Well originaly it was called Lynne, and then it came under the fiefdom of Bishop Losinga who renamed it Lynn Episcopi in 1101 ,after a while it was granted a Royal Charter to hold a Market and a Fair(called the Mart, which still runs today)When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1538, the town and manor became royal property. As a result, the town became renamed King's Lynn and Lynn Regis. It was an important Trading Port and part of the Hanseatic League. Its also the birthplace of one Captain George Vancouver (1757–1798), an officer in the Royal Navy, who was the first person to explore the Pacific coast of the modern day Canadian province of British Columbia; the American states of Alaska, Washington, and Oregon; and the southwest coast of Australia. It is also the place of the first school attended by Diana, Princess of Wales. Also near by a certain John Rolfe had a country house in the village of Heacham, which is where he spent some time with his wife,Pocohontas.
