GMeyer -> installation of latest patch switches (12/24/2009 7:39:47 PM)

I first submitted this question to the helpdesk; they told me to post it here.

I was certainly pleased with the new update, especially the command line switches recommended. Problem is, they won't install and prehaps it just XP doing its thing. When I right click Quick Start and then "properties," I get a Menu Screen in which the tab containing the target box has been selected. When I added your command switches (from -wd to -deepColor) by typing them in the target box itself, I got a message that stated the slection specified wasn't valid and to make sure the path and file name were complete.
I soon found out why. Although when installed, the game showed "C:\Matrix\War in the Pacific-Admirable's Edition" as the destination, that was not correct. If you look on the General Tab from the same menu, the display shows the icon and (quick start) as being located in "Documents and Settings\George Meyer.Law\Start Menu\Programs\War in the Pacific-Admiral's Edition" The rest of the files are located In "C:\Matrix\War in the Pacific-Admiral's Edition", including the execuable file, "War in the Pacific-Admiral Edition.exe."
Do you have any idea what I should do to install the command switches? I have no idea why XP divided up the installation of the files--and indeed wasn't aware that it had done so until now--but i have since discovered this is no anomaly, all Matrix games files are divided in a similar manner.
Thanks.

Sorry, I do not know what the words "install the command switches" could mean. The command switches are built in to the code - there is no way to install or uninstall them. I do not understand the question.

after .exe" there must be a space and then -wd -fd etc.

tbridges -> RE: installation of latest patch switches (12/24/2009 9:58:09 PM)

with a space between each command switch as well

GMeyer -> RE: installation of latest patch switches (12/28/2009 8:07:49 PM)

Ok, not "install," "type."  My question then becomes, how do you type in the command switches suggested by, I presume, the developers of WitP-AE, in their most recent (12/7/09) readme file? [Pages 1 and 2.]  In that document, the developers (or Matrix or somebody) have described a means of altering the code command switches.  That particular process starts with a right click on the "quick start" file, which brings up a menu from which "properties" may be selected.  From the "properties" screen, one can then get at the "target box" into which the newly suggested command switches are typed AFTER the witp-AE.exe file.
If you read my original post, you will see that on my system (WIN XP) installation does not result in the "witp-ae.exe" file being placed in a folder that the "target box" will access through the means described in the readme file. Win XP segregates the first two files upon installation in manner described in my first post and places the witp-AE.exe. file as the first file in C:\Matrix\War in the Pacific-Admiral's Edition.  And I do not know how to get at it in that spot to add the new command switches after .exe."
In short, how do I get to the code without using the particular method desribed in the readme file?
Thanks

The simplest way is to create a new shortcut on your desktop (I will assume you know how to do that).

Right click on the new shortcut and select "Properties".

Type in the information in a similar manner to below.

Note I have called this shortcut "WITP_AE Windowed" as I have another shortcut with fullscreen options set.

Your path to the executable file will probably be different to mine so you need to put the correct path name of your Admirals Edition install folder in the "Start in" box. The Inverted commas are needed if you have spaces in the pathname (as I have).

You cannot see the full width in my example but the "Target" box should be filled with the full path to the Admirals Edition executable file (inside inverted commas if there are spaces). The command line switches are added on the end of the line outside the inverted commas.

I hope you find this useful....

Hi Reg,
Thanks, the screen shot which really helped me to understand  the problem.  In particular, the "start in" box you show is very instructive.  My exe. file in not in any path that begins with "Program Files\Matrix."   My default installation process states ,as it proceeds, that it is installing WitP-AE in "C:\Matrix\witp (etc).  It doesn't come anywhere near the "program files" folder, as do nearly all other games, like HPS stuff.  And it it lies about the actual points of installation of some files.  It places the first  (maybe two) WitP-AE Files in a wholly different spot entitled "Documents and Settings\George Meyer.Law\Start Menu\Programs\War in the Pacific-Admiral's Edition." No other files from AE are install there.  Rather, they are all installed in C:\Matrix\Witp-AE (etc) starting with the .exe file in that path.  I think the D&S folders have something to do with the computer's placement of shortcuts on the desktop and entries in the start up menu for programs (there are four folders that start with some variation of "D&C\GM\startup menu", all of which include some reference to WitP.
So I think if I follow your advice and use a new start menu to "start in" "C:\Witp-Ae.exe."; I should be able to add the modifications to the executable file and thus the code.  But before I do that, I have one question.  What the hell is an "inverted comma?"  (I'm not a computer person; I'm a war gamer who happens to use computers to play war games, so I don't understand computer lingo.)  The marks to which you refer (") look to me like quotation marks. And I don't see any other key that would create the " appearance.  Is that the correct key to use? Or is there something I'm missing?
Anyway you have been of great help and I appreciate the time you have spent answering my questions.  I hope the great drought hasn't gotten you yet, my brother live lives in Brisbane and tells me they are hurting.  He had to sell his house boat because the lake in which it once floated literally dried up.
Regards

"Inverted Comma" is an apostrophe.
On US Keyboards it's the key left to Enter and contains Comma (,) and Inverted Comma (").
The inverted comma is activated by hitting Shift Key and the Comma Key simultanously.
Beware that this is ONLY true for US Keyboards.

Hi Reg,
Thanks, the screen shot which really helped me to understand  the problem.

You're welcome. [:)]

In particular, the "start in" box you show is very instructive.

This box sets the programs "current directory" (where the program is located) which helps the executable find the program data files.

AS I said, this is how I setup my system and yours is obviously different. Generally it is poor practice to install programs in C: drive root directory as over time this folder becomes very messy and it gets hard to find things. Not that this is wrong or won't work, it's just an efficiency thing.
Microsoft provides a standard folder called "C:\Program Files\" for installing programs though Matrix have chosen not to use this as default. Doesn't mean you can't change things as I have.

These files are the icons that appear when you press the "Start" button on the bottom left corner of the screen. By necessity they must be installed in this location.

No, your new shortcut Start in: box should contain "C:\Matrix\Witp-AE" (Inverted Commas are not required as there are no spaces but including them won't hurt) as this is the path to your folder containing the AE executable file.

Similarly your Target: box should read something like the following if I have read your installation correctly:
"C:\Matrix\Witp-AE\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -wd -deepColor -altFont -cpu1

Don't forget to set your command line switches (after the -) as desired for your setup.

I should be able to add the modifications to the executable file and thus the code.

Best of luck [:)]

Different terminology used in different countries, Welcome to the world wide internet community. [:D]

However Inverted Comma is a correct term for a double quotation mark. The Inverted Commas mark the line (INCLUDING spaces) as a quotation (a single object). Otherwise the computer will treat the spaces as a break within the line and not interpret it as you expect.

I was only up there a couple days ago and they got an inch or two of rain while I was there but yes things are tough all over. They have a absolutely huge dam (the Wivenhoe) and they had to open the flood gates only three years ago (meaning it was full) so I suspect they are not as frugal as they could be.....

This forum is a great place to as questions as everyone is friendly and there is always someone to pitch in if you have a problem. I hope this further information is of use to you.

The Inverted Comma is a quotation mark: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotation_mark

The Apostrophe as a punctuation mark is slightly different: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrophe

(I once had an English instructor to whom these things were important though I can't say anything rubbed off as I had to look this up....... )

This also works (which is why they call them command line switches) but why would you bother??? [&:]

Much easier to double click on an icon!! [:)]
