Do they ever get a hit? I know the chances should be greatly reduced, but I cannot recall ever seeing a hit when launched from these directions, even against slow transports.

wow, twice in a week folks asked this, they launch as ships turn to negate the turn, although agaisnt slow merchies I think it is an in game redundancy but a real life tactic used against faster naval vesels.. think a torpedo goes just a littel faster than its target, so if you do not want your enemy to simply turn towrd your torps causing them to mis you do front and sides

I would imagine anyone in command of a vessel in a potential combat zone has burned into their skulls mucho contours of equal probability.

The historical tactic was to approach from ahead, but to drop from ahead and to the side of the target. Approaching from roughly ahead should reduce the the anti-aircraft fire and time to close in. Then the planes should split and attack from both sides
