I know that the computer selects one base force to be the main base force for each base, and that (assuming the needed units are in the pool) will eventually increase its aviation support devices when the airfield is expanded.

My questions: (1) if a second and third base force are sent there temporarily, so that no additional aviation support is actually needed when the airfield expands, does the main BF still grow? (2) If the newly enlarged BF is transported to a different base, does the computer assign a new main base force for the original base, and eventually expand it? (3) Does having been (or still being) the original base's main BF, does that transported unit have no chance of expanding at the new base? (4) Is there any way to know which BF has been made the main BF when there are several such units in a big base?

As you can figure out, I'd like (as the allies make their advances) to take enlarged BF's from what are now sleepy rear area bases and send them to newly seized bases.

Unless something changed between WitP and AE (and it very well could have), the automatic increase of BFs only applies to the AI.  It won't happen to a human player's forces.

Yeah, just the computer player.  Here's the rule:

16.5 BASE FORCE REPLACEMENTS
Base Forces also receive replacements just as any ground unit does, but their expected full
strength level for the computer player
can change during the game. Every friendly airfield with
at least one Base Force unit at the airfield will pick one Base Force to be its primary Base
Force. The primary Base Force will have its expected full strength value for aviation support
points change so that its expected value equals 30 times the current size of the airfield (never
greater than 250). This change in the expected value can cause replacement units to be built
even when losses have not been taken. This will provide sufficient aviation points to support
growing airfields.

That's not how I read the manual section 16.5 (p.262), Mike, but I could be wrong.

Oooops, my last msg went before you pointed out my mistake. Thanks for the clarification.

That's a very nice thing for the computer.  I can see why the dev's did that though ... amkes the AI much more manageable.
