Yeah, you're right about the DDs. I'm scrounging more.

Here is Palembang. The 2 units just to the west of Palembang are tank regiments. Below that are a division, brigade, some artillery and 3 independent engineer regiments.

Do they shock attack when entering the palembang hex? If so, you might want to coordinate alle the units so they arrive in the hex at the same time.

Yes, unless the attack comes from the hex to the NW of Palembang. Guess where I'm coming from?

Excellent! Because I was just about to suggest that, hoping you would be patient enough for such an endeavor.

Such a move should also theoretically "isolate" Palembang from sending or receiving supplies to the rest of the island, correct? (With the exception of shipping by sea or by air obviously.)

Djordje -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 3:04:02 PM)

In my PBEM game I was also careful about attacking Palembang, and it proved to be just waste of my time. All I needed to do in the end was to invade over sea with one division and after first deliberate attack the base fell. No bombardment was needed, just simple invasion and attack day later.
Unless your opponent heavily reinforced it you should not be afraid of crossing river. Just go for the kill, you are already two months behind the schedule for it.

Palembang has been isolated by sea and air for months. Only the land route still exists, but not for long.

My concern over taking Palembang before Batavia and Singapore fell was Allied bombing of the oil fields. As I've said many times, I'm a conservative player. Whatever happens at Palembang, happens. If the oil fields are trashed, well, I guess that's the breaks. That's why I have 3 engineer regiments as part of the assault force. My intel says there are 5 units there. We'll see in a few days. I've actually had excellent luck taking industry relatively intact.

I will do what I can to influence the die roll and then let the die roll as it does.

Speaking of repairing damaged oil production...are you dumping beaucoup supply into Miri so that it can repair its 150 damaged oil production?

Yup, it hasn't missed a day of repair. It's down to ~30 damaged oil remaining. It is offloading the last shipment of supply needed to take care of the remaining damaged oil.

BrucePowers -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 4:33:52 PM)

What's the diffrence between beaucoup supply and supply?[:D] Is beaucoup supply prettier? Is it supplyier?[:D]

BrucePowers -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 4:34:28 PM)

Hi Mike![:)]

Mike Solli -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 4:37:22 PM)

Hi Bruce.  Beaucoup supply is French supply.  Very good for repairing oil wells. [:D]

Cribtop -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 6:18:06 PM)

In my anecdotal experience, when a base falls to shock attack the odds of significant or even total destruction of facilities increases. For this reason, I always deliberate attack against major Oil/resource/HI centers.

Mike Solli -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 6:21:38 PM)

That's good to know, Cribtop.  Shock attacks are rare occurances for me.  I prefer deliberate attacks.

Cribtop -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 6:26:10 PM)

As I say, anecdotal experience only but I notice a correlation and it makes sense in the real world.

Mike Solli -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 6:34:40 PM)

Now that I think about it, the one instance I shock attacked to take a base that had industry in this PBEM, it happened at Singapore.  That was the one base that was trashed when I took it.  Coincidence?  Don't know.  I'm not going to take a chance though.

Mynok -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 6:58:02 PM)

You'd best hope you don't take the base when you shock attack across the river.

I'm not going accross the river. I'm coming from this direction:

Cribtop -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 7:36:23 PM)

Mike, if you read my AAR, that's exactly what happened to me - I wanted Singapore asap so I shock attacked and took the base. That's the only base I've ever taken in AE that was 100% damaged. Since then I've made sure to administer the final blow via deliberate attack.

Mike Solli -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 7:42:59 PM)

I just found your AAR.  I'll start it tonight.  Any idea when you're going to be able to get it going again?

Cribtop -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 7:54:18 PM)

Sadly, as I just posted, I think it is over for good. I plan to start another asap, but it will probably take a week to put together a new first turn, then I'm traveling for a week for work.

My opponent is a great guy, but moved to a new continent for a new job and it looks like he is too swamped to continue.

Mike Solli -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 8:10:06 PM)

Yeah, I saw it.  I read about half the first page.  I like the way it's written.  There's got to be someone out there that's ready to start a game.

Cribtop -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/12/2010 8:13:36 PM)

Well not to spoil it, or spam your thread, but at least I got to end it with a good CV battle that was a solid victory. I have no doubt I'll get another opponent quickly.

Mike Solli -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/13/2010 3:39:53 AM)

15 Apr 42

Not a lot happened, but a lot of things are in motion. Over Magwe, Ted did better in the air. I lost a Tojo and 2 Oscars to his 1 Hurricane and 2 Warhawks. I do have a surprise for him tomorrow there. I pulled out the Oscar Sentai so it can replace aircraft. It was down to 20 planes. The Tojos are down to 2, but I left them in there for fun. They suck actually. I replaced that Oscar Sentai with a full strength Oscar Sentai (42 aircraft). In addition, I moved a Zero Daitai to Rangoon and had it LRCAP Magwe. If everything flies, there will be 42 Oscars and 20 Zeros (along with 2 Tojos [:D]) flying over Magwe. I should win the next battle.

Well, for the N Australian battle, I'm down 1 CA. I saw the 5 Dutch PTs sitting next to Baby KB [X(] and didn't want them to react to my carriers. I sent 4 CAs with 4 DDs into the hex to tie them up. Of course, they put a torpedo into Kumano. She's a tough old bird but she's out of this battle. Her damage is 9-17(13)-0-0. I sent her to Soerabaja escorted by a DD. Oh yeah, the PTs got away without a scratch.

Djordje -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/13/2010 4:32:24 PM)

What was the moonlight during the engagement with PTs? If it is lower than 50% I avoid them. Usually I conduct my operations to peek during full moon, to the point that my troops begin to feel their commander might be a werewolf...

Mike Solli -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/13/2010 4:50:39 PM)

Djordje, I never even look at % moonlight.  I need to.  I'll check it tonight.

Mynok -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/13/2010 6:32:31 PM)

Interesting.....where do you see what phase the moon will be in for the next turn?

You can't see the phase, but you see percentage. It changes 3-7% (or something close to that, didn't really watch that closely) each day, with full moon (100%) and pitch black (0%) lasting about 3 days, same as in RL. It takes 4 weeks to go complete circle, from 100% to 0% and back.

Set your Nell and Betty high experienced squadrons to night torpedo attack during full moon and if you are lucky your opponent might get some nasty surprises...

This is from my PBEM, I've seen many daylight engagements with worse visibility:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Jarvis Island at 164,148, Range 12,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
AMC Aikoku Maru

Allied Ships
AK Fomalhaut
AK Arcturus, Shell hits 1

Improved night sighting under 100% moonlight
Maximum visibility in Clear Conditions and 100% moonlight: 12,000 yards

CONTACT: Japanese lookouts spot Allied task force at 12,000 yards
CONTACT: Allied lookouts spot Japanese task force at 12,000 yards

Edit: Forgot to answer the question, you can see moonlight during orders phase on the top bar, to the right of the end turn button.

Mynok -> RE: Here we go again! tc464 (A) vs. Mike (J) - No tc464 (10/13/2010 8:50:27 PM)

Ahh.....thank you.
