And the colonel was only good because of the side he was on. Though it would've been interesting to see him on the other side.

Good point! I still liked him though! But I always had a soft spot for bad guys with personality!

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Avatar (1/18/2010 3:24:50 AM)

The colonel was played by Stephen Lang. I thought he did the best job of anyone in the movie.

Meanwhile, idiots are naming their children after Avatar characters and places.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Avatar (1/18/2010 7:19:01 AM)

Meanwhile idiots on the net are quoting The Sun!! [:'(]

Seriously, I don't know if you get The Sun in the States, but it's a tabloid piece of crap in this country with sensationalist "news" to grab readers. If you want to read The Sun, you have to take EVERYTHING with a MASSIVE punch of salt.

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Avatar (1/18/2010 3:38:23 PM)

What? You calling me what? [:@]

Seriously, I know about The Sun. But I thought the story was funny and belonged in the thread before the thread died. And I bet there is a small kernel of truth in the article, i.e., one or two kids named Pandora or for Avatar characters. That would not surprise me.

I would put nothing past young people today regarding the naming of children. As a high school teacher, the names I encounter today are often beyond bizarre.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Avatar (1/18/2010 3:48:24 PM)

I'll bet you're probably right too...there will be some poor kids named after the characters and have to go through life with the name hanging over them!

Like the Sun's (or Daily Mail's?) frontpage where they put a picture of the German national football team's coach on their frontpage and where they did some photoshop'ing and put some early WW1-helmet on his head? [:D]
I wish I could remember the headline, help me out, Judge !

(At a time when UK's tabloids insisted that "football's coming home" - and where then, during the 1996 EU championship's semi-final (vs Germany) Gascoigne [looking like a sandbag, he had overweight] sooo missed the deliveries harhar [:D] - I'm not a big football fan tho)

JudgeDredd -> RE: Avatar (1/18/2010 5:14:13 PM)

Probably something like "Hun - Nil to England"

GoodGuy -> RE: Avatar (1/18/2010 5:24:28 PM)

Huns are coming?

Surrender, Fritz ! ?

lol

We got something worse than that. It's called "MSNBC". It's absolute rubbish passed off as "news".

I do believe you're talking about Fox News.

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Avatar (1/18/2010 11:20:59 PM)

Actually it would be both.

Twotribes -> RE: Avatar (1/19/2010 12:17:48 AM)

Ever notice the people that complain about Fox have never actually watched it?

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Avatar (1/19/2010 12:25:46 AM)

The best way is to watch all the big three, Fox, MSNBC, CNN. You often get three different versions of the same thing. And the truth is in there somewhere.

My favorite show on any of the three is Morning Joe on MSNBC. They give you something missing most of the time -- some balance.

And I say this as someone with moderate to conservative views; my favorite show on any of the big three cable news networks is on MSNBC.

I saw the 3D version last week.  Worth seeing but still.. meh.

Nice and flashy.  I'd second the Pocahontas reference.  The plot is just another rehash for the most part.  Add a dash of politics and some shallow characters, you're good to go.

My thoughts also. Nice special effects, raises the bar in that respect. Otherwise it is sort of " Dances With Wolves in outer space ". Tired plot, same 'ole villans , etc.

htuna -> RE: Avatar (1/19/2010 12:54:06 AM)

Just got back from seeing it with my ten year old.. we both loved it!!!

bairdlander2 -> RE: Avatar (1/19/2010 1:45:12 AM)

I read online the other day some Americans are talking about deporting Cameron back to Canada because of the portrayal of US marines and this makes Cameron a "traitor" to USA.What a load of crap.Maybe they should bring back "freedom fries".

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Avatar (1/19/2010 3:09:35 AM)

In America today a half dozen people can get together and make a pronouncement and it will make the national news for 30 seconds.

sabre1 -> RE: Avatar (1/19/2010 1:08:14 PM)

I love freedom fries. If Slick Wilhelm is nice, I might even share some.

How do YOU know I've never watched it? I actuallly have.

I even spent FIVE weeks in upstate New York at KAPL (Knoll's Atomic Power Labratory) where all they had in the canteen ALL day was FOX News, pal. I work on a Federal facility. ALL they show on the TV's, in the various common areas, is Fox News.

Yeah, fortunately all three networks are bunched real close on my cable package (Ch's 44, 47, and 48) so it's really easy to switch around.

You bring up a good point. I watch Morning Joe, as well. Sometime's all of it, as it starts at 0300 local time, so catching the whole show doesn't work for me most times. I usually catch at least half of it. It seems to be the most balanced of any of the 'guest driven' talk shows on cable.

Yeah, I was calling it 'Dances with Aliens' then I saw a spoof of the Pocahontas storyline with the names John Smith crossed out and replaced by Jake Sully and Pocahantas by Neytiri.

Doggie -> RE: Avatar (1/19/2010 4:16:56 PM)

It's Dances with Smurfs.[8|]

JudgeDredd -> RE: Avatar (1/19/2010 4:43:28 PM)

I see everybody's point - however, I must be able to detach more than others. I've seen Dances with Wolves and I've seen Pocahontas - and all I saw when I went to see Avatar was a great story, well told, great graphics, good cinematography and great casting...all well produced. [&o]

Maybe I'm just one of those low life plebs that can be easily entertained. [:'(]

There are also some remarkable similarities to "Ferngully: The Last Rainforest", an animated film with Robin Williams as the voice of a mentally unstable bat.[:D]

Evolution in action, survival of those suitable for the twenty century 3d environment LOL

Capt. Harlock -> RE: Avatar (1/20/2010 1:35:40 AM)

Late-breaking news is that the Chinese have pulled all the 2-D showings of the film in their country. This effectively censors it, since there aren't all that many 3-D theaters in China.

Maybe it's not such a bad flick after all . . .[sm=00000613.gif]

If you ever needed confirmation that others don't detach as much, it's in today's letters to the editor of the L. A. Times:

The comparison to Afghanistan is especially troubling and wrong: the place is resource-poor, and we *do* have things the Afghans want, like roads and schools. Which is why the Taliban are mining the roads and blowing up the schools.
