Agua -> Was carrier TF aggression tweaked upwards? (6/24/2002 12:06:53 AM)

I installed v.1.11 Saturday night and have played about four or five scenarios since then. I played as Allied. In four of those game sessions, with "react to enemy" enabled, when an IJN carrier group is spotted and my task force is with 15 hexes or so (estimating here), my carrier group will go waaaaaaaaay the hell off its designated path and close with the enemy TF to within 2-5 hexes, riding straight into heavily controlled areas of the western Solomon Sea ("Coral Sea" and "Operation MO" scenarios). Of course, the result is pretty predictable with tons of short range enemy escort for their level bombers and diver bombers.

Was this an intentional tweak, a bug, or just a phenomoneal string of anomolous events?

Hi

Check the TF commander. If agressive they can ad to this leap.

Thanks for the reply. I'm aware that the commander determines aggression, within limits. I changed no commanders from whatever is provided in default and have played these scenarios many times previously, same conditions, without these events occurring. If this is a commander determined phenomenon, then either UV places command of carrier groups randomly and I just happened to draw the same bonehead (or a similarly boneheaded commander) four of five times (because it never happened previously in about three weeks' worth of play), or if the default carrier task forces in scenarios "Coral Sea" and "Operation MO" utilize default commanders, the identity of which has unchanged since the initial release, then this commander is one reckless SOB.

[edit follows:] Commander in "Coral Sea" and "Operation MO" of the setup taskforce (Yorktown/Lexington) is Cpt. "F. Sherman" with a leadership rating of 65 and inspiration rating of 69. I haven't checked on the TF which become available later in "Operation MO". Is this guy a well known hothead or something?

Hi

I know how frustrated you must be because this has happened to me too. I quickly learned to set them on Do Not React and use the React function in extreme situations where the CV will not venture into enemy air zones. Use this function from now on because most of the time there is no need to hurry with some planning involved. BTW: If there is a good non-agressive commander I ALWAYS use them even if the agressive has better values.

Okay. Thanks for clearing this up. I'm just curious as to why this didn't occur for three weeks and then four out of five times since installing the 1.11 patch.
