Well, maybe not but I guess that many here know wargaming and were to get the games so I thought I ask. This is the General discussion forums isn't it?

JudgeDredd -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (11/7/2009 11:47:35 PM)

Yes it is King Karl. Forgive our over zealous General Discussion forum moderator.

AFAIK there is no way of receiving Digital Downloads of HPS games. I wish there were...I would own a few myself.

Russo-German War isn't an HPS game.

RGW is not available as a DL.

You can purchase that game from NWS. It is published by Schwerpunkt.

It is a GREAT game. Interface is rather odd, but other than that if you like operational wargames, it is not to be missed.

Check out threads at the Wargamer forum.

In particular, JMass's map mod is very much worth having a look at:

Schwerpunkt Games' new Middle East wargame looks awesome....too bad it isn't released yet.

Kung Karl -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (11/8/2009 7:15:42 PM)

What resolution does this game run at? I have a 1650*1080 widescreen monitor.

Also, will it work on Vista/Windows 7?

Hartford688 -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (11/8/2009 7:35:19 PM)

I run it on XP at 1680*1050. Looks good. Widescreen.

So, I take it that the game will run in any resolution or does it stretch to fit the screen?

Hartford688 -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (11/8/2009 8:50:39 PM)

Sorry, not a clue. A while since I installed it, and I can find no "video options" menu to see the selections.

All I can tell you is I'm running it 1680*1050, widescreen, no stretching.

If you like simple, clear, boardgame graphics, it looks great.

If you want World In Conflict or better, it sucks.

I like it a lot. But then I like WITP graphics. And I just finished, and thoroughly enjoyed a game of Warship Combat: Navies At War, where the graphics are not, shall we say, cutting edge.

But maybe I enjoyed that not because of the graphics, but because I pounded the Bismarck and Tirpitz into a fleeing scrapyard, and drove off the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau with their tail between their legs with the KGV, Nelson, Hood, Norfolk and Suffolk. Gosh but gaming can be great!

Jeffrey H. -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (11/8/2009 11:53:02 PM)

I wonder why they chose not to depict the 1944+ years ?

sabre1 -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (11/9/2009 1:41:08 AM)

Ron Dockal is the devleoper. He is a one man show. IIRC eventually Ron was going to cover the entire WWII European theatre after he finished his Middle East game.

The game map does take up the entire screen when you zoom in, and I find the map very nice IMHO for an operational game. The controls are odd and not intuitive, but they grow on you after awhile. The included tutorial for RGW is good. The manual is excellent. The AI is adequate at defense, and plenty good enough for me but that isn't saying too much.

I have no idea why he didn't cover 1944+, but he does respond to questions on the Wargamer forum from time to time, and is generally helpful and friendly.

There is a guy who is modding the Allied German War and doing WWI scnearios. I haven't played them, but they look nice.

The game deserves to be supported and it is an obvious labor of love by the developer.

Emilio -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (11/14/2009 11:57:36 AM)

The reason to do not include scenarios beyond Warsaw was the massive transfer from units located in the West front, that made difficult the task.

However, RGW has 51 scenarios, covering the most interesting battles and a grand campaing from Barbarrossa to Warsaw. Until now this is the best east front game that I've found despite its time. Additonal user made scenarios are available. My recomendation is Hitler moves to the East.

AGW covers the entire war in the West (Africa included). Itīs newer, with a new engine. Also the last east front battles from Warsaw to Berlin are included in AGW, so it is possible to play the last scenarios with allied and soviet forces.

MDE, Middle East will cover several scenarios, from 1947 to 2006, including an Israeli campaing, Iraq-Iran war, Gulf War 91, Cobra II and Afghanistan. Hopefully it will be released anytime soon.

WWII-Europe will be the next game, combining both RGW(II?) and AGW, with a newer and easier game interface.

Tankdoc -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (12/2/2009 4:42:31 AM)

My good friend and fellow wargamer developer David Heath emailed me that there was a thread on Schwerpunkt games on his forum. So here I am!

The posts on the thread are accurate, and I can only add status and a few more details. We are in development on Middle East 1948 - 2010 (MDE). We have completed Playtest 1 (focused on user interface) of three planned playtests. We have been delayed in our original plans based on having to do a lot more of research on the Iran - Iraq War scenarios. However, we have now met that challenge and are building the ten scenarios. The 9 battles involving Israel have already been built. Persian Gulf battle 1991 has been built. We are building the Cobra II 2003 battle. Map is ten miles per hex. Turn length is one day. Map covers from Alexandria to Western Afghanistan, and from southern Turkey to Saudi Arabia. The last battle to build is something we call Middle East 2010 (was 2006). It will contain the latest and most current order of battle for every country that is available in the public forum. We have no idea on how the market will react to an operational Middle East game since we have only released WWII games to-date, so I would appreciate your feedback.

Once we release MDE, then we plan to build the big one. WWII-Europe. We will combine the battles in AGW and RGW in one game, and use the MDE user interface.

The games have a paper manual (about 100 pages) based on customer discussions, so they are not downloadble. For each new game, we analyze whether we want to change the distribution method. We would appreciate your feedback on that also.

Let me know if you have other questions. And David, thanks for inviting me to your forum.

Ron Dockal

Welcome to the forum.

AGW comes with a very nice spiral bound manual on good paper. However, IMO, lots of potential (impulse) buyers would be content with a PDF and download. (Easier to sneak past the wife)

mgarnett -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (12/2/2009 6:12:38 AM)

I agree. Whilst I have purchased AGW only recently, I have known about the game for some time and would have purchased it earlier had it been available for download. Generally, postage and handling is a killer cost to Australia (not to mentioned the very long wait!). You might want to think about giving potential buyers a choice, much like Matrix already do, people can still order a physical copy with a bound manual, purchase a digital download only or purchase both. Purchasing a copy with a physical manual would cost a little more to cover the cost of the manual. Most publishers already do this, so I think it is a cost gamers would be willing to pay if they wanted the manual. I really can't see how you could lose out. The only affect would be increased exposure and thus, hopefully, increased sales.

You have a great product (well at least I think so) that is really one of those hidden gems, a very hidden gem. The game is of such a high quality that I think simple distribution and removing the barrier to purchase could only increase exposure for these ganes. IMHO, they certainly deserve more exposure.

Cheers

Mark

+1 mgarnett

I have both games, and they are not to be missed.

There is an AAR's over on the Wargamer forums, one by gwgardner who frequents Matrix.

sabre1 -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (12/2/2009 12:49:45 PM)

Mr. Dockal,

I like digital download, it feeds the NOW in me, but I generally do both DD, and physical copy. I love printed manuals.

Wider distribution of your game can only be a good thing.

Jeffrey H. -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (12/2/2009 7:34:33 PM)

Anybody running this one on Windows 7 ? In the FAQ they say it runs under Vista but I was wondering if anyone had direct experience with Win 7.

sabre1 -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (12/3/2009 12:42:58 AM)

Vista 64, haven't switched yet to 7.

Jeffrey H. -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (12/3/2009 2:54:49 AM)

Ordered it today, maybe I'll be the first to report on it.

Aurelian -> RE: Russo-German War '41-'44 as DD? (12/3/2009 4:12:03 AM)

Just loaded and ran it with Win 7 64 bit. Runs fine.

They should partner with Matrix and offer digital download. [:D]

Leave the boxed version with NWS and do the DD with Matrix. Like Lock and Load might be if...

+1 for DD here.

If DD were available I'd get RGW. It's an older title so I don't really want to spend P&H on it, but a DD option....instant sale.
