Last night - (mar 27, 1942) the Japanese had *4* separate 'raider' fleets invade my bases at:

Noumeau
Canton Island
Pearl
Suva

All 4 consisted of 2dd's and a CA or 2 (one battleship, at Pearl).

Though I took some damage, all 4 bases had large surface action groups at the base hex, and made short work of them. At the end of the turn, the Japanese had lost 8 ships, and 6 more heavy damage/on fire. For the gain of a damaged battleship, and 2 sunk destroyers.

Are these suicide raids going to be fixed in the patch? I restarted the game *without* ai files 08-015 - so I am just using the 'stock' ai patched 01-07. Was this the kind of thing that happened in Stock as well?

I don't know if it can be done in this patch, but some of the suicidal aggressivenes of the IJN has got to be toned down.

And the AI both IJN and USN MUST keep their CV's and CVL's together or the fun will go out of the game.

I know "play pbem[8|] but I was happy for years playing WITP ai[:)], I just want to continue with AE

Yeah, I agree, and while I like the new unpredictability of the AI -- and it is aggressive -- I shake my head at times. I've had fleets of AI AKs and APs loaded to the rails with Nippon soliders with NO escort lead major incursions into allied territory. In my current game, I still hold Palembang, and all of Java, but there are multiple Jap invasion fleets cruising the Indian ocean well out of range of any major Japanese fleet units or LBA. Something for the weaker Brit CVs to do I guess, sink them with their stringbags.

It sure spoils the game. It's not the fact that it's over aggressive, it's dimb over agressive. If it was to form proper TFs and then come at you fine, but it doesn't. I've never looked at any of the code, script or whatever it's called in WitP or AE so I don't know how the AI works but I'm sure some code etc could be created to prevent it form suicidal missions. Kamikazi excluded of cause.

i am hoping that either:

a> the ai will only send these roving patrols to enemy base hexes if they have sufficient air cover (land or carrier based) if the enemy has a/c at the base

or

b> only if they first do a recon run and determine what they will be facing in the hex.

c> only if the TF is made up of a certain composition (maybe done by ship type, or victory points, whatever) - ideally these 'raider groups' would have a carrier tf following a surf action tf, with at least a couple of heavy cruisers (or battleships) and 2 or 3 destroyers in it.

Even this one might be better than the current situation:

d> a 'cheat' where the ai is allowed a glimpse of *only* the ships and A/C of enemy controlled bases to determine if a 'raid' is going to end in disaster. Should NOT be allowed to see ground strength, fortification, etc, as that would enable it to beef up invasion stacks.
