KG Erwin -> The Best War Documentary Ever? (11/19/2009 12:41:12 AM)

Arguable, but "With the Marines at Tarawa" was shown is US movie theaters in 1944, and it helped bring home the true cost of "The Good War". Filmed entirely by USMC combat cameramen, it's remarkable it that it shows a short sequence in which you can see both the Japanese and US Marines in the same frames. Most of it is in color. It is also the first-known film of WWII which shows US dead. By orders of President Roosevelt, this segment was not censored.

It is available for viewing/download here: http://www.archive.org/details/WiththeMarinesatTarawa

Very good indeed, thanks Erwin.

"...It is also the first-known film of WWII which shows US dead. By orders of President Roosevelt, this segment was not censored. "

That must've been a shock for the audience.

Indeed it was, and during 1944 enlistments for the Marines suddenly plummeted.

I love that documentary. Especially the scene at 8:40 when a team of Japanese soldiers makes a dash to another position.
