histgamer -> Silly AI (11/10/2009 6:51:44 AM)

Late December 1941 and the AI just sailed 3 fleet carriers past balkipan and into the sea between it and Java. Meanwhile two light carrier battle groups were also sailed into the area. I sacrificed the CA Houston, CL Boise, CL Marble head, CL something dutch, CL Tromp and 4 destroyers... Also in the area unfortunately were 5 tankers which all were lit up... In return 1 CVL sunk (Shuioho i cannot spell it) and Akagi and Soyrui on fire... that damage will hopefully even things up between the Japanese CVs and American CVs. [8D]

Is it typical for the AI Japanese to sally their Carriers well into the range of surface action groups without adequate surface protection? Especially when they have not gained any footholds on SEA Resource Area... Clark Field and Singapore are not even pressed heavily yet...

castor troy -> RE: Silly AI (11/10/2009 6:56:56 AM)

it was never different and it isnīt even that much different when you PBEM. Well, the difference is that in PBEM you have more heavy units protecting your carriers. What really makes it different (compared to WITP) is the fact that itīs now quite easy to do surface engagements.

morganbj -> RE: Silly AI (11/10/2009 2:12:08 PM)

Yeah.  In WITP I usually used my BB's almost exclusively for bombardment missions. In AE, I use them for surface action constantly.  One of them with a few escorts can do a damn damn on a weakly escorted enemy invasion TF.  And the Nipponese AI LOVES to send these suicide missions here and yonder endlessly.

But if the CVs survive, did you win by trading so many good ships for a CVL? Especially the auto-magical Boise?

FAdmiral -> RE: Silly AI (11/10/2009 4:56:04 PM)

I had the very same thing happen to me playing Allied vs. the Japanese AI.
The Japanese TF had 3 CVs & 4 DDs. Did a surface action with Prince of Wales,
Repluse, Houston & 12 CLs & DDs. I took damage but only lost 2 DDs. The AI
TF lost 1 CV and had a second badly damaged. Also saw smaller AI TFs with only
a CVL and DD. Did a hurt on them with only a 4 DD TF. Does the AI not use CAs,
CLs or BBs in its CV TFs anymore??? This is an error in the coding somehow.

Andy can make the AI somewhat unpredictable and sneaky..., but it's still dumber than a rock! [:D]

Yeah, they have a nice fleet, but it looks like the original PH attack fleet, so really not the AI I think...

But still gutsy on your part. One CA, one CL, USN banzi attack [:)]

More 'desperate' than gutsy. [:)] You're right, it's day five from their initial attack at Pearl. My first campaign game, so I didn't
know if they were ever going to leave. After they finally sank a carrier, I mustered everbody that was left for a 'last stand'.

freeboy -> RE: Silly AI (11/11/2009 4:10:25 PM)

whats with the stay at pearl harbor option ?

histgamer -> RE: Silly AI (11/11/2009 7:21:31 PM)

Japanese bombed my pearl for 3 days after the 7th... the 8th and 9th were responsible for crippling my BB fleet for good. [:(] 3 BB's in the ship yard they will be ready between 220-440 days. The other 3 BB's are so badly damaged I can't move them but they can't repair because the shipyard is overloaded...

Only the Oklahoma sank but 3 BB's will be out of the war until at least 1944 the way I see it...

*Also* Apparently the CVL didn't sink [:(] The Akagi did though [:D]

Is the Ship Sunk list always accurate? Or does that suffer from fog of war?

Anthropoid -> RE: Silly AI (11/11/2009 10:07:37 PM)

In my game against Japan AI using the scenario where Japan is "extra prepared" (Hakko Ichiu) it is Dec 9 or 10. As far as I know _ALL_ of my Battleships at Pearl were _SUNK_ with the exception of two maybe three!!

And that is only on "Hard" difficulty. I actually played turn 1 on Very Hard the first time, and when they sank about 15 ships on Dec 7 alone I rethought the _Very_ part and replayed it on _Hard_ only.

Your own list should be totally accurate, but enemy list can definitely suffer FoW. False negatives and positives on the list should get slowly corrected over time as "Intell pieces together" the stories . . .

Not even a little bit.
Oh, yeah. OpsReports are your friend. Months later you may find out what really happened.

geobaz -> RE: Silly AI (11/12/2009 3:04:07 AM)

I've also seen random (and incorrect) sinking reports of my own ships scroll by during a turn.

I've never seen an incorrect sinking itself, but the names are wrong so often I don't even notice much anymore. I think the USS Houston has been sunk about four times. (I play Allies.)
