AirGriff -> OT: '41 US Navy model pics anyone? (12/21/2009 5:36:26 PM)

Santa is bringing me a 1:700 scale model of the New Orleans class CA Astoria for Christmas. I was wondering if anyone has done any models of US Navy ships in the Counter Measures 1 paint scheme, circa 1941 and would be interested in forwarding some pictures? Just want to make sure my paint job models the era. I'd do a later war one, but the camo is probably out of my depth for now. Besides, I like the prewar stuff. Thanks.

I haven't built any USN Models other than Arizona and a Buckley DE years ago. Not surprisingly I do build the IJN vessels though.

Camo isn't really that hard, though you will need some masking film and some skill with an exacto knife. Air brushing gives the most uniform look, but I have been able to make some quite convincing paint schemes with just brushes. Best thing to do is to find a picture of the ship with the camo scheme, and get as close an approximation of it in pencil on the masking film once the film is stuck to the model. Then you can carfully cut and remove pieces of film for each color, saving the ones not being used ATM to use later with the next color.

Also remember to thin your paint out a little and don't expect to fully cover in 1 coat...2-4 coats are usually needed to get good uniform coverage.

And good luck with it! [:)]

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I did find a great website with lots of model warship pictures. Here's the address, http://www.steelnavy.com/index.htm.

AirGriff, which ship is that on your Avatar? It seems to be missing a funnel or something?

Thanks,
fbs

The Alabama. I visited her once when I was really young. I can't remember where I got the sketch.

Check out modelshipwrights.com it's a web site devoted to ship modelers. You may find someone has built your kit in the scheme you want. If not, they are a great community of modelers and will help you anyway they can.

I just retired, so picked up a 1/144 fletcher class destroyer with photo etch. Nice kit,

I'll be tackling hasegawa's 1:350 Akagi with all the trimmings, looking through the box and all the photo-etch is daunting. what am I getting myself into!
