FM_Freyland -> Tell me if this is true... (6/24/2002 10:41:26 PM)

I am trying to play the Coral Sea scenario.

Does your first turn take forever? It seems I spend 10 minutes alone just making sub patrols from Brisbane.

Sorry if this next one is dumb... on the TF screens, at the beginning of the game, I noticed that the various TF's have a red fuel number. IIRC, in the manual that means low fuel, right? Why, for our first turn of the game, do we have to tell our TF's to refuel?

Sorry, I am just getting frustrated. This game has incredible potential, but I seem incapable of getting over the learning curve for some reason.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

A good way to decrease micro-management at the beginning is to put your subs on computer control.

Gabby -> Red Fuel Number (6/24/2002 10:49:56 PM)

TF's that do not have destination show up as red, because effectively using infanity as a range distance.

Once you assign a destination, the number will turn green if the destination is in range.

Here is an extract of the 1.11 read-me

"If the value is green, it means that the task force commander feels he will have enough fuel to go to the assigned location at normal speed and return. If there is no assigned location, the value may be written in red, as he has no idea where he is going."

Since your TFs do not know where to go, the fuel level is red. BTW, the manual is probalby talking about the endurance level and not the fuel level.

Yes, the first turn does normally take a long time. There is an awful lot to do, with almost nothing pre-set (i.e. convoys, Air TF's, etc). And what is pre-set (AG settings) you'll probably want to check and adjust, anyway.

However, it has been my experience that things speed up significantly as the turns progress. There is just less to do on any given turn: check on progress of TFs, adjust air settings, etc. But, for the most part, a lot of things can be left as they are for a few turns at a time, until the operational situation forces a change.

Just keep plugging away at it. The learning curve is steep, but there's a lot of good game play in there.

mogami -> First Turns (6/24/2002 11:32:51 PM)

Hi, On first turns you are most likely going to vist every base just to check what you have. While your there you can set the TF's and airgroups and then you'll know exactly what they are up to.
The requires a commitment of time and the first turn in any scenario will be the long one for quite awhile (then comes the turn you start setting up an invasion)
After turn 1 you just adjust for weather or combat from the prior turn. Many bases you will not need to do anything at so this will speed things up. For a long while no matter what side you will only have subs/1 or 2 Transport TF/and 1 or 2 CV/surface TF plus airgroups to check each turn. The subs only need to be checked when you see they have engaged or if they have been out for a while. (if set to computer control after you pick mission and location they will return themselves when fuel is low)

For PBEM games where you are going to be Japan in more then one PBEM. Make all your orders and then save game without ending turn. Name it 1st turn Now you have a first turn for every PBEM game in that scenario already done when you start a new game load the turn end turn and save into a new slot

Thank you all for your assistance... I will keep plugging at it, I think I just needed a 'bone' for my efforts to make it feel worthwhile.

Mojo, indeed I am Freyland of the Force Majeure Clan. Greetings to you.

Thought I recognised you as another refugee from Kahldun.

I think you'll find that folks here are helpful.

10 minutes! That's nothing. You should see how long I've been waiting for my first PBEM turn. ;)

Okay, SmartA$$, your Day will come!..... someday. :p

Thanks Mojo. Is this "Mojo les Q", or a different Mojo that really I should recognize?
