Indeed. Massive credit to Faber carrying on with this game for so long. I can't imagine it's a lot of fun for him yet he is always very punctual at sending back turns. I for one don't begrudge him this tactical victory.

Yup, fair play indeed

Speedysteve -> 24-27th December 1944 (11/16/2013 2:00:31 PM)

Hi all,

Thank guys [:)]

Overall a fairly quiet few days with the usual fare in CentPac = fairly ineffectual bombing of Iwo Jima and continuing B29 night bombing of Osaka/Kyoto (Faber has moved in about 50 additional day fighters fling at night which has caused far fewer hits on the city over the past 2 nights BUT has led to about 10-20 Japs being downed each night for 4-5 B29's).

--------------------

SRA:

My Brit CV/CVE's took parting shots at the Japs as they withdrew to Singapore. I made an error and forgot to reduce the range on some of my TB groups so they attacked Hong Kong's port in reduced numbers and in fragmeents on the 24th. I did lose 30 valuable men and machines BUT the attacks gained valuable intel:

Afternoon Air attack on Hong Kong , at 77,61

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 36 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M5c Zero x 15
Ki-44-IIc Tojo x 6

Allied aircraft
Avenger II x 20
Corsair II x 3
F6F-5 Hellcat x 7
TBM-3 Avenger x 19

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5c Zero: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Avenger II: 10 destroyed, 2 damaged
Corsair II: 1 destroyed
F6F-5 Hellcat: 3 destroyed
TBM-3 Avenger: 1 destroyed, 5 damaged

Japanese Ships
CVL Chiyoda, Bomb hits 2, on fire
CVL Mizuho, Bomb hits 1

Port hits 2

Once all my CV/CVE's are back at Singapore (will be all back by the 29th) we'll re-group and return for more fun off Hong Kong.

The other sour note was the heavily burning CVE Nehenta Bay (from the naval battle) went down on the way back to port.

The Allies attacked the weak Japs surrounded at Praboemoelih on the 24th with success:

Ground combat at Praboemoelih (48,92)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 34097 troops, 578 guns, 734 vehicles, Assault Value = 1023

Defending force 40403 troops, 532 guns, 703 vehicles, Assault Value = 676

Allied adjusted assault: 920

Japanese adjusted defense: 41

Allied assault odds: 22 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: disruption(-), fatigue(-), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
3399 casualties reported
Squads: 108 destroyed, 35 disabled
Non Combat: 132 destroyed, 81 disabled
Engineers: 6 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 83 (68 destroyed, 15 disabled)
Vehicles lost 26 (17 destroyed, 9 disabled)
Units destroyed 3

Allied ground losses:
896 casualties reported
Squads: 9 destroyed, 118 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 29 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 8 disabled
Guns lost 25 (2 destroyed, 23 disabled)
Vehicles lost 24 (1 destroyed, 23 disabled)

---------------

Northern Aus:

The starving Japs were routed by Aussies (small Jap Bde and Art unit) who stormed and re-took Broome on the 24th.

That just leaves Port Hedland left in Jap hands.

---------------

VP's:

Unfortunately I need another 3,500 points to achieve AV so I won't make it by Jan 1st 1945.

---------------

Submarine Warfare:

0 x dud/missed attacks.

SS Tench sank PB Zosen Maru NE of Okinawa on the 25th.

JocMeister -> RE: 24-27th December 1944 (11/16/2013 2:04:18 PM)

Zeroes and Tojos! [X(]

Looks like he still hasnīt been able to recover his industry!

Speedysteve -> RE: 24-27th December 1944 (11/16/2013 4:06:31 PM)

Faber's had no chance with that IMO. He's had an ever decreasing access to SRA oil centres leading to no access to any of them since November 1944. That coupled with mass destruction to Japanese industry (Osaka view attached) = no hope IMO.

Wow! How the heck did you do that to Osaka? [:D]

Didnīt you have to give up daylight bombing?

Speedysteve -> RE: 24-27th December 1944 (11/16/2013 9:31:43 PM)

Constant night bombing for over a month[8D]

JocMeister -> RE: 24-27th December 1944 (11/17/2013 5:55:43 AM)

No NFs? I lost 20-30 B29s for each raid to them. So more then 1-2 raids per month is impossible. [:(]

Speedysteve -> 28-31 December 1944/end of December 1944.............. (11/19/2013 12:53:10 PM)

Hi all,

I won't present the usual monthly summary update as the game will most likely end within the next month and I'll provide a total summary then.

In short December saw few further territorial gains but a further massive reduction of Japanese industry (netting a further 6,200 additional VP's).

I'll most likely invade Iwo Jima in January just to take some further action. I could just 'sit back' and let the B29's win the war but I may even move my CV's up to Japan to have a snipe towards the end as well.

-----------------

Quite a quiet 4 last days of December. The usual B29 raids over Osaka, fairly ineffectual bombing of Iwo Jima and the slow battering of Japs at Cagayan and Praboemoelih.

Brit CV's have left Singapore again and will be off Hong Kong within 2-3 days time for more fun and games.

-----------------

Submarine Warfare:

No submarine contacts.

Hi Jocke,

There are NF's but only in drips and drabs (would only assume this is due to limited number of production and planes that Faber has?!?).

I tend to lose 0-5 B29's per raid in general and probably launch about 15-18 raids per month.

JocMeister -> RE: 24-27th December 1944 (11/19/2013 4:59:48 PM)

Yes. well said.

Just caught up to this and being the guys who had half the KB sunk by a 22 knot BB TF I understand Castor Tory's position noted earlier.

The one confusing part to me in your listing is that you say the ships attacked at night and yet your report states Daytime. It also says 4k yards, so that makes me think for some reason there was low visibility, which is the only thing that could have let these quick ships dart in for a little surprise.

I do think the neutered power of combat ships in CV TFs is a bit hard to swallow though regardless of the other potential factors involved here.

Speedysteve -> RE: 23rd December 1944 (11/20/2013 7:39:20 AM)

Hi obvert. Thanks for your thoughts. You're right on the surface combat. It must have retreated and got attacked in the daytime. Rest of the factors exist mind you.

As a tidbit I'd love to be able to look at the Japanese side in this game. I'd really like to see the state of the economy and what exists where!

Yeah, it would be interesting to see a lot of late war economic situations to get a feeling for how certain game types play out.

Speedysteve -> RE: 23rd December 1944 (11/20/2013 8:27:59 AM)

Maybe once I've achieved AV I'll ask Faber to pop in to this AAR and post screenshots of various things..............

Speedysteve -> 3rd January 1945 (11/20/2013 10:31:38 AM)

Hi all,

Ok. Caveat firstly. I'm disappointed and frustrated with the combat engine again......

A quiet 2 first days of 1945 (one thing to note which is very good is AE's replenishing CV/CVE Ops points = brilliant).

The 3rd of January was a different matter off Hong Kong (again).

----------------------

Once more a CV TF 'RETREATS' INTO the path of an enemy SC TF. FFS. IDIOT ENGINE:

'Fortunately' CV Indefatigable only has 26 SYS Damage and light FLT/ENG damage. The annoying this is this caused my CV stack to all retreat back towards Singapore and they didn't launch any daylight raids. Brilliant day lads. Just brilliant.

To cap is off the SC TF escorting my CV TF's bumped into Yamato and had a total failure with my gunners not able to hit a barn door and BB Howe's magazine exploded. Fantastic. BB New Mexico and CL Ceylon also sunk meaning I need a further 850 VP's to get AV. Nice work guys really nice work. ^*Ģ^*Ģ^)^Ģ)""*$%*)!

The only consolation was my subs put in a decent performance around Hong Kong:

SS Thornback hit CV Katsuragi trying to flee Hong Kong with a torpedo.

SS Rock hit BB Kirishima with a torpedo outside Hong Kong.

Then SS Snook hit CA Maya with a torpedo returning to Hong Kong after blowing up the SC TF.

-----------------

The only other news to note is Mariana based B29's shifted their target to Tokyo's AF's packed with over 800 planes. I've stopped these night raids now though as I lost 18 x B29 for about 80 enemy planes.

Once a couple more CV TF's reach back on station of Iwo Jima in the next 3 days I'll invade Iwo Jima (tired of waiting and the fort levels mean bombing causes such little damage) and then probably send my CV's up to Japan for a final showdown to finish off Japan and force them to the table.

(1) Another 25 ship CV TF?

(2) It is never a good idea to put a slow BB (New Mexico) in a TF together with a fast BB (Howe) in the same Surface Combat TF.

1.) Sure. I want good AA on them and you're missing the point. AGAIN the TF retreated INTO the path of a SC TF.

2.) Fair point on that but still a dismal display by my boys.

JocMeister -> RE: 3rd January 1945 (11/20/2013 11:05:47 AM)

Speedysteve -> RE: 3rd January 1945 (11/20/2013 11:34:48 AM)

Faber's said he had 4 x SC TF's out there so it may well be the engine couldn't cope and they had no choice but to withdraw into a SC TF....who knows. Nothing can be done about it now.

Some revenge was exacted next day anyhow. More later.

Speedysteve -> 4-5th January 1945 (11/21/2013 1:49:39 PM)

Hi all,

The focus is once more off Hong Kong as vicious battles rage.

The Allies exact a measure of revenge on the IJN over the past 2 days.

On the 4th CV forces had to once more dodge IJN SC TF's (which they do so fortunately) and launch successful reprisal air raids in the day:

Thats a nice little haul of VPs... [:)]

Speedysteve -> 6-9th January 1945 (11/25/2013 7:14:40 AM)

Hi all,

We're nearing the end of the war but it drags on......

CentPac:

B29's still resting here but the landings went in on Iwo Jima on the 9th. Very heavy indeed:

Ground combat at Iwo-jima (108,77)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 23561 troops, 371 guns, 622 vehicles, Assault Value = 1255

Defending force 27242 troops, 309 guns, 106 vehicles, Assault Value = 589

Allied adjusted assault: 53

Japanese adjusted defense: 3685

Allied assault odds: 1 to 69 (fort level 6)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), disruption(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), disruption(-)

Japanese ground losses:
462 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 42 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 25 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 11 disabled
Guns lost 22 (3 destroyed, 19 disabled)
Vehicles lost 5 (1 destroyed, 4 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
7469 casualties reported
Squads: 158 destroyed, 521 disabled
Non Combat: 148 destroyed, 152 disabled
Engineers: 43 destroyed, 46 disabled
Guns lost 200 (36 destroyed, 164 disabled)
Vehicles lost 336 (156 destroyed, 180 disabled)

Assaulting units:
44th Tank Battalion
81st Infantry Division
5th Marine Division
XIV Corps Combat Engineer Regiment
716th Tank Battalion
V US Amphib Corps

Defending units:
52nd Division
Iwo-jima Naval Guard Unit
72nd JAAF AF Bn
109th JAAF AF Bn
19th Army
6th Naval Construction Battalion
14th Base Force
33rd Special Base Force
73rd JAAF AF Bn
63rd JNAF AF Unit
Tonei Hvy Gun Regiment
11th JAAF AF Bn

The only saving grace is the large Eng Rgt is in full condition. The Marines are out of it though. I'll probably try an attack in many days time and hope the Engineers reduce the forts. If not Iwo will not fall before game end.

My CV's have moved northwards and will be 6 hexes south of Tokyo tomorrow. I'm not planning any offensive strikes tomorrow as I want to absorb anything the Japs throw at me. There's a reported 750 fighters at Tokyo alone [:)]

My B29's will begin operations again in a day or 2 time.

----------------------

SRA:

Fairly quiet here as my CV's headed back to Singapore starting on the 8th. Raids were launched on Hong Kong's port on the 6th and 7th. Both Yamato and Kirishima are in port and were hit with 20ish bombs. Once I've re-armed at Singapore I'll be back again.

Powloon -> RE: 6-9th January 1945 (11/25/2013 9:06:06 AM)

Wow the Iwo operation looks like it could be bloody! Do you think you are likely to make auto victory by the end of the year?

As a relative newbie does the game check for Auto victory continuously or just at set points such as the end of the year?

I also wanted to mention my admiration for your opponent who is somehow keeping the turns flowing whilst being slaughtered! Although I guess sinking those CVEs of yours brought a much needed morale boost [:D]

JocMeister -> RE: 6-9th January 1945 (11/25/2013 11:10:09 AM)

Ouch @ Iwo. [:(]

In all honestly I simply donīt think you have enough to take it. 3-4 more Marine IDs and it might have worked. Do you have anything more prepped for Iwo?

Speedysteve -> RE: 6-9th January 1945 (11/25/2013 11:20:18 AM)

Hi Guys,

Powloon: I should get AV within the month! I only need 3000 more VP's to do so. Strategic bombing and CV raids on Japan should secure that and force the Japanese to surrender.

JocMeister: I don't think so either but it's a mute point now. I'll try 1 attack in the next week or so and if that doesn't work I'll sit there until game end in the next month. I have 1 more ID prepped for it but won't send it in as it won't make enough of a difference.

JocMeister -> RE: 6-9th January 1945 (11/25/2013 11:47:50 AM)

Sounds reasonable. Another ID wonīt change anything and landing with it now would just trigger another shock attack!

Speedysteve -> 10-12th January 1945 (11/26/2013 1:15:33 PM)

CentPac:

Japan felt the power of the Allies when on the 10th January The CV Armada arrived south of Tokyo. Over the past 3 days a series of sweeps over Tokyo and failed raids against my CV's (sometimes encountering 500 x Hellcat on CAP) have lead to over 500 enemy planes reported destroyed for the loss of 70 Friendlies. I even encountered some Nates!

I'll probably attack Tokyo's AF's in a few days time and then the B29's will begin to bomb Tokyo again from the Mariana's.

All quiet on Iwo Jima as my men rest and supplies flow ashore.

SRA:

My CV's will be back in Singapore on 13th January. We'll re-arm and head back to Hong Kong to try and sink the ships in port there.
