rsunley -> Can no longer load saved game (1/3/2010 2:09:11 PM)

I am running v1.60. I managed to defeat the UK and USSR playing the Axis by 1944, but now I cannot load my saved game any more .. I get CTD instead, even after a reboot. I did post about this in the general forum area but have since found this tech support section. All previous saved games have loaded fine since I started playing the game 2 months ago.

Any ideas? I would like to complete world domination if I can. I have other comments about the game which I wont repost here but are in the other area under 'Some general discussion about this game'. Some of the points do appear to be bugs though.

Regards
Ralph

Ralph,

The file ConsoleOut.Txt in the ToW folder can be opened in Notepad, and the last lines will give an indication of the problem.  If you post those last lines here it will help in the analysis.  When it comes time to get a fix the saved folder should be zipped and placed up here to allow working on.

Yours in the quest for domination,

Chuck

Hi Chuck

Thanks for the reply. I do not have the file here with me at the moment but I will get the data posted here as soon as I can

Hello again

I had a look at the consoleout.txt file and used it to diagnose the issue - a corrupt character in the land_units.csv file. I fixed this up and the saved game loaded! Thanks for the tip.

Alas, not too much later I had another CTD after setting some convoys, but I believe that has already been reported.

Kind Regards
Ralph

In diagnosing convoy issues the problem is often that one end is not a port.  Tallin and Hamburg can be problematic.

That's weird. Are you saying that in the convoy screen that not all of the ports shown are in fact ports?

cpdeyoung -> RE: Can no longer load saved game (1/6/2010 2:42:22 AM)

Tallin is a bit flakey, and Hamburg is inland, and depends on clear zoc between the port and sea.

I think both work now, but there were issues.  If Ralph looks at ConsoleOut again he should get an idea where the proble is.

Hi Chuck, I am having similar issues loading a saved game. I am playing on the 1.60 version. My game was working fine for the last few weeks, but today it will not load. I have checked the ConsoleOut.txt file, and here are the last three lines (where it appears the problem is):

Loading 32 Armoured Corps into HMS Anson
32 Armoured Corps is supposed to be loaded into HMS Anson
But this isn't transport or amphib. fleet. Data integrity error! Game terminated.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks for your help!

Dave,

The Anson would appreciate all those extra 3" guns, but I guess they really should go to a transport!

Before we do any editing please make a backup of "naval_units.csv".

The problem almost certainly is that "Anson" and a transport share the same unit ID.  Open your naval_units.csv in Notepad, better for this task than Excel.  Search for "Anson" and note the Unit ID in the first column.  Let's say it is "25", now look for another unit ID of "25".  I suspect you will find one.

If you did then go to the bottom of the file and see the largest ID.  Let's suppose it is "40".  You will want to change Anson's unit ID to "41", leaving the transport as the only "25" unit ID.

Save the file and see if it works for you.  I hope it does.

Chuck, thanks for the reply. I figured that, barring some sort of Dunkirk-type shenanigans, it seemed odd that an armored unit was trying to load up on non-transport! I'm currently at work but I'll follow your instructions when I get back home. I certainly hope this works too, since I am really enjoying this game and would hate to have to start all over... I'll let you know if your fix works. Thanks again!

cpdeyoung -> RE: Can no longer load saved game (1/14/2010 4:15:41 AM)

Dave,

It can't hurt to cut the Anson line out, and paste it at the end of the file.  I don't know that this is necessary, but the files seems ordered by unit ID so I think I would.

In other words, after changing the Anson's ID to "41", move the whole line below the ship with ID "40".  You will remember that the real numbers will likely be different in your case.

SUCCESS!! Chuck, the problem was exactly as you described. A few seconds' worth of text editing, and my save game is saved! Thank you so much, sir, I appreciate it! [&o]

Good deal!  You have put a lot of effort into the game over these weeks and it is great to get to continue it.

It is frustrating that things can go wrong, but the developers will jump in and work with you to fix games that are messed up.  When I see a problem I recognize I try and help, but they have resources I do not have.

A copy of ConsoleOut.txt and a zip of the saved game, or "Autosave" are the best material to allow other players, or the developers to help.  Don't give up on a good game without coming to the forum for help.

My thoughts exactly, Chuck. I've been playing ToW for nearly a month now (started in Sept. 1939, currently on Aug. 1, 1942 turn) and I have just had a blast with this game, warts and all... I can stomach growing pains in a game (AI especially), but not being able to load my saved game was a potential deal-breaker. Thankfully I found this topic in the forums and was able to get a quick, knowledgeable response. Thanks again!
