i downloaded the game this afternoon. 3 times i have run full campaign as Allies and historical 1st jap turn. game never finishes out the jap attack. i get a black screen and then a dialog box that says program has stopped running. I am running windows vista home premium 64 bit. after first 2 crashes went to shorcut and put xp service pack 2 as run in compatibilty mode and ran program as administrator

Are you still having a problem or did it work after running as Admin?

Go to the shortcut for the game and edit the command line to add

-cpu1

at the end, outside the quotes.  You may be having a problem with multiple processor cores.  (I'm assuming this is a dual core or more machine?)

not sure where to perform this change? where is the command line located?

Navigate the Start menu to find the link to start the game.
Right click with the mouse on that link.
A menu will pop up, select, Properties from the bottom of that menu.
In the Shortcut portion of the window that pops up there will be an item labeled Target.
There will be something in quotes, which is the location of the executable for the game.
At the end of the line, outside the quotes, add
-cpu1

with a space between the closing quote and the dash.

This forces the game to use only one processor and has been known to fix some problems seen on multiprocessor systems.

If you wanted to use some of the other switches available, you would add them to the command line with spaces between the elements.  Some common one are
-w
for windowed mode (the game runs in a window instead of taking up the whole screen)

-altFont
uses a different font that some people find easier to read

There are quite a few of these switches in total.  I believe the list is in the manual.
