Kung Karl -> Activate as 32-bit, reinstall as 64-bit possible? (1/6/2010 7:02:27 PM)

I just bought Windows 7 and have a question regarding the two diffrent versions.

I first installed the 64-bit version since that is the future but the first game i tried, company of heroes, didn't start. So, I reinstalled the 32-bit version.

I have not yet activated my copy since I want to know this first. If I activate my copy now with the 32-bit version installed will I later be able to switch to the 64-bit version or am I stuck with the 32-bit version?

As far as I know as long as only one copy is active, you can have either activated. Like you, I first had Vista 32bit installed and activated, then later switched to 64bit and activated it instead and had no problem. Personally, I have yet to encounter any issues with any games because of 64 bit, even old ones - in fact many games run better now on my Windows 7 64 system, RT2 and Combat Mission to name a couple. I don't think I will ever go back to 32bit because of the limited ram issue; I would check into administrator privileges/rights before a 32/64bit issue.

I'm running Win 7 Pro 64bit and have no problem running COH the impulsedriven version...just run the directx setup from Microsoft to make sure you have all the Directx updates...

I have the steam version and it just didn't start. Maybe it was the direct x drivers that wasn't up to date. Ahh, I don't want to reinstall windows yet again.

On thye other hand I do not think I will install more than my current 4GB RAM into this computer so I will probably go 64-bit with my next computer. WOn't miss the 64-Bit version then since the main upside I take it is the ability to add more RAM.

Emobama -> RE: Activate as 32-bit, reinstall as 64-bit possible? (1/7/2010 5:39:52 PM)

This is a good question and I am not sure if Microsoft will offer a clear answer either.  The major limiting factor may be what you actually have purchased.  I was researching this and read an OEM copy of Windows 7 is locked to the PC on which it is installed and cannot be transferred to a PC, nor can the motherboard be upgraded.  I find that wording to be ominous but I am not sure if it works in the real world.  If you have the OEM version then you should  be more cautious than if you purchased Window Ultimate Full.

Since most applications have not been written for 64 bit yet then you will probably not notice the difference but Adobe Photoshop will take advantage of it and additional memory.

Peter Fisla -> RE: Activate as 32-bit, reinstall as 64-bit possible? (1/7/2010 8:11:08 PM)

64bit version of Win 7 is not the same as 32bit version, the tips and tricks that work on 32bit version doesn't work on 64bit version.I have a feeling that Win7 will be the last 32bit version of their future OS. Also as you noticed some games and and others will not work in 64bit edition, however so far I have been pretty much happy. (I have laptop with 8Gb of ram and 1GB of video card). I have the Retail Win 7 Pro edition...

Emobama -> RE: Activate as 32-bit, reinstall as 64-bit possible? (1/7/2010 8:22:39 PM)

You are probably right since they are moving away from 32 bit processors. People want 64 bit processors and soon will be wanting 128 bit processors. There are very few apps that run in 64 bit and fewer still that take advantage of quad processors but when that is the standard that is what people will program for.

And I commend you for having a laptop with 8GB of ram and a GB video card. I missed this at first but even as a desktop these are good specs. For a laptop those are excellent specs. [:)]

I think the future is in multi-core CPUs who knows when we will see 128 bit CPUs for public. The problem is that hardware is evolving too fast for software to catch up.

Well the funny thing is I live in a condo where space is important and I figured....what the hell I mostly play FPS on PS3 now anyway and my computer is only for development, and wargames. And I'm got sick and tired of upgrading desktops and having desktop with 12 fans in my bedroom (was driving my GF crazy) so I have decided to get something that is strong today and will last me a few years. So I bought Dell Precision Mobile workstation M6400. 2 Hard disk slots with Raid controller. I bought the memory separately as Dell would charge me arm and leg for that. The laptop can actually take 16GB of DDR3...so I'm good for a while. It plays Crysis with all graphics maxed out so I'm cool for a few years :) Been running Ubuntu 64 and Win 7 Pro bit64 for a while no...no problem, all my games including Close Combat 1 works well. With my jumbo 747 desktop gone...it's nice to hear myself think again! I won't go back to desktop anymore...

Peter

I agree with you for everything.  Most of my game playing is on an XBOX 360 now. It is not because I do not have games for the PC just sitting around, I just think the interface is great and I like that there are no problems.  It is just easy.

Close Combat 1 runs fast for me.  How do you slow it down?  It is a great game and to me one of the great leaps forward in gaming.  I liked how you could use points in Close Combat 2 to purchase units from a fixed menu and pricing.  I much prefer a system like that than I do a resource gathering RTS.

I just use the slow speed in CC1, you can set this up in the preferences. Yeah it's not perfect and because I think Directx 3/4 was used in CC1 sometimes I have map redraw problem...this happens if I scroll too much LOL!

One other thing I told myself is, NO GAMES WITH SECUROM/STARFORCE and other evil DRM (exception: STEEM or IMPULSE) PERIOD!!! That meant I had to buy COH, Witcher(Impulse)and Mass Effect(was on Steem for $4.99) again but it's well worth.

I was thinking about getting Mass Effect from junk2drive, errr direct2drive . It's $19 on D2D again, but there may be another sale soon, somewhere.
Does it have any replay value?
Is it a RPG? 1st person or 3rd person? I am not sure what it is, if I'm looking at the few screenshots that are available.

Mass Effect is essentially RPG Knights of the Old Republic but in different Sci-Fi setting and of course better graphics.

If you have a retail upgrade or full version, then yes you can switch from 32 to 64 bit. I installed Vista 32 and moved to Vista 64, but I had to call Microsoft to activate the 64 version. They will ask if your still using the 32 bit version. I'm not as I run 64 bit on all my gaming computers.

It's 3rd person, right? Do you have to control the entire party, or does the AI take over the other characters?

I don't remember exactly it's been a while since I played KOTOR...though you can search some websites for reviews and I'm sure youtube will have some videos to show you.

I was trying to squeeze some info about Mass Effect (eg. if it has some replay value) out of you, but I'll give up. [:)]
Thank you for your replies, though.
