bradfordkay -> Air search - is this normal? (1/6/2010 4:25:56 AM)

In my latest turn of my PBEM, I have a "TF sighting" by one of my PBY-4s at a location substantially outside of the specified search arcs.

I didn't know that in the game there was any naval search being performed outside of the planned search areas. There are no squadrons in range that are set to random search arcs - so it has to be from one that was not set to cover the location where this sighting was made.

Does FOW include search aircraft reporting incorrect coordinates? Does it include the possibility of search aircraft getting lost but still reporting sighted TFs?

I realize that the whole thing (including the "Sighted TF") could be an FOW fabrication but I just found this somewhat odd...

treespider -> RE: Air search - is this normal? (1/6/2010 4:28:48 AM)

Need more info...

What is the range to the sighting from the PBY-4?

IIRC within 4 hexes aircraft still cover 360 degrees...regardless of arc settings.

bradfordkay -> RE: Air search - is this normal? (1/6/2010 4:33:35 AM)

The range was eighteen hexes from the squadron's base. The sighting was about 50 degrees outside of the specified arc.

Should I move this to the support forum and post a save?

I assume thats a rhetorical question...otherwise, no I would let it sit here and collect dust.

Or it could be FoW...[;)]

I am treating it as FOW, but that pilot is getting grilled by both the squadron intelligence officer and the CO - wanting to know why he was so far off course!

I am reviving this three-month-old thread. Can we get some clarification on the four-hex rule? Do aircraft have to be set to Naval Search in order to search four hexes out for 360 degrees around the hex? Or does just having naval search aircraft in the hex make it happned?

Nomad -> RE: Air search - is this normal? (3/31/2010 11:16:23 PM)

If you don't have aircraft assigned to a Naval Search mission, no searching will occur.

39battalion -> RE: Air search - is this normal? (4/1/2010 2:43:58 AM)

The four hex automatic 360 search around bases with aircraft set to naval search irrespective of search arc settings is very, very important information.

I have had several puzzling examples of aircraft searching outside carefully set search arcs, and in each case they have located enemy TFs within a four hex radius of the aircraft base.

Is this four hex automatic search WAD ?

Thx

Does this apply to float planes and search planes launched from task forces as well?

39battalion -> RE: Air search - is this normal? (4/3/2010 2:01:29 AM)

Can anybody answer the questions asked in posts 9 and 10 above ?

Any assistance you can provide would be very much appreciated.

Tatoune -> RE: Air search - is this normal? (4/3/2010 4:06:16 AM)

my CV spoted a SS which was 3 hex away and my planes were not set to search there; start 180 end 290... and spoted 30 degree.

It would be great to have answers from the dev team.

You have this question in multiple threads and here is the answer from the other one.  Did you not like it?

within 4 hexes of a searching base you have a 360 degree search arc no matter what.

Tatoune -> RE: Air search - is this normal? (4/3/2010 5:09:19 AM)

I didn't see your post, and you dont have to be arrogant... but thanks Zace for your answer

zace -> RE: Air search - is this normal? (4/3/2010 5:55:51 AM)

Far from arrogant.  Just having the same question in multiple places makes it harder for the next person to search it :D  relax a bit just gettin on ya lol.

There was a large discussion on this the past week.  If you want to look it all up it might answer some of the questions you may have but havn't asked yet.

Well, I'm going to screenshot the "problem". Just to make sure that Bradfordkay, other players and me haven't been seeing pink elephants and other funny creatures [8D]

Screenshot #1: a submarine is detected

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Air search - is this normal? (4/3/2010 3:52:51 PM)

There is only one PBY-5A in the area. In Pago Pago. Look where it should be exploring. Also note (per above picture) that the sub is 7 hexes away Pago Pago... So no "4 hexes 360 degrees thing" [;)]

I am going to post these 2 pics in the tech forum.

Maybe they had their compasses installed backwards.
