Larry Reese -> Strange Combat Behavior (10/22/2009 5:09:44 PM)

Recently purchased FoF, think it's great. Noticed something odd though: In one game I had a large player army versus a small computer army, the computer army would try to evade battle, and would do so successfully, however, the battle routine ('clashing of swords' and going to the quick combat screen) would start again. After this happened six times or so, the enemy force either successfully broke away or was worn down to nothing (by losses in pursuit).

Is this supposed to happen? Does this represent the smaller force being unable to disengage for some reason? Is this a bug?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm running 1.10.10. on Vista Home Premium.

Hi, I don't think you will be disappointed in FoF.  Get the latest patch, version 1.12.2 since it fixes a number of issues, none major but some that had been irritating.  It also makes it a bit more difficult for the Union.

I do not ever recall seeing the combat effects that you are reporting but then virtually all my FoF combat is detailed rather than quick or instant.  Perhaps the smaller force was facing off against a larger one with significantly better leadership and unit attributes and your army was trying to trigger a combat in each of the movement increments but that's just a wild a** guess.

Reference your other thread, I do not know of any consolidated synopsis of the scenarios but some of the AAR's found here:  http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tt.asp?forumid=400  go into significant detail on the scenario "guts".  However, scenarios are easily moddable with any spreadsheet editor like M$ Excel.

Good Luck with FoF.

Thanks. Do you know if you can update the game engine with the new patch without screwing up a game currently under way?

hmmmm, well, I found out the saves are not compatible, version to version. Lost the game. No big deal though.

Was what you saw a one-time thing? It's hard for me to tell just what happened, but it could just be a lucky (or unlucky) series of "dice rolls" that led to multiple engagements, sort of like flipping a coin and getting "heads" six times in a row. Please let us know if this happens again.

Glad to know you're enjoying the game.

Yes, it only happened once. I suspected it might be just lucky dice rolls, but hadn't played the game long enough to know whether that was normal or not. I'll advise if it happens again.
