I've been playing FOF for about two years. It has a steep learning curve, but it is a great game. I notice that Crown of Glory evolved into a Crown of Glory 2--a much superior game. I hope to see a FOF 2.

I would like to see some changed. On the strategic level I would like to see more areas--the area between Washington and Richmond is especially constricted.

randybrandt@yahoo.co -> RE: forge of freedom 2? (1/4/2010 6:41:28 PM)

On the tactical level I would like to see the map expanded.  Battles between very large armies seem to be constricted.  I would also like to see elvevation handled differentlly.

Thanks for your comments. We would like to produce an expansion or a FOF2, but have no definite plans at the moment. You're not the first to make those suggestions, so we will definitely look seriously at those issues if we do begin such a project.

I recently purchased this electronic d/l.  Then, I went to my friendly neighborhood FEDEX Kinkos to have the manual printed, for $30.

I really like the game but I can't imagine making another purchase unless Matrix reconsiders there pricing structure.  Seems like they just shifted all the costs of producing the manual onto the consumer while keeping the price of the games the same.  I am not complaining because I knew when I made the purchase that I was going to have to pay to have the manual printed, but in hindsight, $80 to enjoy a pc wargame is just too much.

For $10 extra you would have gotten both a CD AND rules. Why on earth did you give away $30 to get just the rules?

Good Hunting.

Yeah, I know I overpaid to get the manual printed. I wasn't sure that the hard copy would come with a manual. In fact, I purchased Crown of Glory and it didn't come with a manual so it just isn't clear and I would say that Matrix isn't making a great effort to let buyers know exactly what the deal is.

Still, a really good game but I would just think two or three times before I got in this situation again.

Sorry things weren't clear enough. I haven't visited the Matrix "store" in a while. Is it not clearly written that physical copies come with a manual? If not, I'll pass this along to someone at Matrix.

If you are referring to the original "Crown of Glory" and not the "Emperor's Edition" that was released a year ago, what happened is that at the time Matrix did not include manuals with all physical copies, but began to do so later on. (If memory serves, FOF was the first game for which Matrix provided a printed manual.)

I would add my voice to a newer updated version, expansion of FoF2.

Just going by total posts and comments FoF is as popular or possibly more popular than Cog2. I know that is not a very scientific way of calculating interest, but it is the best I have to go on.

I'm not asking for any specifics but how closely do total posts and comments mirror sales to the extent of ratio of Total posts and comments/sales, if I may be so bold to ask.

I'll understand if you don't even want to say that much.

Gil R. -> RE: forge of freedom 2? (4/13/2010 3:09:24 AM)

Well, FOF has been out longer than COG:EE, so it has more posts partly for that reason, but it is the more popular game of the two, as you rightly suspect. I'd attribute this simply to the Civil War being more popular than Napoleonics. That's an interesting question about the ratios of forum posts and sales, and now you've got me curious. I'll have to ask EricBabe, who keeps track of our sales figures. I can't promise that I'll be able to share the answer, though.

We very much would like to do a FOF2, but it's going to have to wait since -- and it seems appropriate to divulge this information on the anniversary of the shelling of Fort Sumter -- we will first be producing a series of releases using a greatly modified version of the FOF tactical engine for historical battles, starting with 1st Bull Run and a few other early battles. More on this soon...

hgilmer3 -> RE: forge of freedom 2? (4/17/2010 3:12:45 PM)

Well, it seems logical that the more sales the more posts except for as you have mentioned the time it was released.  The only other thing that might affect the # of posts is if there were a big problem with a game, but we all know that that has not been a problem here.

I somewhat based my purchases by number of posts to determine the best games when I first came here, because I was a relatively late comer to the Matrix experience.

Kielec -> RE: forge of freedom 2? (4/17/2010 4:32:20 PM)

Another "popular" post number booster would be a lame manual. Still another, just a steep learning curve.

Allow me to insist that FoF has both...

I have a feeling that in these two respects CoG/E is not much different, being apparently a simmilar game, but I never saw it so cannot have an opinion.

Of the flurry of Civil War games that came out all at once, this was the best (potentially) by far.

I'd love to see a sequel that relied less on AI "enhancements" for balance and avoided the CSA holing up in Richmond problem.

Other than that, frankly, this was pretty much the perfect game. I wouldn't want to see anything other than tweaks to auto battle results (fewer brigades surrendering) and more territories between Richmond and Washington.

janh -> RE: forge of freedom 2? (6/30/2010 2:13:37 PM)

A somewhat more flexible AI, that would form lines in detailed combat more in accordance with the terrain (like a Gettysburg or Chancellorsville fishhook instead of a mostly straight line accross the monitor). More realistic detailed combat maps that have a more real road-net, dwellings and see AI put importance to holding/taking those...

edit: can the roadnet in detailed combat be modded? I already gave all provinces more probabilty to fight in dense popolous and road terrains, but still rarely get interesting roads maps.

Gil R. -> RE: forge of freedom 2? (7/1/2010 12:34:12 AM)

Roads are drawn using some sort of algorithm I won't pretend I understand. I can see how we might shoot for more variation in how roads are drawn. Please add this to the Wish List thread. (I don't think anyone has previously made the suggestion.)
