Egg_Shen -> Strongest Main Gun? (6/25/2002 2:54:59 AM)

does anyone know what the strongest main gun in the game is?

:cool:

I think the late 1940's Patton tank in the game has a pen value of over 250 with APCR ammo.
Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Hands down 16 Inch navel guns.

I have been playing a campaign and lately I have been shocked to see the m4a3 75mm knock out stugs left and right. I have even seen a few Panthers and Jagdpanthers die. But is far from the most powerful. but if we are talking about arty, Viking has been showing what can happen to you if you are on the wrong end of an eight inch battery.

The 75mm gun of the Panther is good. Has excellent penetration, and a good rate of fire. The 88mm gun of the King Tiger and some others is awesome also. The US 90mm too. British 17#er. Soviet 122mm. 105mm gun on the US T95 TD. The 128mm gun on the Jagdtiger.

Goblin- A Goblin admires power;)

Hands down it is the 105 on the T95 TD. But it is a gun belonging to a different era. Comparing it to WWII weapons is like comparing a 75L70 with a prewar 37mm.
thanks, John.

The 20 pounder gun on the Centurion Mk. 3 is incredibly powerful also. But as previously mentioned it more properly belongs to a different era (Arab-Israeli wars etc...). As far as WWII guns go, for Axis I vote for the long 88 of the King Tiger, Jagdpanther, Nashorn, and Elefant (the 128mm is bigger but not enough better to warrant the extra room it takes and the slower ROF). For allied guns I like the U.S. 90mm, the Brit 17-pounder, and the Soviet 122mm. Pure penetration power isn't the whole story though, you've got to look at the complete package! Mobility and protection are just as important as a big stinger IMHO :D

Well.... what do you mean by "strong".... muzzle velocity... the caliber of the round it takes.... the weight of the round it takes.... the penetration of the round..... all of these factors will affect the performance of a gun... as well as the environment (sorry if this sounds like a lesson)

Also... a reminder that the best of guns are worthless if they miss the target.....

Its also nice to have more than one or two shots each turn. For that reason I like the 7.5cm L70 overall. :cool:

Also the purpose of a gun is an important factor. Armour penetration is one factor, but for a heavy breakthrough tank like the IS-2 the HE ability is normally far more important. That's why they gave it 18 HE rounds and only 10 AP (and I heard they even tended to use up a bigger proportion of the HE shells).

The 75L70 is excellent for shooting tanks, but it's just not an infantry killer.

I like the 122mm D-25T.

yes 75mmL70 HE feels like a 37 HE
