Happy New Year Everybody

A few people have sent me pm’s asking whether or not I intend to comment on my ongoing PBEM match with Undercovergeek. In thinking it over, I wouldn’t mind exchanging some views with other AFBs about my game and frankly, wouldn’t mind some advice from more experienced Allied players. So I’ll post some commentary here occasionally and would invite comments on my gameplay and strategy.

My comments will really not focus much on combat reports but I will obviously go into detail where battles and operations influence my strategy. I trust that Undercovergeek has described his HI invasion in some detail, so I will assume you are up to date in our game. The HI invasion was really no surprise to me as he did it to me in a previous PBEM (stock WITP) and I could see where he was headed by his early movements and emphasis on the Central Pacific, plus some intelligence reports which placed various ground units on transports bound for Midway, Wake, and eventually Hawaii.

In any game I play, PBEM, AI, whatever, I always send as much as I can from the West coast to Hawaii as quickly as possible. This game was no different, and while I did not have a chance to send as much as I would have liked before he pulled the HI trigger, I did manage to send in additional supplies and troops including the 8th Marines to Lahaina, and various infantry, engineers, and other support units to Oahu. He got more than He bargained for with Lahiana and had to commit (I’m guessing) more than he wanted to there before the Americans finally surrendered. No doubt he has told you about the disastrous ground assault he launched recently on Oahu which was repelled with minor casualties on my side (only 800 casualties to his 11k + with hundreds of squads destroyed. Not boasting here, but he has been chewed up so far trying to crack the Oahu nut. I don’t know how many transports he has lost trying to land more troops and resupply Oahu, but he’s been getting transports shot up badly every day, and his BBs can’t seem to suppress my shore batteries. Likewise although he has achieved air superiority over the HI, my bombers are still picking off the occasional transport, and he has not been able to wear down my Oahu troops with air bombardment. So I hold on in Oahu with over 110k supply which I know will not last forever…the 24th and 25th divisions – fully reconstituted - have given him all he can handle. I think he has (had) the equivalent of about 4 infantry divisions besieging me there. How long it will take him to recover from the failed assault, I do not know, but it had to put a major dent in his AV on the island.

At present I have no resupply convoys forming up for HI. His airpower with LBA in Hawaii and KB nearby is overwhelming. I may have to change my mind about that soon, but for now I will wait and see in the aftermath of the last ground battle. If the situation begins to grow desperate for me there, we shall see.

More in my next post about my situation elsewhere but as you might guess I have been working on building up in other areas (slowly) as he remains locked onto Oahu.

Ah, so he did it to you before so it wasn't too much of a surprise. I would have been blown away by the attack.

I'm wondering what your follow-on plans are - i.e., what will you do:

1 - If he succeeds and captures Pearl?

2 - If he fails to capture Pearl and you have a stalemate with his troops on the island?

3 - If he fails to capture Pearl and pulls out his troops but keeps the other HI bases?

He hasn't commented on the last battle yet, the better because this means I won't have any knowledge about the actual effects on his forces.

In another AAR, a siege on Noumea, in which the defence consisted of 1 division and some small units, 3 divisions failed to take the island for over a month. Only when a fourth division was brought in, the defences were finally broken. You have 2 divisions and many stronger miscellaneous units, so I'm guessing he'll have a hard time cracking this with only 4 divisions. The failed shock attack certainly shows this. The large amount of destroyed squads is great news for you, he can not recover that while he hasn't taken the island.

IMHO, you now have to commit your carriers where the KB is not. He has two important offences going, far away from each other (HI and DEI) and KB can be in only one of these positions, this gives you options. Certainly if KB reappears around PH, you have a great opportunity to strike whatever surface forces and transports he has in the DEI. Do take his LBA into consideration if you do, but you know a lot of his zeroes and other air units are in the islands around PH. If you couple great losses in the DEI with the losses he is taking around PH, he'll have a hard time shipping everything he needs to ship.

Another hint is not to keep your CAP up every day. Give you pilots a chance to recover a bit. One plane CAP every day just gets blown out of the sky, 10 planes CAP once every few days may actually do something.

ABD123: I have played the game so far on the assumption that Hawaii will fall completely. As you know that scenario presents a real dilemma for the Allied side and you can imagine what a pain in the ass it is if he takes it all (which he did against me previously). Having the ideal forward base and staging area under Japanese occupation changes the whole flow of the war.

So here’s what I am trying to do about it…Although I know that Alaska is not a viable route to launch a major operation towards Japan, I still think that a beefed up presence there can make a lot of mischief for Undercovergeek. It is a place from which I can launch raids, and if I take bases far enough forward, I can force him to have to commit up there.

More importantly, I am trying to hold and secure a route to Australia from the US West coast even with Hawaii gone, and will attempt to guard my communications. So I have already garrisoned Christmas Island and I have the Americal Division (full) en route to Suva. In the Line Islands he has taken Palmyra, but I think it is weakly garrisoned and my fighter cover is up at Christmas (one squadron of P-400s, it’s not much but it’s a start). I will fight it out here while he is tied down in HI and have started moving more infantry and engineers in to Christmas I. Though his mini-KB just shot up one of my inbound convoys for Christmas, my INF made it ashore safely. Next, I will look for another ‘dot’ (Malden, Starbuck, Penrhyn, etc.) island further south and east to develop in order to to guard the approaches to Pago Pago. I already have lots of fighter cover in Pago Pago and Suva (F4Fs and P-40s). From there we go: Noumea-Brisbane, and that’s my lifeline. I will focus on my Australia lifeline for now and reinforce HI if the opportunity/need arises.
In the PI I am trying to make headaches for him. I am using my air cover to harass his ground troops but my small group of Hudsons cannot hit the broadside of a barn and have not touched his shipping. He does not have much on the ground it seems in Luzon, so after my initial ‘Sir Robin’ retreat to Manila, I am now gradually fanning out to the north and have retaken some bases though I probably wont go too much farther right now.

In the West I have diverted the 6’th Division AIF to India. I know Burma is a trap but I want to take no chances here and if I can push him back and get some air power projected later into Malaya and Indochina, I could make things very unpleasant for him.

I expect the DEI to fall soon – Celebes and Borneo are Gone – I expect the hammer to fall on Java next and Sumatra afterward. In Java, I am holed up at Soerbaja with just about everything of value that I have on the island. My only goal here is to create as much attrition as I can and I expect that concentration and a siege in an urban location is my best bet.

Those are my immediate goals. I have not yet decided from which direction I will go on the strategic offensive when the time comes (whenever that is) but he’s done nothing in the Solomons, Eastern New Guinea, or New Hebrides – New Caledonia (he can’t be everywhere at once). So I might have an opportunity to get a jump start from that direction. Already I have lots of assets at Port Moresby including bombers and about 250 AV.

Smeulders: Agree with you completely. I’ve already sent Saratoga into these waters and raised a bit of havoc with his shipping. In addition I had a British TF of light cruisers and destroyers do a LOT of damage to his shipping, particularly around north shore of Borneo and later Celebes/Menando before a lot of those nasty Nells showed their ugly faces in that area. They must have surprised and sunk 20-30 xAKs in the DEI in four or five separate actions. These eventually got shot up but now I have a strong SAG moving up towards Darwin to hopefully create more havoc. In addition Saratoga had a short refit with her group at Sydney and is now moving north, though for some reason when I reformed the TF Halsey no longer seems to be available – why I do not know – and I had to use Aubrey Fitch (Spruance is at sea with my other carriers guarding a troop convoy headed to the South Pacific).
I took your advice about the CAP at PH and have stood down the few fighters that I have there. Maybe I can put up a surprise for some unwary and unescorted bombers in a turn or two.

You've got me wondering if a Burma defence isn't feasible in this game. If he takes the Hawaiian islands, he'll have number of divisions and many planes tied down in it's defence. This will allow you to at least seriously slow down any attack here and maybe even keep it.

Keeping the route from the WC to Australia open without Hawaii seems dangerous, he'll have quite some chance to raid into your shipping lanes. ATM you probably don't have to worry too much about this though and reinforcing SoPac now isn't a bad idea. Later on it can be supported from Australia (which in turn can be supplied from CT). Later on, any offensives from SoPac are good, you're threathening the long route between the two HI (home and Hawaiian), which he'll need to hold. Another good offensive is from Burma, he will always have to keep assets far in the pacific to defend the HI so this will be weaker then normal, if you also manage to hold Burma for a jump-off point....

Smeulders: I was thinking the same thing about Burma but I am of two minds about it. On the one hand I am wondering how much he has withdrawn from Southeast Asia to support his adventures elsewhere and with the excellent Aussie 6'th division recently landed at Calcutta, I will begin to probe southwards right away with to see what I can find out about his strength, while trying to avoid a major battle for now. On the other hand I am fearful of overcommitting here and getting into a jungle slugging match/stalemate with more of my infantry than I would like that might be needed in Oz or SoPac. I won't be sending much else to this theater of my arriving reinforcements for now. I know some people would probably call me crazy for sending the 6th division there and not to Oz.

On the Australia communications, I know that it is a long exposed line to try to hold with HI gone. On the other hand if I can establish myself at some of the places I mentioned I will be on his flank to HI and can launch my own raids against his shipping in the Central Pacific. In addition if the strategy works it might be a launching point for future operations against the central Pacific Islands like Tarawa, Makin, etc.

If the strategy fails, and I end up losing carriers and other assets trying to hold it open then I will be forced to supply and reinforce OZ and the remainder of the PAcific through the 'back door' of Abadan - Aden - Colombo - Perth. That is a very ugly prospect.

Have you considered Cristobal, the other back door? With a base that close to the left coast, he can really harass your logistics operations there. Seems like it would be a safer (albeit time consuming to setup)way to resupply your proposed strong points at Samoa, Fiji, and New Caledonia.

You might have more assets to fight with if they aren't tied up protecting a lot of transport capacity and take the fight to his supply line.

IRL, Bora Bora was one of the first bases to be established as a refueling station once hostilities started. Seems like worst case scenario planning, but then you are faced with the worst case scenario they never faced. And it's what you'll be stuck with anyway if he makes a serious play for Christmas.

Anyway, nice to see that you are starting an AAR.

Central Blue: That's an intersting thought about the Canal Zone. I'll need to see what I am doing there for expansion of port and airfield facilities. I think I have them building, but I will see to it. Meantime I will look into some base force units and enginners that might be used for building a base in the Marquesas or the Society Islands. The 'straight line' across from Cristobal might be the better choice, thanks.

Be careful about committing too many Aussie units to battle. They and the British, dont get much in the way of reinforcements therefore a savaged division will rebuild very slowly. I am sending the Indians against the Japanese in Burma with some success. I use the Aussie and Brits to secure the flanks and supply paths.

In general it's been pretty quiet the last few turns - he has not done anything at Pearl except a bombardment attack since the last assault. My convoys with troops continue plodding on toward the South Pacific. At Noumea, a troop convoy arrived today (Feb 12th)with base forces and I am slowly building up my AV there. Just ferried in a B-26 group from Oz to Noumea and will be bringing in fighters soon. Pago Pago is the weakest right now but I have a troop convoy inbound. Americal Division is still far away - I am keeping that convoy well away from Hawaii as it transits Southbound, so it is taking the long route. Slowly, my southern bases are starting to build up - as mentioned, I see keeping my communications open to Australia as job #1.

China is quiet right now. He just took Pegu in Burma. I have evacuated Rangoon but I have considerable strength dug in at the two towns north of there Prome and Toungoo - he will need to put more strength together than what he has at Pegu right now to move me out of there. I have also started bombing Pegu with my Blenheims and my Calcullat-based B-17s that I evacuated from the Phillipines.

In the Phillipines, the 4th Marines just retook San Fernando - I really don't know what he's doing in Northern Luzon - it almost looks like he has abandoned much of it, but I will continue to probe without (hopefully) overextending and exposing myself to being cut off and isolated. Supplies in Luzon will become an issue soon. I need to use my limited air assets here to do some better recon of the island.

In the DEI he has landed on Timor - I was wrong about Java - I thought that would be next. This makes me wonder about whether or not he's thinking about an adventure in Northern Oz and I am very ill prepared for that it Geek is going there next. Howver with all of the assets he has comitted to HI, I think he would be crazy to tryan Australian invasion. Still...he is at Lautem in what I estimate to be division strength and with considerable naval support including some heavy units.

I am unsure as to KB's whereabouts. I think he may have withdrawn to Japan to refit and restock his airgroups.

Well I found KB! Had a surface engagement with it south of Timor. My much smaller TF was almost completely wiped out but we got some hits on 3 cvs and a CVL. Couple are on fire if I can believe the combat report.

Sorry so long since I updated. Major events are in progress...

We have now reached February 25th ’42 in our match and ‘Geek has begun to evacuate Oahu. He had launched another disastrous ground assault (his second) and got another bloody nose – then we had two of his BBs getting shot up by the Oahu shore batteries and I think that was it for him…he started pulling out right after that. I consider this a major victory. Any troops he’s pulling out will not be worth a damn for quite a while and will need rest, refit, and replacements.

Better yet, supply in Oahu has surpassed 120k and is growing as he has disengaged. Didn’t expect that, and don’t know where the supplies are coming from or why there are growing (bug)? Does Oahu generate its own supplies?

I am starting to get some airframe replacements to start slowly building up some of my Oahu squadrons, both fighters and bombers. My groups there are all in stand down to rest and refit. In the next few days, I expect to put up 25-30 fighters on cap and see how I do against the considerable number of Zeroes he keeps sweeping with. I don’t expect any miracles with that, and will manage my planes and pilots carefully here.

I do not know what he is doing in the other Islands. Recon shows transports at Lahaina and the Big Island. He may be pulling out from there too. If he’s not pulling out completely, the locus of the war will now surely be at Hawaii. That could become our Guadalacanal/battle of attrition. The question for me will become when to send in a relief/reinforcement convoy. I have one loaded up at SF with a possible 2 CV covering force, but have not decided to send it to PH. We shall see. I think I have hurt his bombers badly in Hawaii. PH was an absolute flak hell for him and he paid dearly there. IJN/IJA LBA numbers in Hawaii may be low enough for me to consider a relief effort now with the carriers.

The increasing supply is something I've noticed while running some test on supply usage as well. I think it has something to do with him not having enough troops left to store his supplies, so you are 'capturing' his supply dumps.

I’m still thinking through some of what ‘Geeks evacuation of Oahu means in the bigger strategic picture, but it is beginning to dawn on me just what the implications are and the full dimensions of what I consider to be a major victory for the Allies. If I were playing the Japanese I would not want a protracted struggle for Hawaii. He was by definition already stretched thin on the operation, and to try to carry on a months long battle in Hawaii, far from his supply, would stretch his resources even more and leave yet more of the map exposed to Allied counterstrokes. Plus Oahu is where the VPs are, and if you can’t take it, well… I think he had one shot at this and he needed to capture PH. I would pull out completely were I him.

Now with his losses in Hawaii and the huge commitment of his forces to support those operations, he has surely got his hands full elsewhere. The Phillipines are far from conquered. Singapore still stands. He’s done very little in the South Pacific, Solomons, or New Guinea, though I am seeing more activity in that direction lately. He’s not overwhelming me in China though he has made some progress there lately. India is quiet. In the meantime I get stronger every day, though admittedly things will look better in September or October.

You really should tell him that the extra supply he dumped at Oahu ends up in your base....While it doesnt matter here if he tried a seige it would be seen as a broken mechanic.

It most likely only ended up with Yank because he was seriously lowering his numbers of troops. I'd have to look at my test scenario again, but I think units can store many times their "supply required", it's unlikely that you'll ever throw enough supplies onto an island you're sieging to go above that limit, unless you're taking massive casualties or are evacuating. That is, if that limit really exists and it isn't something like 'when you destroy squads/ squads get evacuated in a unit that was storing too much supplies, you capture these', if that is the rule, simply bringing in supplies will never give it to your opponent, unless you're taking large casualties.

For normal landings yes but if i was seiging PH i would dump several months worth of supply there as you dont want AKs to get hit by CDs again..

It is now 3/5/42 and I am still not able to determine exactly what ‘Geek is up to in Hawaii. I have stepped up recon over the big island and Lahaina and there appear to be lots of troops, and lots of transports, but I cannot tell if they are coming or going. Troops levels do not appear to be shrinking at Lahaina so, perhaps he intends to hold on to everything he’s got and put up an air-sea blockade around Oahu to starve me out in the long-term now that he has withdrawn his ground units. And it would take a while to starve me as I have 120k + in supplies right now. As noted in a previous post, hanging around in Hawaii would not be my strategic choice at this point if I were the Japanese player, but if this is what he’s doing so be it.

I had sent in a two carrier strike force to poke around Oahu and see what I could find, and on the last turn they tangled with the Japanese. There were several LBA strikes from Lahaina that sank a couple of my CLs but did not scratch the paint on the CVs. My CVs got off 2 strikes and roughed up 6 or 7 xAKs and 2 large AOs at Lahaina. I think most or all will sink. My second strike lost coordination with its fighter cover and my SBDs and pilots took a real beating without scoring any hits. It will take me sometime to recover from the losses in planes and pilots. Also an xAK convoy I had sent to Oahu with about 50k supplies got shot up and a few transports lost. I have turned these around back to SF along with my carriers. All appear to be out of harm’s way from LBA now.

Not sure what next steps are. Americal is uloading at Pago Pago and I have a singe CV TF covering that. Once completed I may send her back into the Timor area, as the Japanese have been landing there and I don’t think their air power is very strong in that region right now. Have to be careful of KB.

Will post again in a few days. No plans to monkey around with Hawaii right now. I am withdrawing naval units for the time being while I consider my next move.
