Mickrocks201 -> Refueling subs at sea (11/25/2009 4:20:41 AM)

Is it possible to refuel an out of gas sub at sea? I sent one back to SF due to its withdrawal but it ran out of fuel 6 hexes short of PH. I sent all kinds of task forces to it to try to refuel (even a AO in a replenishment TF) but the sub screen (in human control) does not allow a refuel to occur - nor does the meet task force routing allow the refuel option to be checked. Seems like the sub is just stuck - and I am losing PP's for not withdrawing it.

Nope

Send another Sub, then put them in the same TF, then head for home.

That didn't work for me either. I had a flotilla of S-boats I sent out of fuel range to mine (before I understood how bad it is to run out of fuel, even on Cruise.) I merged a fully-loaded Gato with them to buy some time and no fuel ever transferred, either automatically or due to orders. I lost six S-boats.

In a pinch a sub could refuel another at sea, in theory. In practice I doubt any carried fuel hoses. The only place to stow them would be the line lockers, and they were full of mooring lines. (Not to mention bits of fuel leaking out from the hoses/lockers and making a nice slick in calm water. Most boats left their anchors and chain with the tender for similar reasons. Don't have anything that can give you away stowed outside the pressure hull.)
