Donīt you have to withdraw Victorious soon again? IIRC I had her coming in, looked at the upgrade and noticed that I wonīt be able to use her for a longer operation as she has to be withdrawn soon after the upgrade was done. Iīm in March 44 now and had another Brit CV (or was it Victorious again?) arrive to undergo the 75 day upgrade but this time the carrier will stay in the Pacific, so I decided it would be worth it as this ship then fields quite some Corsairs.

Speedysteve -> RE: 1-8th March 1943 (1/13/2011 9:55:17 PM)

Yup she'll have about 6 weeks of service before withdrawal. I aim to use her in one opp before moving her to Sydney for Churchill....

Speedysteve -> 9-16th March 1943 (1/31/2011 8:16:51 AM)

Hi all,

The game slowly moves on.....the main focus has been around Marcus Island and it's capture. All quiet in Australia (except bombing of Port Hedland to keep it closed for now) and CBI.

--------------------

CentPac -

Troops went ashore on the 10th March. They initially met heavy fire and many of the tanks of 640th Tank Destroyer Bn floundered before getting ashore. 2 days were then spent gathering strength and supplies. An all out assault was launched on 13th March and overwhelmed the 61st Infantry Group which suffered over 5000 casualties to 237 American.

The only other Japanese interference in this whole operation has been by a plethora of submarines. A reported 3-4 have been sunk by the heavy Allied escort presence. However, the 15th March saw a major success for the Japanese. SS I-37 patrolling SW off Marcus Island located my CV force and fired 6 torpedoes at Wasp! 2 hit home, the 2nd of which detonated many bombs in the belly of the ship which quickly left the ship settling deep by the bow. Efforts were made but she slipped beneath the waves 2 hours later [:(]

My CV's had deviated from Marcus on the 13th to scout for enemy ships NW of Marcus Island. Scouts located 2 convoys and a reported 15 enemy Freighters and small escorts were sunk NE of Iwo Jima.

For now we remain on station as the remaining supplies are unloaded. The troops will then be embarked and all ships will head back to PH.

----------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

6 Misses/Duds.

On the 10th SS Wahoo sank AK Kisaragi Maru with 2 torpedoes north of Okinawa.

SS Sawfish blew up PB Busho Maru with 2 torpedoes near Chichi-Jima on the 11th.

SS Silversides obliterated AK Tyuwa Maru with 3 torpedoes near Aogashima.

SS Nautilus claimed PB Choyo Maru #2 sunk off Toyohaera on the 15th.

SS Kingfish heavily damaged AO Nippon Maru east of Balikpapan on the 16th.

Speedysteve -> 17-25th March 1943 (2/9/2011 6:46:53 PM)

Hi all,

Fairly quiet in most theatres with status quo in CBI. In Aus my northern Aus forces are just about reaching railheads where they can move to eastern Aus for a month or so of R&R. A Japanese supply convoy was attacked off Port Hedland by SBD/TBF's from Exmouth on 19th March.. Only 1 of 7 reported AK's survived limping off with heavy damage.

Other than a string of sub successes the only other action to note was the interception of a small Japanese supply convoy off Noumea by 6 x Allied DD which netted 4 x AK and a PB damaged.

At Marcus Island. All invasion troops are now re-embarked and are heading back to PH under the cover of my CV's before a period of rest and reinforcment before the biggest invasion of the war! Target undecided but has to be in the Mariana's or Bonin's etc.

------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

A relatively successful period. 4 missed/dud attacks.

SS Triton started off the period by sinking TK Kyoie Maru with 2 torpedoes off Ishigaki.

SS Kingfish had an active time reportedly sinking the Kagero Class DD Maikaze off Balikpapan.

SS Blackfish blew up PB Eifuku Maru off Madjene.

SS Hake heavily damaged AK Chile Maru near Okinawa.

SS Salmon sank AK Nitimei Maru with 2 torpedoes off Kushiro.

SS Grenadier sank AK Ada Maru off Hamamatsu.

SS Kingfish sank PB Kohuku Maru off Balikpapan 3 days after sinking Maikaze.

SS Seadragon sank AK Hokutatsu Maru with 2 torpedoes off Lingayen on the 23rd.

SS KIX tracked down SS I-153 (damaged 3 days earlier by KV's off Columbo) and put her under for good with 2 torpedo hits south of Trincomalee!

Quite an 8 day period!

Interesting?!? This one? You must mean a different game?[:'(]

Mynok -> RE: 17-25th March 1943 (2/9/2011 9:50:01 PM)

The penguin still roams.....he must be quite busy.

Speedysteve -> 26-31st March 1943 (2/17/2011 12:32:06 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Mynok - Don't see Faber on here often nowadays but will still chug out turns...I'm looking forward to using my new Hellcats soon [:)]

------------------------------------

General update -

The Sitzkreig ensues with all quiet in CBI and Australia (forces still heading to the east coast from North/Central Australia.)

Marcus Island forces are east of Wake Island heading towards PH. When they reach there quite a few ships (CV/BB) will head back to WC for upgrades (CV) and major overhauls (BB). The damaged CV Yorktown is still in PH repairing - ETA 200 days.

I'm conducting recon by PB4Y from Marcus Island on the Bonin's and Mariana's to decide which target to prepare for.

It will realistically be at least 3 or so months before I go ahead with this invasion as forces prepare, Hellcats and new Essex Class CV's arrive in theatre.

In the meantime I may conduct raids with my active CV's and I'll be launching other offensvies in SoPac/Australia in the next few months as well.

------------------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

6 dud/missed attacks.

SS Runner reported sinking a key ship the small TK Fujisan Maru with a torpedo south of Mindanao on the 26th.

SS Blackfish reported sinking the oil laden AK Kano Maru with 2 torpedoes south of Jolo.

SS Gar blew up the small SC CHa-3 off Wakkanai.

On the other side SS I-176 moderately damaged the empty AP Tilawa with a torpedo near Carnarvon. She's safely in port now repairing.

SS RO-34 broke DD Carmick in two SE of Attu Island.

SS I-156 did well in blowing up the fuel laden TK Norfold in 2 attacks NW of Columbo.

Speedysteve -> End of March 1943......... (2/17/2011 1:44:28 PM)

Speedysteve -> CV Air unit resize? (2/19/2011 10:39:38 AM)

Hi all,

How on earth do I get the VB units on my CV's to resize? I've withdrawn the VS sqn off Yorktown in this instance (she's repairing at PH) and clicked on the re-size text at the top left and entered a size of 36 in the VB sqn. I've tried this for 3 turns in a row but it never resizes?[&:]

castor troy -> RE: CV Air unit resize? (2/19/2011 2:28:58 PM)

thereīs probably no command HQ in range? My squadrons resize just fine when an appropriate HQ is in range.

Disband the TV containing the CV. Or if it's in port, form a TF, then disband. The max size should then be updated. You will then have to add planes/pilots.

witpqs -> RE: CV Air unit resize? (2/19/2011 3:38:03 PM)

If those things don't work there are additional methods, just query if you need them.

Speedysteve -> 1-4th April 1943 (2/21/2011 7:59:51 AM)

Hi all,

Thanks guys. As Yorktown is repairing damage in PH Shipyards I can't form and disband. I'll try it on my other CV's when they arrive back in 3 days time. I'll keep you posted!

------------------------------

Pretty quiet few days. As mentioned most of my Marcus Island invasions ships will be back at PH within the week. As forces prepare for my next invasion (the biggest of the war so far) and ships upgrade I'll probably use my CV's for a bit of raiding.

I'll also start to prepare for SoPac invasions soon.

------------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

3 Dud/misses.

SS Seal started the month off with a bang blowing up SC CHa-27 off Donggala.

SS Salmon followed up on the same day by damaging the troop laden AK Syunko Maru with a torpedo off Onimato.

On the 4th SS Barb left the fuel laden TK Toa Maru badly burning with a torpedo hit off Ambon.

An enemy sub (SS I-171) was detected and hunted to death by an ASW force operating off Wake Island.

-------------------------------

Time to start an overview for you all......Burma.....all quiet and will be until late 43.

witpqs -> RE: 1-4th April 1943 (2/21/2011 5:33:40 PM)

Speedy,

There's a bug which is to be fixed in Patch 6 (might be fixed in the Beta but I'm not running it). Check to see how many planes are currently on the carrier, including planes in reserve in the squadrons. I'm going to paraphrase what the game engine does here to explain the bug. The code looks at the capacity of the carrier. Then it adds up the number of planes on the carrier. Then, to see if there is room for the squadron to resize, it a) subtracts the number of planes in that squadron from the total and adds in the requested size of the squadron. It uses that figure to compare to the carrier capacity. The bug is that it neglects to subtract planes that are in reserve for that squadron (or maybe for all squadrons - don't know).

So if a squadron went wacky and auto-resized from 36 to 18, and would put the extra 18 planes in reserve. If you gave it orders to resize to 36, the code would be - in effect - double counting those 18 reserve planes and mistakenly concluding that the requested resize would exceed the capacity of the carrier.

To fix the problem, Michael had me put one squadron ashore so there were fewer planes on the carrier. Then the manual resize orders worked for the group still on the carrier. I am assuming that you know how to issue the manual resize orders. If you don't I'll walk you through that.

Speedysteve -> RE: 1-4th April 1943 (2/21/2011 5:39:14 PM)

Head....still....hurting after reading that. I'll let you know how it works out. At the mo all VB groups re-sized to size 36. At present I've added 12 planes to them (max I could do in 1 day) to give the groups 30

Speedysteve -> 5-12th April 1943 (2/28/2011 8:38:03 AM)

Hi all,

Other than Japanese bombing in China the only action to note was by submarines........All Marcus Island forces are now back in port or on land at Pearl Harbour. The next step is to decide where to prepare to invade next in CentPac. Recon indicates the main Mariana Islands and Bonin's all have between 15,000-40,000 Japanese soldiers. I was thinking of Pagan but it is a smaller Island so has limits IIRC. Maybe Saipan, Tinian or Guam then.......

-------------------------------------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

9 Dud/missed attacks.

SS Steelhead started the week off well by heavily damaging AKE Nagato Maru with a torpedo sout of Iwo Jima. SS Herring later detected the same ship and sank it with another torpedo.

SS Salmon heavily damaged AK Hokkai Maru with a torpedo off Sendai.

SS KIX performed well in sinking AK Daigen Maru with 2 torpedoes over 2 attacks near Langkawi.

SS Jack reportedly sank DD Asagumo with a torpedo west of Singapore.

SS Triton sank AK Meisho Maru with 2 torpedoes SW of Iwo Jima.

SS Perch got the prize of the week reportedly sinking the fuel laden beast TK San Ramon Maru with 3 torpedoes over 2 attacks south of Mindanao.

In return 2 of my subs have been damaged (both moderately) by surface and air attack.

Speedysteve -> 13-25th April 1943 (3/7/2011 6:54:26 PM)

Hi all,

Firstly, I know it must be boring/tough for readers only have my fleeting posts to analyse the game as Faber doesn't post/update his AAR anymore. I do hope that when things heat up I'll at least have more to post about more often even if Faber doesn't return!

The main action points over the past 13 days has been focussed on the detection and annihilation of a small Japanese convoy off Milne Bay and the steadfast US Submarines......

--------------------------

Planning -

There's also a lot of planning underway at the moment. I don't/won't attack either the Mariana's or Bonin's until I have more CV's (all equipped with Hellcats) and more assault ships to land more troops! I suspect I won't be ready to launch this invasion until August/September 1943 when I have a few Essex Class CV's as well.

There's a lot stirring in Australia as well...over 4000 AV worth of troops, ARM, ART and ENG have massed at Townsville (see screenshot) and are starting to prepare to invade enemy held bases all across Papua, Dutch New Guinea and upto and including Ambon. The ETA for these invasions is about 2-3 months away.

No offensives will be launchd into Burma until after the Monsoon ends in November 1943.

The nearest of the invasions to take place will be on Cocos Island. Troops are already in Perth for this (2nd British Division, 22nd (East African) Bde, 29th British Bde). This will kick-off within 2 months and will be escorted by CV's..........

This brings me nicely onto CentPac...........

-------------------------

CentPac -

With things being quiet here for the next few months my 4 active CV's (Lex, Sara, Big E, Hornet) have left PH and are near Marcus Island at the moment with the aim of raiding and intercepting enemy TF's inbetween Japan and the Mariana's. They'll then head south toward SoPac for use against Cocos Island.......1/2 of them have shiny new Hellcat's aboard.

-------------------------

SoPac -

As mentioned an enemy convoy was located by Catalina's off Milne Bay. A substantial ABDA CA/CL/DD force left Sydney to say hello. They arrived on 14th April and quickly surprised and sank 2 x SC and 2 x AK leaving a 3rd heavily burning (sunk 2 days later by Mitchells from Aus). They were carrying troops but I'm unsuire if they were moving in or out!

-------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

13 x Dud/missed attacks.

SS Harder got things off to a bang by capsizing AK Tarushima Maru with 2 torpedoes on thre 13th. DD Asagiri left Harder heavily damaged. Touch and go if she'll make Carnarvon.

On the 16th SS Gar located a convoy off Wakkanai and heavily damaged AK Banshu Maru.

SS Silversides sunk the troop laden AK Sinno Maru over 2 attacks off Hachijo-Jima on the 17th.

SS Whale blew up AKL Kensho Maru off Wakkanai on the 22nd.

SS Runner left AK Ohio Maru badly listing SE of Davao with a torpedo hit amidships.

SS Seal damaged AK Hokuroku Maru with a torpedo off Balikpapan.

Here's the list of damaged ships. The only damaged one really is Yorktown which was damaged by a Japanese submarine in earlier operartions. The other ships are repairing after substantial upgrades.

Speedysteve -> RE: 13-25th April 1943 (3/8/2011 3:37:39 PM)

LOL. You don't remember reading about the battles we had west of Attu Island (4 x CV sunk) and then 2 weeks later when Zui/Sho tried to go raiding north of Midway I jumped them with my CV's? Faber was unluky in that in the first battle few of his planes took off and found my CV's!

Roger Neilson II -> RE: 13-25th April 1943 (3/8/2011 4:26:38 PM)

Just caught up with this AAR just letting you know I'm still watching it, you are a couple of months ahead of my Allied forces.

Roger
