Speedysteve -> End of July 1943................... (6/30/2011 12:26:08 PM)

Hi all,

A usual month has come to an end. The main action to note was from my workhorse submarine's contributing to the war effort.

August doesn't see too many new shiny planes other than Chinese Mitchell/P40N's and a few new British models (Mossie Recon, Libs).

CVE Casablanca, Natoma Bay, BB Alabama and 9 x Fleet Subs are the new ships highlights.

Speedysteve -> RE: End of July 1943................... (6/30/2011 12:41:49 PM)

Here's an overview of the situation and an idea of upcoming invasions.

Ideal World would be to go straight for the Mariana's bbut I need more CV strength to ensure a safer landing. As such I may as well use the assets I have and land forces to re-conquer other territory until that point.

As such.........

1.) Invasion of Cocos/Christmas Island. These are exposed and not built up that I know off. Substantial land forces and my CV's almost ensure an easy victory. Handy bases for sub depots and as a springboard for Sumatra/Java invasions in the future. ETA = roughly 2 months.

2.) I have oodles of men and planes in Aus, NZ and Fuji so I may as well use them in a land campaign on New Guinea, New Caledonia and the Islands south of Ceram. CV's will support these Ops on their way, back to PH, from Operation 1. ETA 3-4 months.

3.) Simultaneous land campaign in Burma by masses of LCU's air support and invasion of the Mariana's by America's finest. That will be the biggest invasion yet. By this time a further 1 x CV (Intrepid), 4 x CVL and 10 x offensive CVE will be on the scene.

This would put the CV force (barring any losses up till then) at:

CV - 9
CVL - 7
CVE (offensive) - 16

ETA 6 monthsish.

crsutton -> RE: End of July 1943................... (6/30/2011 7:38:54 PM)

Hi Speedy,

I have actually passed you in my campaign. I am just rounding out 1943 now. The force pool just gets better. You really have had some sucess with your subs. My opponent Viperpol is just too smart and has great instincts for protecting his Japanese ships. Still. it is fun when you get a few kills. Worst problem is the appearance of the Super E type escort which are just brutal on Allied subs. I really feel that these ships and the impotent Allied naval AA fire are the two most glaring defects in the game.

What are your sub losses to date? and kills?

Mynok -> RE: End of July 1943................... (6/30/2011 8:22:39 PM)

Faber's not cleaned up his backwater bases very well. There will be opportunities for unopposed landings.

Speedysteve -> RE: End of July 1943................... (7/5/2011 8:27:29 AM)

Hi cr - yes. I've heard much of these vaunted E class vessels....not looking forward to encountering them! Will be interesting to see if I can srill make a sub impact with them around.

Where are you upto in your game in terms of offensives and major ship losses?

Subs - I've lost 14 on patrol and 4 more in port since the start of hostilities.

On the flip side Faber has sunk 49 Allied ships with subs since game start and has lost 20 subs.

Mynok - indeed. Many dot bases for me to invest in when the time comes in 44 [:)]

crsutton -> RE: End of July 1943................... (7/5/2011 2:45:51 PM)

I got a foothold in Java. (Sabang, Siboret and Sibolga) and am closing in on Rabaul but nothing in the Central Pacific. He took the Aleutian chain and I am slowly pushing back there. The biggest loss for me is that Viperpol has virtually taken all of China. I personally think the China cannot be held vs a determined Japanese player and Viperpol has proven that in spades. He has fought a great campaign there. If I ever play Japan-China goes down..[;)]

We have had two carrier fights but have really only heavily damaged each other. I have not lost a CV yet and he has only lost two smaller ones. We have traded CVLs and CVEs but KB is still very healthy and dangerous. I lost one BB since Pearl and he has lost none. We both like to fight with CAs and DDs though and both have lost quite a few. The big advantage as you know is the flood of DDs that I am getting. The Fletcher class DDs just rule the ocean and a swarm of them with good torpedoes is dangerous to any capital ship in a night fight.

The game is very weighted to surface actions and I think this is a great advantage to the Allies as they get more ship. But of course, the game is not weighted to air combat and that would also give the Allies the advantage. Scen #2 is tough but balanced and more of a challenge to the Allied player.

Speedysteve -> 1-10th August 1943 (7/18/2011 7:43:35 AM)

Hi all,

Hi cr - How did you manage to land on Java despite him having KB and surely he was able to bring in substantial amounts of LBA? I haree on the ganes's focus on surface combat. Japanese ASW and the a2a model still frustrate me a little bit....still a great game and look at where it's come from!

------------------------

Things are starting to stir in CentPac.....with the arrival of Executor, Chimera and Bunker Hill to PH phase 1 of the SwPac operations is starting to proceed. Support vessels, assault ships, tankers and CVE's are on their way to Aus. On the 12th August the main CV force will depart PH also bound for Aus.

Quietish elsewhere except the arrival of more troops, supplies and men to SE India in preparation for the Burma offensive.

Should be more exciting updates over the next month or so!

------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

8 dud/missed attacks.

Not a great start to the month.

SS Growler got things started on the 1st by reportedly sinking AKL Matsutan Maru off Fukue-jima.

SS Sunfish blew up AK Chihaya Maru with 4 torpedoes off Balikpapan.

SS Sawfish left AO Shiretoko heavily damaged with 2 torpedoes off Naha.

On the 5th Growler struck again sinking AKL Fuyukawa Maru off Fukue-jima.

SS Amberjack left AK Hauraki Maru heavily damaged off Soerabaja with 2 torpedoes.

Speedysteve -> 11-20th August 1943 (7/31/2011 8:08:50 PM)

Hi all,

Sitzkreig continues.....Various fleets are en route to Sydney for Phase 1 Operations. The CV's are the last in line just nearing Canton Island.

Faber conducts many bombing runs in China every day and from tracking them I snuck in a P38G FG and took down 11 unescorted Lillies bombing Pakhoi on the 16th. That will make him think carefully and allocate escorts hopefully.

---------------------

Submarine Warfare -

A 'strange' development has taken place this week. All of a sudden Japanese LBA has started to find their mark and hit my subs. 7 subs were hit this week and 1 of these sank (after being tagged by an ASW TF off Wakkanai.)

11 dud/missed attacks.

SS KXVII damaged TK Gen'yo Maru with a torpedo south of Saigon on the 11th.

SS Trigger blew up SC CHa-35 off Toyohara on the 13th.

SS Tullibee pumped 50 shells [8|] into AKL Taisoku Maru south of Kanoya.

SS KXVII was in action again on the 15th leaving AK Seiwa Maru listing heavily damaged. The 15th was a bumper day overall as SS Tarpon blew up PC Nire off Brunei, SS Balao sank AKL Boko Maru off Jolo and SS Amberjack sank CM Wakataka off Soerabaja.

SS O20 reported sinking TK Nisshin Maru #2 with 2 torpedoes off Balabac on the 16th.

SS Haddock reported sinking AO Kokuyo Maru with 2 torpedoes off Daito Shoto.

SS O20 was in action again on the 18th sinking AK Sumatra Maru with 2 torpedoes off Cam Ranh Bay.

SS Albacore sank PB Tamamura Maru south of Daito Shoto.

Sorry, have not been paying attention.

Well, I had a good foothold in the Solomons and when I knew KB was busy there, I grabbed Sabang and managed to take Sibolga and Siboret Island. Viperpol reacted like a cornered tiger and I have not gone far from those points but it is a nice foothold and I doubt I can be thrown out. It will keep him busy.......Sabang was the golden nugget as it is a level 9 airfield and really prevents any major portions of the Japanese fleet from passing into the Indian Ocean. We both lost a few light ships but it was a successful operation. It makes good use of the Indian army which is getting very strong.

If Sabang is not heavily defended then it is a must for any Allied player.

Speedysteve -> 21-31st August 1943 (8/11/2011 9:44:50 AM)

Hi all,

Hi cr - I agree. Sabang is a jewel to take if you can. Without CV air cover I wouldn't be able to though and my CV's are needed elsewhere so my CBI army willl march overland into Burma to 'have a go'.

------------------------

My CV's and supporting combat vessels are passing Norfolk Island and will be at Sydney within 4 days. They'll then refuel and head to Perth with the landing and assault forces bound for Cocos and Christmas Islands. Concurrent to this support forces are also en route from Aden and a smaller force will depart Cape Town soon as well.

It's alll routinely quiet elsewhere except a few bombing raids each day by Japanese LBA in China.

------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

Well at least the crazy number of hits on my subs has diminished. Just the 1 sub damaged these past 11 days.

Frustratingly though, my subs have decided to target escort vessels a lot this week [:-][:@]

18 dud/missed attacks....14 against escorts!

Some success reported though:

SS Balao heavily damaged AK Kinryu Maru with a torpedo SW of Tarakan on the 23rd.

SS Sturgeon sank AK Iwakuni Maru off Chichi-jima on the 25th.

On the 29th SS Cabrilla heavily damaged AK Kakoruta Maru with a torpedo off Iwo-jima.

SS Haddo damaged AK Tamashima Maru on the 30th SW of Tarakan.

SS Bowfin reported heavily damaging the oil laden TK Tonan Maru #2 with a torpedo south of Torishima.

Speedysteve -> End of August 1943............. (8/11/2011 2:06:53 PM)

Hi all,

Another 'usual' kind of month goes by. I am aiming for some action towards the end of September/early October though.....the readers rejoice [;)]

Some nice new shiny toys come along this month.....Spit Vc's for the Brits, A20G's, B24J's and P51A's for the US.

A lot of Auxilliary and escort ships enter play along with CVL Cowpens and 9 x SS (2 of which are the first Brit SS reinforcements to enter the fray).

On land the 6th Infantry Div. is the highlight on land.

Speedysteve -> 1-10th September 1943 (9/14/2011 8:31:21 PM)

Hi all,

Wow. This was down to page 3...not really surprising though with my limited updates and lack of action of late!

Apologies my end. I've just got married so time has been limited for gaming of late! I'm also off travelling for our Honeymoon for 3.5 months in 2 weeks. The war will be on hold whilst I'm travelling!

--------------------------

I know I tease you guys that action will start soon....but it will [;)]

My major naval units are now nearing Perth. They'll all arrive between the next 2-7 days. Support assets are also moving from Columbo and Cape Town. Depending on how time goes I may details the assets involved for this Operation (capturing Cocos and Christmas Islands) before I go travelling.

--------------------------

All quiet elsewhere though........

--------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

6 dud/missed attacks.

SS Truant, patrolling NW off Malaya, located and sank AK Ryuyo Maru on the 1st September.

SS KXVI heavily damaged TK Kenwa Maru with a torpedo north of Brunei on the 2nd.

On the 3rd SS Puffer reported sinking AO Sata near Donggala.

Later in the day SS Skate sank the troop laden AK Tarayasu Maru near Aogashima.

On the 4th SS Seawolf reported sinking the troop laden AP Kamakura Maru off Samah.

On the 8th SS Triton sank AKL Fukuyo Maru off Fukue-jima.

The 10th saw 2 successful actions. The first by SS Tautog heavily damaging AK Amagisan Maru north of Palau.

The 2nd saw SS Puffer in action again sinking AK Syohei Maru off Balikpapan.

Hi all,

Game upto 15th September but will now be on hold until I return from 4 months travelling around Australia, NZ and Fiji.

I will return.........

Hi all,

Honeymoon is almost over now so hostilities against Fabertong will re-commence over the next week or so. Hope to still have some readers by then[;)]

witpqs -> RE: 1-10th September 1943 (1/11/2012 4:40:43 AM)

Got it - the honeymoon is over and the hostilities are commencing.

Thanks guys[8D] Honeymon was great. Brilliant to have 4 months away. Been a fun few weeks adapting, sorting stuff out and looking for a job.

Game update soon. Forces are almost ready to go from Perth for the next Great Crusade....more soon.

Speedysteve -> 11-20th September 1943 (1/27/2012 11:47:54 AM)

Hi all,

First update upon my return!

Usual antics really with Sitzkreig in CBI and CentPac with my offensive forces gathering in Perth for the next Operation (Operation Reindeer - the occupation of Christmas and the Cocos Islands).

All the necessary forces are now in place and the troops were given their embarkation orders on the 20th September. The offensive forces involved are:

2nd British Division
22nd (East African) Bde
23rd British Bde
29th British Bde

These will be supported with overwhelming naval power:

8 x CV
4 x CVL
6 x Offensive CVE
12 x BB
Oodles of Cruisers and Destroyers.

It will probably take about 3-4 days to get all the equipment on board then we set off.

I have no concrete idea what Faber has for Defence on these Islands but SigInt has detected a Bde or there about's before. The only air threat can come from LBA based on Sumatra/Java as there's no known runways built on any of the invasion islands.

------------------------------

Submarine Warfare:

9 dud/missed attacks.

SS Sunfish reported in blowing up AK Ueizuru Maru off Balikpapan on the 11th.

Also on the 11th, SS Puffer partrolling in the same area, reported heavily damaging AK Terushima Maru.

On the 12th Puffer sank AO Kyokuto Maru.

SS Haddo heavily damaged AK Kokuryu Maru off Tarakan.

SS Bluefish sank TK Omurosan Maru west of Palau.

SS Sunfish was in action again on the 13th locating the damaged AK Terushima Maru finishing her off with 4 torpedoes.

On the 14th SS Haddo had fun again sinking CM Hoko off Tarakan. In the afternoon she sank AK Keisyo Maru from the same convoy.

SS Mingo sank the small freighter Nagano Maru SW of Japan.

On the 17th Haddo's luck came to an end when she heavily damaged AK Peking Maru off Tarakan. E W-25 located her and sank her with the loss of all hands. RIP[&o]

SS Haddock heavily damaged the troop laden AK Yahiko Maru off Okinawa.

NE of Japan SS S-27 hunted the hunter and sank SC CHA-44.

SS Seahorse (also operating off Okinawa) sank APD Tade on the 18th

SS Runner did well in sinking TK Kotai Maru with 3 torpedoes off Dadjangas.

Japanese LBA sank 1 sub and damaged SS Amberjack.

The Good Guys heavily damaged an IJN sub NW of Perth (worrying that at least 2 IJN subs are patrolling down here).

crsutton -> RE: 11-20th September 1943 (1/27/2012 2:54:00 PM)

Welcome back. Look at Siboret Island. You will need support there and LSTs to supply it well but it can be built up to a level 9 airbase that is in bombing range of a lot of oil.

Speedysteve -> RE: 11-20th September 1943 (1/30/2012 8:29:36 AM)

Hi crsutton,

Thanks. Hadn't planned on going to there but from looking into it you're right it could be a great base to buildup. It will have to wait for a future phase of invasions though as I don't have the spare troops and ships to get 'it on' there at the moment. Operation Reindeer is underway from Perth.

ALERT. COM CENPAC reporting "CV Enterprise hit by 2 torpedoes from an I-Boat near Cocos Islands on 30th September. Significant flooding. Unlikely ship will be saved. Will do our best and all efforts all be made to keep the Big-E afloat"

Grrr. That's 4 CV's Fabertong has tagged with CV's 2 have sunk (Yorktown and Hornet) and a 3rd likely will now.

A little baffled as to how Faber suddenly had over 15 submarines in the Cocos Islands region....anyone would think he has SigInt and me nothing [;)]

Speedysteve -> 21-30th September 1943 (2/8/2012 5:00:39 PM)

Hi all,

Firstly, to the 'main event'.

Operation Reindeer had been going fine. Lots of sun for my men on decks, regular CAP, regular plane searches detecting oodles of submarines on the way to the Cocos Island then on 30th September an I-Boat (a.k.a. sneaky s*d) decided to smack 2 torps into Big E. Needless to say I'm less than impressed with this and the p*ss poor ASW work of the 100 or so destroyers in a 10 mile area! It's pretty likely she'll sink but she'll try to make it back.

The Offensive part is due to begin on 1st October with air raids against the Japanese defenders on the ground. I SHOUDLN'T have to worry about enemy LBA as neither Christmas or Cocos Island have had airfields developed.

With their being more action for now I'll provide more regular updates.

----------------------------

CBI -

A bit of action here for once as Faber decided to oppose a small supply convoy that was at Akyab. It's a maxed out AF from my end containing over 160 Hurricanes (initially). LBA detected it on the 26th and fighter sweeps and attack missions begun on the 27th and 28th. Overall it was a nice bit of fun. I lost 2 x AK with another AK heavily damaged. I also lost approximately 60 fighters (mainly Hurri's but P38's entered the fray as well on the 28th). In return Faber lost about 80 planes (Zero/Betty and Tojo). A good bit of fun for the Commonwealth guys.

I also snuck in some P38's and shot down 10 x Sally which were conducting milk runs over Loyang.

-----------------------------

SoPac -

A small enemy convoy was detected at Espiritu Santu and was despatched on the 21st by a small DD force (IJN lost 2 x AK and 1 x PB).

-----------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

9 dud/missed attacks.

SS Haddock heavily damaged AK Tamon Maru with a torpedo on the 21st SW of Japan.

On the 22nd both SS Herring and SS Perch claimed success sinking PB Atsu Maru and damaging AP Suwa Maru respectively.

SS Runner checked in on the 23rd reportedly sinking AK Taiko Maru with 2 torpedoes south of Mindanao.

SS Greenling had success on the 24th sinking PB Wa 12 off Iwo Jima in the morning and heavily damaging AK Daijo Maru in the PM.

SS Barb finished off the damaged AP Suwa Maru with 2 torpedoes.

On the 27th SS Halibut blew up TK Batopaha Maru north of Okinawa.

On the 28th SS Halibut attacked the same convoy heavily damaging TK Asukasan Maru with a torpedo.

On the 30th SS Muskallunge left TK Ceram Maru heavily damaged with a torpedo hit off Jesselton.

SS Triton destroyed a small AK Kakuzan Maru with shells and torpedoes south of Japan.

On the other side SS I-22 was reported sunk off Geraldton by ASW assets guarding the Reindeer Invasion force.
