slybelle -> Old Korea Tutorial - Why did this happen? (12/22/2009 1:51:45 PM)

As I have been trying to determine if TOAW is for me, I happened to find an old demo version of TOAW (Century of Warfare edition). I know this is different then the matrix version but thought I could see at least the basics.

However, after playing the scenario a couple of times I'm a little confused on how scenarios end. As an example in my last game, at turn 7, the game immediately ended and said I was the victor (United Nations). The game is supposed to last between 27 and 52 weeks, but only made it to 7. On top of that, I have no idea why they declared me the victor and so early in the game. I absolutely did nothing and was destroyed all over the place. All my untis basically had to retreat all the way down to the most southern city. The communist forces controlled everything.

One other quick note in the situation briefing area it says that my current status is "Overwhelming defeat".

So why did I win so quickly? What did I do to deserve that? Is this just maybe a bad scenario? Seemed kind of crazy to me. I played the scenario a couple of other times (with me playing just as bad) and it lasted to turn 52.

Any thoughts?

A very old demo, so bugged?

Possible, but I think it is the tutorial that came with the original game created by Norm.

Possibly the demo is just that- a demo.

Entirely possible that an 'old' demo is just there to show one how the game works.

Got a link???

Well, in basic:

1) The 'readme' is signed by Norm his ownself.....
2) Does the suker still run? If not, no surprise.....
3) What I'm guessing is that it allowed you to run the program several times and then hit a 'stop-sign' and and gave it up. I'd suspect something like a timer that gives a certain number of turns...the "Overwhelming defeat" is what happens if your really loosing.

Anyway, that's my guess!

Surprisingly, still runs like a champ, even on my Windows 7 64-Bit install. I haven't seen the game end at turn 7 since I first posted, so I'm just going to chalk it up to something strange.

I guess what I was hoping would happen at the end of a scenario it would tell you "why" did it end. If it did this, then I probably wouldn't have had any questions. For example, "game over" because this event happened or this victory level occured.

Not a big deal. At this point, think I have seen enough to decide whether to pull the trigger or not.

I'm wondering what you decided. And by the way, I'm surprized it ran under Windows 7 since it was written on a 286 computer from the 70's. And the queer ending is probably one of those things that happen when a program is written for one operating system and ran under another. I'm a retired computer programmer and I've seen it happen so many times ( crash to desktop, etc. ) that it's no longer a surprize when it happens to me.

Well, ended up taking the plunge and bought the game. With the holiday and all, so far haven't really been able to do much with it yet. Hopefully I will be able to dive in over the next week.

Good for you.  Don't be afraid to ask questions and may I suggest the Articles Index for ideas on how to play better and stuff like that.  You can find it here:
