Same here Eagle Four, thanks for the advice on being able to zoom the map out further. Anybody here, who was not a beta tester, won the Approaching Caen scenario yet? I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall with this one.

Here is a way to zoom more out :

open the file 'defaultsets.cfg' in the folder /Officers/bin with an editor.

change the value 'set cam.max_height' to '1000.000000'

and save.Thats it.

Thank you Eagle Four, that bit of advice has really helped my enjoyment of the game! I needed a farther zoom out desperately, and your instructions made it easy even for this computer illiterate. Thanks [;)] I would even like it further, but this helps immensely.

Just a guess here, vonRocko, but if '1000.000000' worked, then changing it to something larger should work, too. Maybe try '10000.000000'.

But are you having fun at least?

Also a question about game play: Do you always need to be fighting in multiple places on the map at once, or is it possible to work on one area at a time, gradually expanding the fighting?

Does the AI cheat, or are the attacks to your flanks and supply lines plausible from basic intelligence and recon?

I guess it might be at its' limits,I tried another 0 and it didn't change. But it is OK were it is now. Thanks.
As far as gameplay, it does keep you busy at multiple points, but there are lulls that will give you a chance to reorganize. The AI launches counterattacks very effectively,it appears to do recon and chooses your weak points [:D] but the attacks are logical and do not appear out of thin air. You can keep rear areas clear and estimate where attacks might come from. All this time you need to advance also, which for me is taking some time,it seems when I get get my attack force finally repaired, the krauts start trouble somewhere delaying my attack. But that is fun,it is a tough attack and I play on easy! With limited rienforcements, you need to repair your equipment and value your units, especially those Shermans!
I like the game, and I think I am a tough costumer to please.[:)]

Ok.  I give up.  The peer pressure has overcome my fear of this game.  Plus supporting Matrix Games isn't a bad thing either.  My order has been placed.  Waiting for the download to finish and the workday to end so I can start playing.

Just go for it, Slick Wilhelm.

Qwixt -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/14/2009 8:02:07 PM)

The only thing I can say is that I was not prepared for the size of the mission maps, nor the number of objectives. It seems a bit like work to me. I like to complete and take all objectives, and it's going to take hours of repetitive attacking to do that on these maps. As far as attacking in multiple spots at once, I don't have the mind for it since I focus on one task at a time. I normally take one objective at a time, not sure if this will hold up later, since I am only on the first mission still.

Alan Sharif -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/15/2009 8:35:06 AM)

Hi Slick William,

I am having fun but am switching to 'easy mode' from scenario 2 until I learn how to win.
I do not believe the AI cheats. He, She or It ,is just a very good player:) Also, your forces seem very limited for the task ahead of them.

Eagle_Four -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/15/2009 1:25:58 PM)

Hi all,

vonRocko is right.
Regarding the zoom out, there is a limit and the value '1000' is a stable Value and it works fine for me,maybe other can go up a little more. Here is a testing field.

SlickWilhelm -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/15/2009 2:34:49 PM)

Ugh, I'm still sitting on the fence. I just can't seem to make up my mind. My hatred of RTS games and their bazillions of units always stops me from pulling the trigger. On the other hand, it does sound like some tactical fun.

Demo, please!

Alan Sharif -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/15/2009 4:03:12 PM)

I am now playing the Approaching Caen scenario on easy and moving slowly and cautiously, trying to keep losses down. So far so good, only major mistake made was blundering into a major serirs of minefields. This is the way to go if you find this scenario too tough.

I bought it because it sounded like tactical fun too, but it's too much for me.

Here is a link for an old demo that can give some sort of idea how big the map is:

Alan Sharif -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/16/2009 9:09:27 AM)

The maps are large but you only use a part of them at any one time, well, for combat anyway. I find running two seperate offensives results in neither suceeding. Give it another go Qwixt, this is a great game.

Stilletto -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/16/2009 9:02:07 PM)

Finished the tutorial and I think I'm going to like it. I will start a full mission tonight and see what happens. If only I hadn't bought that Baldur's Gate pack yesterday. Nothing like an old RPG to completely make time fly.

Alan Sharif -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/17/2009 8:18:52 AM)

My Approaching Caen scenario has seen three German stratigic points fall giving a total of four held so far. I have learned you have to play this scenario slower and approach it more tactically than the first. Still having terrific fun with this title and looking forward to playing the next scenario. Sadly, do not have much time to do this for the next couple of days.

Alan Sharif -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/19/2009 2:33:14 PM)

Second scenario completed and I now now a 1st Lt.  Starting the third scenario, but keeping the game on 'easy'. I am still enjoying this game a great deal, much more than I expected it must be said.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/20/2009 8:45:06 AM)

Bought it, downloaded it (twice!). Matrix never did respond to my technical support request after the first dl failed - two weeks ago!!! Installed it. Ran it. Realised that it's just another pile of RTS junk with no realism whatsoever IMO. Uninstalled it. Decided to head over to Battlefront for my games in future after 10 years as a loyal Matrix customer.

Could you please be more specific as to what you didn't like about it? It might help those of us sitting on the fence decide to buy it(or not). Was there anything about it that you did like?

Redmarkus5 -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (12/29/2009 9:36:57 PM)

Hi.  The graphics were OK, but I am a wargamer who likes a reasonable degree of historical accuracy and genuine tactical techniques.  Games I own and enjoy range from Combat Mission (all thru to Shock Force) Panzer Elite (the orignal - still playing it), etc.  This title seems completely unreal to me.  The enemy units just keep pouring out of their bunkers into the trenches about the beach like robots.  My tanks have an effective range of about 100m as far as I can judge.  The whole thing feels like a clickfest - even my old Close Combat games (which were great when new, but lacking a lot today) play more realistically than this, in my opinion.

RTS is fine for those that like it.  I'm just tired of being told that I'm buying a realistic and 'tactical' representation of WW2 when clearly that's not what is on offer.  Isn't that what the marketing said?  I haven't gone back to re-read it before posting...

Qwixt -> RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here (1/5/2010 8:47:54 PM)

It is a clickfest, and the large nature of the maps makes it even worse. It's extremely repetitive. Assault objective #10 with the same tactics you used the previous 9 times, move on to objective #11,...

Either everyone agrees or nobody is even visiting this forum anymore.  Bad sign either way

I decided to spend my money on a sure thing....Gary Grigsby's War Between the States.

Officer's looked interesting, but was a bit too much RTS for me.

I wish I took that route instead of wasting money on this turkey of a game.
