Rex Bellator -> Coastal Batteries Are Firing Blanks (6/28/2002 10:52:11 PM)

As the proud and crafty new owner of Lunga I flooded the area with CD units and minefields, then sat back to see what the Americans would try to do about it. Sure enough a bombardment TF from Luganville made its way to Lunga, then bombarded and then retired totally unscathed :(

Naval bombardment of Lunga, at 38,40

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M Nell x 1 destroyed
G3M Nell x 7 damaged
G4M1 Betty x 1 destroyed
G4M1 Betty x 5 damaged

Airbase hits 10
Runway hits 66

I attempted to count the number of Coastal Defence Guns I had at Lunga the following morning, and lost count after 170  however I have a screenie which shows the size of the CD forces at Lunga, none of which bothered to engage the foe.

So then, are coastal defence units broke, or not intended to actually fire back at shipping? If it is the latter then what is the point of them? Comments appreciated.

How do you know that the bombing TF was unscathed ????

Erik Rutins -> Wow. (6/28/2002 10:59:25 PM)

That's a heck of a coastal defense. The one thought that comes to mind is perhaps the Allies were using BBs? If so, they would bombard from beyond your CD range. CD batteries definitely work, but they are best against unloading transports and CA/DD bombardments. Your mines should eventually get some of their ships as well.

Regards,

- Erik

In my previous games, I lose a few transports to CD batteries

In bombing missions with mainly CA & DD, I got a few hits on my CAs and DDs so it works !!!

Rex Bellator -> I've seen them hit before as well (6/28/2002 11:45:33 PM)

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm using v1.11 and am sure that the first time a US TF tried to bombard Lunga I saw some hits reported on the bombarding TF. 3 or 4 shell hits (nothing serious) on several of the enemy ships IIRC.

This time nothing at all was reported, and the TF consisted of 2 or 3 US cruisers and DD support. I know this because my LBA raided the TF the following morning. No damage was visible on any ships either when they commenced their raid. I'm 100% sure the couple of hundred guns arranged around Lunga didn't engage the ships.

I have owned Lunga for a few weeks, there is plenty of support and everyone is in good shape.

Now in relation to the above, I have a further concern which Erik touched upon - my defensive mines seem to have stopped working as well! I have them laid so that any US TF must pass through at least two hexes of minefields to get to Lunga, and initially they hurt one approaching bombardment TF. Now I have seen several bombardment TFs pass throught them without a single scratch.

It could be down to luck, but I wonder if I haven't found a one-shot wonder bug where everything works fine at first but...

The mines are working at some level. I'm holding Lunga (as Allied), and the IJN bomb TF's/fast transport TF's just sail right through the minefields no sweat, 2 hexes coming in, 2 hexes going out...repeatedly. BB's, CA's, the whole 9 yards. Opened the IJN side up, and they haven't even spotted the mines. I'd been dumping mines there non-stop for several months, even before capturing Lunga, so there is upwards of 400 mines in each shallow water USN owned hex.

On the other hand, I've had 2 IJN subs hit defensive mines. Also, when the IJN carriers came down to raid Lunga, just when I thought things were hopeless, 1 CV, 1 CVL, one CA, and 2 DD's hit mines, but in a different hex .
