worr -> 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/27/2009 7:28:41 PM)

Any one have such a list? I waited til the 2nd update to launch into this game, but all my old habits from WITP are certainly in place! I read the manual a while back...but I'm looking for just the high points on things that people gloss over once they starting playing Admiral's edition.

witpqs -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/27/2009 7:48:19 PM)

I don't know of any list, but a huge one Search Arcs!

AE actually has them, and they are critically important. In WITP you set a percentage and somehow the search was 360 degrees. In AE, only a realistic arc is covered depending on how many aircraft are assigned. Read up on it and pay attention to it.

That's my nomination for inclusion on the list.

For the first few turns,

Getting used to the smaller hexes and thinking being 5-6 hexes away from an enemy carrier was safe

Shark7 -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/27/2009 8:01:33 PM)

The biggest problem I had was getting used to having to escort every amphibious operation with adequate ASuW support. With the reactions actually working, a surface unit can show up out of nowhere now.

Logistics, and troop limits.

Andy Mac -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/27/2009 8:44:49 PM)

1. Underestimating Ports
2. As japansese underestimating rate of advance of LCU's in North malaya
3. Overestimating how long its going to take for the Japanese to get up the coast once they are on the main road
4. Modes - being in strat mode when the shock attack comes in = bad thing
5. Deciding that actually that Regt prepped 100% for Canton can just go ahead and assault Baker instead without any new prep....
6. Allowing ships to get out of fuel in middle of Ocean....
7. Fighting tanks and arty on open ground without forts
8. Sending Zeros in on a 30,000 feet sweep
9. Thinking oh the lancer looks like a good fighter
10. Trying to CAP a TF with Wirraways

sven6345789 -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/27/2009 8:45:26 PM)

amphibious TF and transport TF are something different now
different troop modes (combat, move, rest...)

CarnageINC -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/27/2009 8:46:08 PM)

It's not so much a mistake but I always over look the cool little 'set patrol' opition. Wow, this took a load of micromanagement off my hands with having ASW and advance warning patrols. Big thanks to the developers [;)]

JuanG -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/27/2009 8:46:08 PM)

Ship rearm limits. This includes carriers too, but especially the heavier BB/BCs.

It hurts when you realise you have to go all the way back to Japan to rearm those 18in monster guns...

(Instead of filling em up at any level 3 port ala WitP)

sounds all well, except 8 and 10. [;)]

Zeros work just fine at 30000ft as they then bounce the enemy and tore them to pieces (AE becomes a "who gets higher wins" it seems) and Wirraways are rated as level bombers so they canīt do Cap.

thinking you have replacemengt aircraft in the pools
thinking you have PBY replacement aircraft in the pools

JohnDillworth -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/27/2009 10:55:25 PM)

As the Allies against the AI you will find that the AI does not always behave in a predictable, historical manner.
You have less of everything to start
Air crews are not as trained when they arrive
you have to plan way in advance for offensives
all of the Allies fuel is in the wrong places, and it is hard to stockpile enough for extended operations early in the war

Bullwinkle58 -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/27/2009 11:25:40 PM)

Submarines matter.

Oliver Heindorf -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/27/2009 11:59:44 PM)

My 2 cents :

1. Air Planes have now altitude bands. It' s VERY important to now them !
2. Port size is VERY important for rearming the battlewagons and for unloading/loading purposes.
3. Search Arcs needed to be set up properly.
4. Logistics are much different and more difficult.
5. Speed of build up bases drastically reduced. You need to select the bases more carefully for build up purposes.
6. Your Pilots mostly suck. You need to train them properly and you need to plan ahead for what purpose you need the selected air unit.

FAdmiral -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (12/28/2009 3:55:50 AM)

My biggest problem was all the new & extra ship types. The old WITP ones were changed about 80% and many new
ones were added. Some of them need supplies aboard to be able to do the job they were made for. If you want
to keep your fighting ships well supplied with ammo out in the front lines, make sure you have the proper support
ship handy. So I think if I had to say what is the biggest change in the 2 games, it would be LOGISTICS !!!!!!

Yeah logistics and way how support ships classes work seem to be area where this game has chanced a lot compared to WITP. New Logistics was area where I most struggled when playing my first AE scenario.

Everything mentioned above but the biggest for me is TF refueling, still not got to grips with it, but there again I don't think its working correctly.

Ditto,

Used to do this in UV as well!!!!

Submarines matter.

Here! Here!

And even more impressive ASW matters and is inadequate, even for the allies. The only subs I've lost so far were to striking mines in Singapore.

BBs gobble up fuel, like a fat man high on dope!

Shark -

While I (Japanese / Guad) have not lost any subs yet - one is limping home with 70% float damage. Each hit point, as best I can determine, generates a random number of damage points on float / sys / engine of the submarine. Even undetected (detection level zero prior to turn execution) the Allied ASW (in a TF with warships) is formidable - in my experience. If I recall correctly, Japanese ASW is initially set at .68% of norm. My answer to Allied subs is quantity - in Air and Naval assests, with a high level of experience (eventually). The few attacks executed thus far against the Allied subs (with one or two hit points inflicted on the Combat Report) have been disappointing. Still to early to tell, more game days are needed.

Mac

worr -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (1/8/2010 3:46:08 AM)

These are helpful!

SireChaos -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (1/8/2010 10:58:12 AM)

Another common mistake: forget that you now need air HQs for land-based air to use torpedoes.

And then: not paying attention to air unit withdrawal dates.

John Lansford -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (1/8/2010 12:03:41 PM)

1) Ports (rearming/repairing ships, basing restrictions)
2) Transport vs Amphibious TF's
3) Combat vs Strategic mode
4) Submarine combat
5) Withdrawal times for air and naval units
6) Supply
7) Amphibious assaults
8) CAP
9) Fuel vs oil
10) Mines

These are all different in AE vs WitP and require a change in thinking or you will get messed up really badly.

Sardaukar -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (1/8/2010 12:57:34 PM)

Thinking that 2 Indian Brigades can hold Port Blair against AI...

freeboy -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (1/8/2010 9:17:09 PM)

and my biggest headache, how do I get those ships to unload all the equipment?
And my second scratch both ends and think about it, how am I ever going to get enough planes with these limits per base size for my allied aircraft.. limits exist per size for planes AND groups, with some modifications for hq and support..

this game really makes you stay on top of logisticas.. OMFW![X(]

treespider -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (1/8/2010 9:21:05 PM)

Changing settings for TF's in transit to or from off-map boxes...just don't do it.[:-]

CapAndGown -> RE: 10 Most Common Mistakes coming over from WITP (1/8/2010 10:53:34 PM)

I think the biggest change that you need to be aware of is that now you need to train PILOTS, not air groups. You can train pilots for all kinds of things, like Ground Bombing, Naval Bombing, Naval Torpedo, ASW, Naval Search, etc. This is especially hard to think about since you can train up a pilot in one type of formation, and then transfer him to another type. So recon pilots could be trained to do Naval search. Or float plane pilots can be trained in either naval search or ASW. You need to think about which you want, because it would take a long time to do both.
