(This is the Japanese side of the game. The allied thread is called Battleship fetish - the Allied side of A Different War /Juan (J) vs csatahajos(A)) Greetings. I recently started a PBEM game using the Alternate WNT scenario Ive been working on for the past few months. Following a restart because of database errors, I decidede I would try and write an AAR for that game, so that people get a chance to see some of the changes in this scenario. Ill also include some more background for the events following the point of departure (Washington Naval Treaty of 1922) in this alternate history. This will be a closed AAR, so sorry csatahajos, no peeking...[;)] Were using the following options, and some simple HRs; Options PDU - On FOW - On Weather - On Real R&D - On Allied DC - On Reliable Torps - Off No Withdrawals - Off Reinforcements - +/- 60 days Dec 7th Surprise - On Historical First Turn - Off HRs 1. Allies can only form TFs offmap or on the West Coast during Turn 1 2. Allies can give or change the orders of anything except the Chinese units, the 3 USN CV groups, Forces Z and X, and the Dutch BC TF 3. Japan limited to work on two BB or CVL conversions at any time 4. Japan limited to work on four CVE or CA conversions at any time 5. Japan will withdraw KB from Hawaii area on Turn 2, striking PH only on Turn 1 5b. Because this is a restart, and the PH attack in the first game was very weak, Japan will only use 4 CVs for the PH strike - if more are used, their airgroups must be stood down for Turn 1 6. Japan will not attack Russia 7. No moving Kwangtung LCUs into China without paying PPs 8. No moving Chinese LCUs into Manchuria (Japan) or Burma (Allies) without paying PPs 9. No moving Thai LCUs into areas other than Thailand, Indochina, and Malaya 10. The Montana and Illinois class BBs cannot use the Panama canal 11. The FD-1 Phantom and TB2D-1 Skypirate can only operate from land bases or the Midway class CVBs More to follow!

Group patrol altitude is 20000 Time for all group planes to reach interception is 48 minutes Unfortunately, the Lexington class battlecruiser supposedly located at Pearl Harbour was not attacked. Likewise, the modern North Carolina class battleship was only lightly damaged. However, I'm fairly certain I've put several of the older BBs out of action atleast for a month or two at the least. Airstrikes Elsewhere, air strikes were launched against Singapore (Port+AF), Manila (Port+AF), Clark Field (AF), Iba (AF), Georgetown (Port+AF) and Alor Star (AF). Most of these were successful, with only light losses incurred. The attack on Manila in particular, while not sinking anything, put bombs into 8 different USN Submarines, and CA Wichita and CL Raleigh. Round 2 above Manila in the afternoon was much less favorable, with 22 P-40Es savaging the lightly escorted strike, downing 8 Betties and a Zero for one of their own, and disrputing the strike completely. In the southern Philippines, near Siquijor, CL Phoenix was attacked by the D3A1 Vals from CVL Shokaku and sunk. Landings In Malaya, the initial landings at Kota Bharu began, and in northern Luzon, Japanese paratroopers secured unopposed what will become the landings areas in the next few days. Cl Phoenix The CL Phoenix believed sunk yesterday was found in the afternoon trying to flee the Philippines - after another attack by the airgroups of Shokaku, she has been sunk. Malaya The landing foces at Kota Bharu captured the area with only minor casualties, driving the defending Commonwealth forces south into the jungle. An Air HQ, Engineering units, and more infantry are due to arrive in the next few days. The airwar over Malaya is rather tame, with the few allied strikes being driven off by Nates and Oscars, but mostly without kills. Kido Butai The Kido Butai moved to the west of Hawaii, and will split next turn, with Amagi and Akagi escorting the tankers to Truk, and the remaining four carries moving to Kwajalein.

Task forces break off...... The battle was fierce, and I was rather worried the greater number of allied DDs would mean they could put a torpedo into Ibuki or Iwaki. Thankfully this was not the case, and early hits on Wichita compromised its ability to fight back effectively. Deprived of their only major unit, the allied force was picked apart. Iwaki took one 8" hit, but this appears to have caused little damage despite penetrating the belt - only systems damage is up by 7 points. However, recon shows there is another USN CA or CL in the area, and Ibuki's force almost completely out of ammo. They will retire to Cam Ranh Bay to rearm. The only surface forces immediately available are three DDs to the west which came across Wichita two nights ago, exhanging fire uselessly before withdrawing. Time for all group planes to reach interception is 6 minutes However, post combat reports indicate that our own losses were underestimated in the inital report, and we actually lost 3 A6M fighters rather than the officially reported 1. Malaya The landings continue, with the 3rd Air Division HQ arriving at Kota Bharu, and a wing of A6Ms and G3Ms transferring to the still somewhat cratered field there. There are several more divisions due to arrive by rail out of Thailand shortly. Philippines The battleship and escort carrier force led by Hyuga finds and strikes several groups of fleeing ships east of Mindanao. Further to the west, bombers from Shokaku find and strike at Houston, but do no damage and loose several of their number. Shokaku will begin to retire towards Badeldaob to join up with the Hyuga force. Wake Landing forces begin to unload at Wake in the morning, and despite heavy CD fire, which sets several ships ablaze, successfully land their troops. By nightfall Wake is under Japanese control, and several thousand US troops have surrendered. Hong Kong An initial push against Hong Kong results in a 1:1 and reduces forts. Unfortunately the troops were not in shape to attack again tommorow, so I will return to bombarding for a day or two.

Turn 6 - December 12th 1941 Borneo-Mindanao Area The string of surface battles last turn finally finds explanation today, when recon assets from Jolo and Badeldaob locate an allied TF consisting of the British ships BB Jellicoe and BC Howe. This means that the two cruisers sunk yesterday were likely an advance force, or were intended to meet up with this group. Recon also suggests the TF may include Dutch ships, possibly including the BC De Zeven Provincien. Airstrikes are launched against this force from Shokaku and Jolo to no effect. Kirishima is making slow progress toward Badeldaob, and her damage control parties report progress in reducing the flooding. It will still be several days before she is able to reach safety however. The group led by Hyuga will divert immediately into the combat zone, and will probably be on scene in two days. Another force led by Kaga, originally based at Cam Ranh Bay to assist in operations along Malaya, as been dispatched to the area. They are due in 3-4 days. A group led by Echizen and Shinano will move to Cam Ranh Bay to assume their duties. CA Houston was, once again, still afloat. I-164 put a torpedo into her during the morning, and she was once again attack by Shokakus aircraft. This time the group reported seeing her go under, and diverted to attack her sole escort, the DD Pillsbury. Perhaps it is finally over. Shokaku herself came under air attack by Dutch bombers in the afternoon, but while they managed to penetrate the CAP of 5 A6Ms, they failed to score any hits. Luzon S-36 which has been taking shots at transports near Vigan is forced to surface by ASW and finally scores its first and last kills in a gun fight with a group of SCs and PBs. The landings here are nearing completion, and the forces have begun to move inland. Other Guam is landed on and captured. Brunei is captured.

Turn 7 - December 13th 1941 Borneo-Mindanao Area The situation seems to have diffused, with the British ships withdrawing. Nevertheless, I am still moving Kagas group into the area. They will make a breif run outside Balikpapan, and then retire to Badeldaob. The invasion forces for Manado and Ternate are on their way and should arrive in 3-4 days. Hawaii I-173 spots a battleship TF leaving PH to the south. The southern portion of Kido Butai has been ordered to reverse course and see if I can strike at it before withdrawing. There has been no sign of the allied carriers so far. Other This turn also sees Shortlands and Victoria Point fall. Invasions also occur along the north coast of New Guinea. Turn 8 - December 14th 1941 Philippines Several strikes by G4Ms and G3Ms completely batter several groups of allied transports trying to move south of Manila, no doubt to exploit what the allies perceive to be a weakening in my forces there. A dozen ships are sunk, and only one aircraft is lost upon crash landing. Kido Butai Moving east, KB has yet to encounter anything. They will continue in this direction for one more turn, and then must turn to Kwajalein due to fuel concerns. The tanker TF with the northern section is due in Truk in two days, where it will refuel and move to Kwajalein. The north section of KB consisting of Akagi and Amagi will most likely move into the DEI, and suppress allied forces by striking at Soerabaja and other ports in the area. Hong Kong Thr forts at Hong Kong fall to 0 after another deliberate attack, which causes very few losses to the attacking Japanese. Orders are to continue the assault tommorow, which will hopefully cause this fortress to fall once and for all.

Turn 9 - December 15th 1941 South Pacific A pair of AKLs returning from landing troops and supplies at Shortlands finds themselves in trouble when CA Canberra and CL Perth decide to say hello at night. Kido Butai has not spotted any new targets, and worse than that, has been spotted by allied recon. They will now reverse course to Kwajalein and increase CAP to make sure any curious patrol aircraft encountered in the future take a swim. An invasion force for Rabaul is assembling at Truk. This force will be escorted by BB Harima with aircover from the southern section of KB. They are due to depart in 2-4 days. The north section of KB will move to Badeldaob, and from there support my moves on Kendari and Balikpapan. I have started shipping troops to Truk in preparation of an invasion of either Noumea or PM. SRA - Java I-165 spots BB Jellicoe entering Soerabaja. Clearly the British forces seem to have backed off now that Kaga and other reinforcements are in the area. The invasion forces for Manado and Ternate approach. A group of 2 BB, 2 CVL, 2 CVE led by Hyuga is moving to provide cover. Kirishima arrives at Badeldaob. Initial estimates say she will be out of the war for atleast two months. She will move to either the Home Islands or Hong Kong for repairs. Other Hong Kong resists another attack at 1 to 1 - seems the crafty British engineers had managed to rebuild fortifications to level 1 overnight! Landings at Legaspi come to an end and it is captured. Turn 10 - December 16th 1941 SRA - Java I-157 continues the recent successes of my submarine recon when she spots the BC De Zeven Provincien entering Soerabaja. Unfortunately, like I-165 yesterday, she is not in a position to attack before the escorts close in. She manages to escape unharmed - before running into a mine. Other Hong Kong once again holds out, having yet again restored forts to 1 during the night. I'm very tempted to send Echizens group in to bombard next turn, but as there is no great hurry, I'll just keep attacking for now. I've ordered a large airraid on Hong Kong tommorow to help suppress the troops there. BB Sagamis group departs from Kota Bharu, emptying their magazines at Kuantan on the way, and devastating the airfield and few aircraft based there. They will retire to Cam Ranh Bay to rearm and then move to support landings on North Borneo.

I will make sure that any attempt like this on the Rabaul invasion ends badly for the Allies. The invasion force started loading today, I expect KB to arrive at Kwajalien on the 19th/20th, and so the forces will head out on the 21st. Ill have the surface battlegrop led by Harima leave a day early as bait. SRA The invasion forces for Manado and Ternate continue to approach. I've gathered my ships at Badeldoab for rearming. To the north, the Echizen force will divert to cover landings at Kuching on the 19th. Other Nothing noteworthy, the J2He1 Mike and the Ki-44 Tojo, both deployed in experimental units, see their first bits of combat today, over Aparri and Nanchang respectively. He is likely to have the following assets in the area, if he is serious about fighting here; BB Jellicoe (Confirmed) BB Beatty BC Howe (Confirmed) BC De Zeven Provincien (Confirmed) CV Illustrious He may also have brought; BB Warspite CVL Hermes I am rather confident my surfaces forces can handle anything he throws at me, as while Jellicoe and Beatty are fast and have good AA, they mount reused 15in/42s, which are inferior to my Tosa's 41cm/45s. Howe on the otherhand mounts the new 15in/50, which is comparable to my 41cm. It is also well armoured and has rather dangerous AA (AA value of ~1200 if I remember correctly). De Zeven Provincien is only really a threat to my cruisers or at very short ranges. If he has brought Warspite along, he may have the advantage on the surface. However, I am confident Shokaku's group can handle any CVs he does bring along, which I think is unlikely as he knows I have a CV group in the area. However, only Hosho is fully loaded with torpedoes, and in total the group only carries 9 (6 on Hosho, 3 on Zuiho). Considering the quality of British AA, this is unlikely to be decisive, and that is why I want KB in the area ASAP, so that if he does show up, those ships wont be going anywhere in the future. Yeah, there were actually two hits beyond that here. One by Ise on Express at 30,000 yards, and another by Jellicoe on Hyuga's belt at 27,000 yards. Records are made to be broken. [;)] Then again, this was pretty much picture perfect 'Decisive Battle' conditions for the IJN, with Clear daylight and good visibility. Shame the decision was not in their favour...

So, its been a while. Its now February the 13th, and the war is moving into the next major phase after the fall of the Philippines and Malaya. Its been a rather quiet two and half months since the major defeat sufferred by the USN near Celebes. The only action involving a major surface unit since then was when BB Warspite bombarded my troops massing for a move on Rangoon on the coast of Burma. Rangoon itself looks to have been heavily fortified, and the attack on it is due to commence next week once the last of the reinforcements from Malaya arrive. There are currently 3 major operations underway - the invasion of Noumea, the landings at Adak and Attu islands in the Aleutians, and the capture of Palembang. Noumea Noumea is the most interesting of these, as I made a raid on it in mid January and was greeted by a rather serious force of P-40s and other allied aircraft that managed to decimate the torpedo squadrons from Taiho and Shoho. The allies paid for it with several dozen fighters, but nevertheless, it was clear that capturing the island would not be all that easy. The current invasion force is due to arrive at Koumac in 3-4 days. I chose to land here as even though my forces have prepared for Noumea (50-70 points), it looks empty, and thus will minimize my looses upon landing. The current forces for the operation consist of the 16th and 24th IJA Infantry Regiments, the 25th IJA Ind. Engineer Regiment, and the 2nd IJA FA Regiment. The 33rd Division is preparing at Truk, and waiting for transport to be moved in if necessary, possibly in an amphibious move on Noumea itself. The invasion will be covered by all 6 of my CVs, arranged into 3 TFs of Akagi/Amagi, Soryu/Taiho, Koryu/Shoho. Each TF has a pair of CAs and a CLAA for escort, and 5 or 6 of my best DDs, which are fast becoming a scarce resource. Supporting these are BC Hiei tasked with supporting the landings themselves, and BB Nagato and Mutsu as a covering force. BB Harima was originally also included in this force, but upon reaching the staging point at Rabaul, her captain realised someone had forgotten to rearm the main batteries following her involvement in the bombardment of Rabaul a month earlier, and was ordered back to Truk. She will likely accompany the second second landing if it becomes necessary. Aleutians This barren part of the map has been very quiet, and probably with good reason. A bunch of frozen islands are hardly worth fighting over. Nevertheless, to push out my own borders slightly, I've moved to invade and build up two key islands here - Attu and Adak. The invasion forces are also 4-6 days out, and this coupled with the Noumea move will be likely to divide the allies attention. The only major units assigned here are one IJA Infantry Regiment, and the BBs Yamato and Musashi as escort. I do not expect resistance, but these two were sitting around in Kure doing nothing, and I do not wish to repeat a mistake I made in an earlier game when invading these islands. Palembang The troops landed today, and the place looks mostly undefended - it should fall easily and hopefully intact. The main issue about this operating is that it was cost me THREE top of the line DDs (two are still afloat and drifting towards Singapore - I have no illusions about them making it). The Dutch submarines are annoyingly effective. A week ago one sunk a large TK at Miri, prompting me to base a dedicated ASW TF there. A few days ago they put a torpedo into CVL Shokaku, on her way to cover this landing. This forced me to use Zeros out of Singapore, and put her into Saigons yard for a month. Thanks for the AAR. Both the mod and the course of campaign development seem quite insteresting. In historical scenarios you rarely see major battles with all classes of ships participating as early as December 1941. And the chain of battles off North Celebes seems to be a quite close call too, Allies just repeatedly happened to be bringing their reinforcements one day too late.

Well, the Noumea operation got interesting, to put it mildly. February 16th 1942 As far to the north the landings on Adak and Attu commenced, the Amagi group took up a position on the east side of New Caledonia, some 120nm off the coast and 200nm from Noumea. The other groups led by Soryu and Koryu moved on the other side of the island to some 200nm west of Noumea. At dawn the fun began. The morning saw viscious air strikes from Noumea against the Amagi group - this was exactly as planned, and the transports due to start unloading tommorow at Koumac will be undisturbed. The resulting air battles came out to something like 20 US fighters (all P-40Es) and another 20 US bombers (SB2U-3s and A-24s) shot down for the loss of 4 Zeros. In the afternoon, the western force which had also escaped the attention of the aircraft at Noumea, found what it was hoping to find - an allied CVTF to the south. The group led by Soryu reacted. The Koryu group did not, and was out of range to launch strikes. My strikes came in 4 waves - a coordinated mix of fighers, divebombers and torpedo bombers first, then a second wave of fighters and divebombers. And then two groups of unescorted torpedo bombers. -The first strike put 3 torpedoes into BB South Dakota and a 250kg bomb into CV Hornet. 1 Zero, 13 Kates, and 3 Vals were lost, and 19 and 14 Kates and Vals respectively damaged. -The second group scored a single 250kg bomb on South Dakota, and lost another 4 Vals with the remaining aircraft damaged. -The third group found the enemy cap weak with only 14 F4Fs in the air, but still lost 4 Kates before turning back. -The last group went for CV Lexington, and once again caught the allies with only 8 F4Fs up, and put two 250kg bombs which failed to penetrate into Lexington. The enemy strike against the Soryu was even more ineffective, but atleast it was coherent. The group of 14 F4Fs, 23 SBDs and 7 TBDs failed to hit anything, and lost 5 F4Fs and 1 SBD and TBD. The TBDs were flying at extended range as they were only carrying bombs. At the end of the 16th, the squadrons from Taiho had been butchered the worst, though Soryu s were in bad shape too, and I moved both CV groups to converge south of Noumea in case the allies decided to move further north. Meanwhile the Amagi group headed south to get involved.
