m10bob -> Indispensable book for this theatre (12/3/2009 7:10:10 PM)

South Pacific Destroyer written by Russell S.Crenshaw Jr is a detailed account of not just the ship he served on during the Solomons campaign(The Maury), but gives great accounts of other naval actions and events during 1942-'43 in that area.
PT boats really did attack Japanse destroyers, and it was not a rare event in that campaign, and a PT sunk I-3.
The frustrations of the Allied navies in the early days of that campaign are high-lighted and the book also shows how the introduction of SG RADAR negated many of the Japanese surface combat advantages.

The book also gives a guided tour throughout the American DD Maury, and describes the function of every shipboard department and crew position.

Just a fascinating read for this old dogface.
The book is published by Naval Institute Press ISBN 978-159114143-3

Terminus -> RE: Indispensable book for this theatre (12/3/2009 7:35:19 PM)

Isn't it "BUT if you try sometime you find"...?

BaitBoy -> RE: Indispensable book for this theatre (12/3/2009 8:22:31 PM)

The hardcover costs over $100.00 new on Amazon [sm=scared0008.gif]

Does any one know why? Does it come with a pice of the destroyer?

Terminus -> RE: Indispensable book for this theatre (12/3/2009 8:36:46 PM)

Yikes! $14 on B&N.

pompack -> RE: Indispensable book for this theatre (12/3/2009 8:44:45 PM)

Better make sure you're getting the right book. A "navel" destroyer might not be what you're looking for...[:D]

I got it from Amazon for $18 cheap!

If you buy a lot of books from Naval Institue press , it might be worth becoming a member, as that gives you a 20% + discount. And their Magazine Proceedings , is excellent if you are at all interested in current Naval affairs. They also pu out Naval History magazine.

Proceedings is only one small step up from the Navy Times. The Navy Times has come to be known as the Navy Inquirer.

Just put on reserve at the library - free!

Lrfss -> RE: Indispensable book for this theatre (12/4/2009 8:57:00 AM)

Here's another great read:

"Fire in the Sky", the air war in the south pacific ISBN 0-8133-3869-7. This book will put you in the proper perspective big time for WITP, AE, UV and all that good stuff!

Later,

Lrfss

Two of the best books that I have read are those by Eric Bergerud; one is the 'Fire in the Sky' mentioned above - the other, 'Touched with Fire, covers the same area (SW Pacific) but deals with ground forces. One of the genuine pleasures is that he covers all nationalities (US, Aust, NZ, Jap) with equal intensity and balance.

just picked up fire in the sky and touched by fire at my local library

Concur entirely. Both books are great. Just finished re-reading _Touched with Fire_. One of the best features is the interviews with actual veterans of the various Allied units; I wish he'd been able to do similar interviews with Japanese veterans.

Now he needs to do one about the naval war to finish the trilogy. :)

Pascal_slith -> RE: Indispensable book for this theatre (12/6/2009 4:48:44 AM)

A pair of the best on naval aviation are "First Team" and "First Team at Guadalcanal" both by John Lundstrom. His book "Black Shoe Carrier Admiral" is also excellent on the carrier actions of 1942.

Graymane -> RE: Indispensable book for this theatre (12/8/2009 7:06:45 PM)

wish he would do a book on the naval war as well. Fire Down Below? [:)]
