, though I can understand that there probably heaps of nifty new routines in the DirectX API that the programmers want to use.

I am alway a bit shy of updating too quickly as I heard a few rumours about how the early DirectX 7 caused some problems. Always better to let others do the beta testing before you update later.

However in this case, I posted to give you what I hope is some further info. Before I upgraded the Nvidia drivers the Z function displayed incorrectly but scrolled and after the update the display was perfect but the machine lock on scroll fault appeared. There might be a clue in there.

I know that this is not your problem but it is a nuisance the the latest DirectX/hardware drivers are required when there are obviously still a few issues outstanding between the manufacturers.

By the way, I love the game and will still play it (a lot) but I will be avoiding the z key.

My setup is a PIII-450 on a ASUS P2-99 M/B with 128MB RAM and Viper 770 video running Win98SE (how detailed do you want to get?? - more details on request).

Hope you can sort this out,
Reg.

Did you completely uninstall the old Nvidia drivers before installing the new ones? If not that could be part of the problem as new drivers won't completely overwrite the old ones.

As an aside I have the latest DirectX on my XP system at home, but not the latest Nvidia drivers and I've had no problems to date. I'll test zooming tonight although I know I've used it at least once or twice without a problem.

Hello Marc,

I gave my system configuration to David Heath on another thread a week or so ago. He said he was going to pass it onto you. Did you get it? I have a Soyo Motherborad running a Riva TNT2 Ultra.

Do I need to send it all again?

Marc von Martial -> (6/21/2002 3:37:20 PM)

Hi,

please send it again, along with your BIOS revision number (you can note that down right when the PC boots up; lower left corner, hit [PAUSE] to find time to note it). Your request might have been lost during the busy patch phase ;)

VictorH -> My System Config (6/22/2002 6:26:50 AM)

Hi Marc,

Here's my system details:

My System Config is as follows:

Soyo 6BA+ IV-2AA2 Motherboard

BIOS - 09/20/1999-i440BX-ITE867-2A69KS2IC-00
128MB Ram
Pentium III 550
Diamond Viper V770 AGP Riva TNT2 Pro 32MB - running NVIDIA's lastest Detonator XP Driver
Creative 32X CD-Rom
Creative SB Live - running lastest driver
Western Digital 10GB ATA33 & 6GB ATA33 Hard-Drives - FAT32
1.4 Floppy Drive
AIWA Bolt Tape backup
IIyama a901ht Vision Master Pro 450
Linksys LNE 100TXv4
MS Intellimouse Explorer - v4.0
Canon BJ200
APC Back UPS-Pro 500 v1.0.2
Altec Lansing Speakers
Win98 SE - Patched to latest version
DirectX 8.1 SDK
I.E. 5.50.4807.2300
Resolution is set to 32 Bit Color 1024 by 768

Whenever I run the game I shut down my Virus Scan which is McAfee's Latest Version v4.5.1 SPI with Scan Engine 4.1.60.

I leave my firewall running which is Zone Alarm v2.6.362. Even if I have the firewall shut down the zoom feature locks the system.

I must confess that I did not. However, I have deinstalled and knocked the drivers back to the original Diamond ones. Tried to update from the Diamond site but not surprisingly it is gone. Looks like we are stuck with Nvidia. Reinstalled the Detonator 28.32 drivers and the problem is still there.

However, I noticed Nvidia have released Detonator 29.42 drivers in the last couple of days which I am downloading at the moment (will keep you posted).

DirectX 8.1 is built into XP so that configuration is likely work well.

VictorH.
You have a Viper 770 too. Hmmm.....
Mine is the standard 16Meg model but seems to display the same issues.

Hopefully we can nut this out...
Cheers,
Reg.

VictorH -> Detonator Drivers (6/22/2002 9:06:53 AM)

Reg,

The Diamond Drivers are @#$%! I couldn't get my Viper to work with them at all. I have used Nvidia's Detonator Drivers since with no problems with any game other than UV??? The other day I downloaded the 29.42 drivers and still have the same problem. The only thing that works is to turn Hardware Acceleration down 3 notches. But that is unacceptable to me, since I don't have any problems with any other games, such as CIVIII, Europa Universalis nor the other Matrix games with Hardware Acceleration set at the default max setting.

Hopefully Marc can figure this out. I talked the American Soccer Team into letting the Germans win this morning so he would help us out ;)

Reg -> (6/22/2002 11:06:43 AM)

Victor,

That's interesting as I was about to say that detonator 29.42 had no effect but with my Diamond drivers, everything is working again.

I got scroll in zoom, good combat icons on main map and it seems to have fixed the system button corruption problem. My Diamond drivers (Ver 4.11.01.0402) are dated 2-13-2000 (the drivers that came with the video card were dated 4-22-1999).

I have did have the NVIDIA Display Driver for Windows 9x version 4.12.01.0522, 05/18/2000 installed which allows scroll as stated above but gives the striped zoom map and icon effect. At least that one doesn't affect the system icon/buttons.

I think I will see how I go with the Diamond drivers but it remains to be seen if it has any effect on my flight sims (EAW being the main one).

Cheers,
Reg.

Marc von Martial -> (6/22/2002 7:19:14 PM)

@ Reg, you should be very fine for EAW with the Diamond drivers. I speak from experience ;)

@VictorH: I see you have a very old BIOS revision running. May I ask you to try a BIOS update please. That fixed problems for a lot of users since.

Go here for needed Motherboard upgrade bins:

http://www.soyousa.com/downloads/selectresults.php?col1=Proc_Intel+PIII%2C+PII%2C+Tualatin&col2=61&col3=All

Go here for the knowledge base in case you don´t know how to flash a BIOS:

http://www.soyousa.com/search/index.php?searchtype=Knowledge+Base&product=0&query=&order=Date

Why do you have the DirectX 8.1 running as SDK ?

Hope this helps

VictorH -> BIOS Updated (6/23/2002 9:12:15 AM)

Hello Marc,

As requested I updated the BIOS for my Motherboard to-

6BA + IV-2BA3

07/11/2000 - i440BX-ITE867-2A69KS2IC-00

As I expected it made no difference. As a matter of fact once I use the Zoom button the game locks up immediately. Before updateing my BIOS I could scroll around for a second or 2 before it locked up.

I am running the DirectX 8.1 SDK for 2 reasons, one is, it is the most recent version of DirectX that I know of, and your FAQ's say to upgrade everything to the latest version. The reason I am running the SDK is I play around with the graphics stuff because I'm trying to learn how to program wargames. Also I like the diagnositic tooll in the SDK that tells me what all the versions of all the drivers/dll's are. :confused:

Marc von Martial -> (6/23/2002 6:45:35 PM)

Hmm, too bad.

I´m a bit out of answers at the moment. Give me two or three days please.

VictorH -> No Problem (6/24/2002 12:06:16 AM)

No problem Marc, take what time you need. Thanks for Your Help.

anthonykevinluke -> ZOOM LOCK UP (6/25/2002 12:53:35 PM)

Greetings, I have just purchased UV and in my quick glance through it last night struck the "zoom bug". If I zoom and then move the screen I get a complete lock up within a few seconds. I do note that I can zoom in and examine things within that screen and then zoom out without it jamming. It only seems to jam if I try to move the zoomed screen about. I am running a PIII 500e with 128 meg ram, Nvidia TNT2 Ultra card, Vibra 128 sound card, on a WIN98 SE system. Being a computer numpty (inadequate software/hardware skills/knowledge) I have not updated any of my drivers/cards since I purchased the system about a year ago. I will attempt to update some time in the future but am really wary of doing something wrong and screwing the entire system. I have also noted an odd lock up as it goes through the allied turn on some occassions. I look forward to reading more trouble shooting and update walk-throughs/guides. Courage.

VictorH -> Agree (6/28/2002 10:22:02 PM)

I have to agree with you Tony.

The zoom feature may not be the entire problem. It's the same for me. When I zoom the system does not lock up immediately, it only does so after I have scrolled, also it has done so when I clicked on the Global map to relocate the screen view to another part of the Pacific. Also I don't have any problems if I don't use the zoom key or button at all. That is using the defauylt screen view I can scroll and relocate to my hearts content.

It is a coincednece that you and I have the same video cards and have the same problem! What Motherboard are you using?

I will have to try just zooming in and out without scrolling on the close in view to see if the problem arises. I will post my results.

Hopefully Marc is still paying attention to this thread so this problem can be fixed in the next patch.

Yep, I do but have been busy this week with managing some stuff for marketing. Sorry, for the delay. I´m looking up FAQs and troubleshooters of your hadrware in between.
