Ulrik -> Minedogs (7/1/2002 2:28:37 AM)

I found the lill' minedogs in the Norwegian oob (still called that??) of dec. 1949... and I wonder; How can I make them available? I can't choose them in edit mode...

I would also be interested in all historical aspects of this "unit"... did anyone actually use minedogs??

Well, as usuall, all replies are apreciated!

Hi Ulrik,

I'll hold on the scenario making q...

The subject of Minedogs pops up every now and then. AFAIK, they were used primarily by the Russians. I haven't seen any records of battlefield use, or effectiveness. "Rumors" say that dogs are extremely vulnerable to MG fire, and since they were trained on Russian tanks, they preferred to run under those instead of the intended Panzers. :rolleyes:

I can neither deny nor confirm the accuracy of this. :cool:

Hmm... interesting anecdote indeed :) ... they must be damned dangerous in the forest... or at night?? ...

kevsharr -> (7/1/2002 6:09:29 AM)

The Russian's would starve the dog's then throw meat under a tank,in battle they would attach a landmine equiped with a grazing fuse and let them loose on the battlefield,unfortunatly they could'nt differentiate between freindly and enemy tank's, showing no political leaning's whatsoever

Grenadier -> (7/1/2002 12:12:49 PM)

The minedogs were created for Lost Victories and the entire history of their deployment is in the LV documents

I think the minedogs really defeat their own purpose of helping the Russkies. Why would you set loose a bunch of dogs that have a 50% chance of bombing one of your own tanks!?

Belisarius -> (7/2/2002 2:28:42 AM)

I think they found that out as well... the hard way :p

Really, the chance of a self-mining must've been even more than 50%?! What does dog see first; Russki tank or Kraut tank?

Gary Tatro -> Depends on how they are used. (7/2/2002 3:08:27 AM)

If you have recon infantry using them in front of the troops with tank support in the rear. I could see a viable use and solotion to the problem or inflicting casualties on your forces. Also if there was a point and command process in the training. You would have much more control over the dogs.

Grenadier -> (7/2/2002 4:19:21 AM)

The Russians weren't stupid. They did not use the dogs when their own vehicles were in the area. They used them in independant units at the front lines and only if there were german armored or mechanized forces in the area. They were very successful at first and soon the Germans were shooting every dog in sight.
