IS2m -> Misery in the Java Sea - No Ketza's!!!!! (12/30/2009 5:17:42 AM)

Hello everyone.

I am having trouble moving force Z in my PBEM game. My opponent grabbed Sinkawang on the first turn, and is establishing an airfield there. This hex is swarming with xAKs, PB's, xAP's, and other assorted juicy targets. The weather has been absolutely horrible, so his Betty's have not been able to fly (yet...), and the time has come for Force Z to make its presence felt. Force Z left Batavia on Dec 11, 1941 under the command of Admiral Phillips with orders to bombard Sinkawang. I set the TF to Direct route, and Absolute threat tolerance. TF speed is maximum, and it was not spotted.

Two turns later the TF has advanced a total of 4 hexes! [X(][X(][X(][X(]
The weather is clearing up, and the Japanese know that the TF is on its way. Time to retreat.....

My question is: Why won't those #%*!ing ships move their ***es!!!!!!

I checked the parking brakes and the warp field dampers for the entire fleet, all are set properly.

I don't mind when my opponent makes me look like an idiot, but I hate being embarrassed by a machine. Is this a bug?

Thanks in advance.

There are some issues with the full speed toggle, check the tech support forum for details.

But from the looks this could also be because the fleet is already on its return leg and did not find any opposition @ Singkawang.
Did you check the TF´s course after receiving the turn? Was it still otw to target or already set to arrive a Batavia?

Hello LoBaron

The TF was still en route to Sinkawang. I will check the tech support forum. Thanx

If you can´t find a solution there then simply do the following:

Set the TF to mission speed instead of full speed and "retirement allowed".
Surface combat TF´s set to mission speed
- try to arrive at night (so last leg is full speed anyway)
- perform surface combat
- retreat from hex at full speed

So you basically achieve them same you are intending to do with a more reliable speed setting.
Using full speed is not advisable anyway in most situations because you accumulate a lot of eng dmg.

If there's a bunch of juicy naval targets in the hex, you're making a mistake ordering a bombardment. With bombardment, your ships' primary orders are to shoot up the LCUs. Bombardment is nerfed enough in this game-that will likely be minimal return for the risk.

I strongly recommend sending your SCTF in with mission orders for surface combat (set your react distance accordingly). Odds are good that you'll either mix it up with surface naval combatants covering the invasion (good) or mix it up with a laden supply TF dropping off troops and supplies (better!).

Good luck.

You didn't happen to refuel the TF just before sending them off, did you? Low Ops points would slow it down too...

Cap Mandrake -> RE: Misery in the Java Sea - No Ketza's!!!!! (12/30/2009 6:08:02 PM)

If you have some Dutch DD's in the TF they may be slowing things down to refuel. Several of them have very low endurance better suited to the Long Beach to Catalina run or maybe a nice Rhine cruise.

Thanxs for the advice gents.
The TF does contain Dutch ships, but they are not refueling. The TF was short a few OPs points on the 11th, but had a full compliment on the 12th.

Chickenboy: I agree that Bombardment will mess up a surface combat group. However, the A/F is stacked with lots of nice, crunchy bombers..... I knew that I was taking a chance anyway.
The whole idea was to race in, blast the airfields, and sink a few ships on the way out.

If you want a bombardment TF to race in under the cover of darkness, bombard and run away before daylight then the TF should be set to "mission speed" (for a bombardment TF).
