1) The Oahu CD is one LCU with, I think, the max number of kinds of devices spannning a huge range of size and capability.

Which makes me wonder if anyone has tried adjusting the CD unit itself? Perhaps those disparate devices would perform better if they weren't all grouped together?

Perhaps there is a shortage of slots, but if not, even as "chrome" it might be nice to see the various forts and batteries.

Bullwinkle,

The point I'm making is there are a certain category of units called "forts" or "fortresses" that have fixed guns in CD roles, and I'd expect they would have more advanced FC systems than the more mobile units have.  If it were possible to give those units with CD guns a firing bonus against invaders, it might help reduce the problem we're seeing right now.  If you disagree with this, then what is YOUR suggestion to try and fix this?

I'm simply saying that on a technical basis using the strings "fort" or "fortress", as found in the DB, to call a sub-routine doesn't necessarily lead one to a highly evolved, sea-side base hex. It can lead one to Dehli. Other bases which did have these defense features, like Oahu, aren't called either term in the DB and would miss having the sub-routine called. I was speaking to a technical, code-type issue with the suggestion.

If you sort the Artillery unit type (the yellow selections across the top of the Land Unit window) into Arty and CD unit types (left-most column), about 50% by eyeball are either forts or fortresses in the LCU name. Most are nothing like what you're suggesting. Some have no tube guns at all. I didn't realize this until I went digging into the list. CD units are the forgotten few in my games. Until this thread I had never really looked at TOEs, names, national differences, etc.

Over the course of a week plus on this, I've come to the conclusion that it's better to leave things alone and use HRs if one fears Japanese mischief. Overall, as others have siad, I think that an interesting game can be achieved if the Japanese player does try to take Oahu. He might not get it, he might get it with huge casualties, and then what does he do with it? If it's Jan or Feb 1942, the Allied player has ten months to act to prevent an auto-vicotry, and tying up 300+ plus ships on the eastern map has to mean the Japanese aren't doing something they ought to be doing elsewhere. It's a different kind of game, but still very interesting.

If that doesn't suit, HRs could run the gamut from "Attack no hex the RL Japanese didn't" to a mid-point where Oahu or other RL "fortresses" like Singapore by sea, might be attackable, but only with transport TF's totaling 30 ships (35, 40, 45 . . .) or less in the hex at once. This reduces the "offload wave" we've been discussing and gives the CD LCUs many kicks at different cats. If you can take PH after 8-9 days of continuous offloading, with Allied responses from the West Coast and interim land attacks by well-supplied American LCUs on Oahu while you build numbers and try to un-disrupt them, then I think you deserve to have it.

But the kind of changes being discussed, done to punish PBEM-only, early war exploits, risks really breaking the game later on, for the reasons I and others tried to outline. Eliminating the Japanese submarine doctrine toggle has had some consequences perhaps the devs didn't foresee, but it's the way things are. When you put that ahistorical truth up against an inflexible, finite Allied OOB, you have to be careful with any other fundamental changes you make to casualty-producing pieces of the model.

John Lansford -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/13/2010 10:28:36 PM)

Bullwinkle,

I kind of doubt that anyone would need to worry about the Delhi fortress firing on an amphibious TF trying to unload troops.  If the fortresses don't have CD guns at all, then they don't get the bonus; how difficult is that?

"But the kind of changes being discussed, done to punish PBEM-only, early war exploits..."

Really?  It kind of breaks the realism for me, a non "PBEM-only" player, to know that if I were to play the Japanese I could invade Singapore, Bataan and Pearl Harbor with relative impunity early in the war.

Similarly, I see no reason to fear that enhancing dug in, fixed fortifications a defense bonus risks "breaking" the game later on for the Allies.  There's a reason why the Allies sent BB's along with invasion fleets, and also avoided the kinds of defenses found at Singapore and Bataan; they were tough to defeat and the risk of heavy damage was too high.  Now the game does not reflect that; just send a large invasion force to any base and you can take it with minimal casualties.

I see you believe there's no problem, which is not really a surprise since that's been your position all along.  I also remember you're arrogant enough to believe you're correct even when everyone else disagrees to you, so again, not really a surprise.  I see little reason to discuss this issue any longer with you.

Having multiple fixed CD units at Pearl Harbor seems to me to be as valid a suggestion as having two fixed positions at Sydney. Fort Kamehameha could be one, and a general "Oahu defense CD" could be another.

I am going to fiddle around with a test change to Bataan and launch an invasion there. I'm not really up on slot rules, so I hope it will work. I will also assign competent commanders. Two versions: One with smaller units broken down according to Fort TOE's per Niehorster, and then a version grouped by gun type. Using Niehorster's more generous number will make the test more comparable to the Oahu CD unit.

Sigh. It's a CODE thing, OK? How does the game know it's a "CD gun"? Because it's in an LCU with a CD tag in the DB. And the Dehli, Bangalore, etc. bases HAVE CD LCUs. even though they're up to thousands of miles inland. The code is stupid; it does what it's told. If you institute any "CD bonus" CD LCUs are going to execute it.

If it's a choice between your sense of realism and breaking my game on every amphib invasion I have to do to win, I'm going with my game. YMMV. If you're playing the Japanese against the Allied AI and you can't stop yourself from invading PH, you might need therapy more than you need code alterations.

If you disagree with my analysis, fine. I've offered interim solutions. I also don't want the devs tied up on this for months when there are other enhancments that they could be working on. Again, to each his own.

Clearly you haven't read the whole thread if you think everyone disagrees with me.

So you're going to take your ball and go home because we disagree. Whatever. As I said last week, the green button is there if you don't want to play.

Feinder -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 1:50:49 AM)

Just be aware that splitting units into smaller ones (as being suggested by splitting the Oahu forts), increases their overall survivability.

Disruption, fatigue, morale etc degradation is applied to a unit, and if Big-Unit-1 is attacked and suffers 30% disruption, the aggregate affect is ~greater~ than if you have Sub-Unit-1a and Sub-Unit-1b. Only one of the sub-units will suffer the primary attack, and will suffer disruption.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing to split up the Oahu forts. But just be careful of too much of a good thing. When doing my Midway scenario for WitP, I had included as separate LCUs what amounted to a company of Raiders, and a understrength attachemnt of AAA (beyond the standard TOE of the USMC Def Btn). While it was historically accurate (as these were indeed separate formations, albeit understrength), the effect was that it made it extremely difficult to inflict casualties on the Midway garrison because the now there were 2x additional targets to absorb attacks.

John Lansford -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 1:59:34 AM)

Feinder,

I think, at least in respect to the Oahu defenses, that that's one of the conditions that made those coastal defenses so formidable.  They were spread out all over the southern half of the island, knocking one out really didn't affect the others, and the command/control was so dispersed it also would have been difficult to knock out.

Personally, I would separate the 'fixed' defenses (the 12" guns and mortars, the 14" and 16" guns plus the smaller 3" and 5" weapons) from the more mobile but still dedicated coast defense weapons (the 8" railroad guns, the 240mm howitzers, and the 155mm guns), mainly because the 'fixed' ones were at least partially hardened and more difficult to disable than the ones out in the open.

Central Blue -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 4:33:53 AM)

Well, I did a basic chrome style edit of Manila Bay/Bataan defenses by creating Forts Frank, Mills, Drum, and Hughes in the Bataan hex according to info at Coast Artillery Studies Group and The Fall of the Philippines, by Louis Morton. I gave them all good stock commanders and increased their prep points to 99 since they have been prepping since before WWI. I also modified the 4th Marines to more closely match D type TOE, rather than a reinforced RLT. Like I said, chrome.

Unfortunately, I don't have a place to stick the files where anyone else could get them to play around with it. I haven't played the Japanese in a long while, so I don't know how long it will take to generate an AAR. But If I understand the test, basically I need to load up a bunch of ships, assign some small escorts, and expect to sail in with ease. Given the paucity of ground forces in that hex to begin with, if the guns don't stop them, they'll be ashore with ease.

We experimented with this when first laying out the LCUs for AE. We also tried the other extreme (combining Harbor Defenses, HQs and permanent base forces into one massive blob.) It does make a difference -- it is easier to disrupt a bunch of guns in one CD unit then if they were spread out in several LCUs. But it wasn't seen as a huge issue at the time -- especially as we had to squeeze all the US LCUs into about 1,000 slots. We economized where we could.

But here the major issue -- if it is in fact representative of how CD guns normally engage their targets -- does not appear to be caused by excessive disruption. It appears that every CD gun fires simultaneously at the same target, until they run out of ammo. In the first post, we see that all 12 "batteries" (weapon slots) fired together at the same 9 ships. If each battery had engaged a separate target, there is a maximum possible 108 targets they could have engaged. Not all of them would have sunk, of course, but the Japanese would have taken a hard hit to their merchant marine in order to get ashore.

However, I am willing to bet that the simple change I described above would be devilishly difficult to code. And the unrealistic ability to swamp defenders (CD guns and ground units alike) by partially loading dozens or hundreds of ships so they can all unload simultaneously, is left over from WitP.

That all looks excellent, except for the D-type TOE for the "Horse Marines". There was nothing standard about the 4th Marines in the PI. They were way understrength -- organized into two battalions (instead of three) each with two companies (ditto) of two platoons (ditto again). After the war began they were fleshed out with Marine base guards, sailors from the Cavite garrison, Army aviators and support personnel who no longer had planes to fly/support, and weaponless Anti-aircraft artillerymen (army and marine), until they had four battalions and were overstrength.

A historic note -- the 4th Marine Regiment was supposed to be in China. But for several months before Pearl Harbor, Admiral Hart was delaying all reinforcements in the PI, and refusing to send them forward to China, until eventually, there were more regimental marines in the PI than China! The US suceeded in evacuating most of the Marines from China to the PI before the war began, but ships to pick up the rest of the regiment were still enroute when the war began.

From Osperys Fortress series, I apoligise for the quality of the image, making it fir in my Picture hosting service degraded the quality of the image.

Realy Only the South Shore was covered to any apricable extent early on, the Blue arc's would the ones present at wars start the others were built during the war, and many never finished by wars end.

Nice map, Brady. Too bad they didn't put an overlay of the suitable landing beaches on it. I have a general idea, but it would be interesting to see what the military minds of the day considered to be the vulnerable beaches.

Central Blue -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 7:31:28 AM)

hey BH,

I was in a bit of a hurry. I wasn't anymore wrong than what was there to begin with.

quote:

I understand that. Everyone has their favorite unit that can't be left out.

And some folks (who are usually some sort of expert at something) have to play "user" during testing, and then the real users get a hold of it.

And it won't be me refereeing the wrassling match between the folks that program and the folks that build the OOB's and TOE's and the folks that communicate to the buyers. [:)] And since no one is likely to ask my opinion on resolving that thorny issue of the age, I'll just keep my opinions to myself. [;)]

Anyway, the AAR follows for the "chrome" version. I can't say I put a lot of energy into either side as a player. I put some planes on search for the Allies and sent out expendable surface units; and for the Japanese, I gathered up a bunch of already formed convoys and assorted TF's, and voila...

I was not able to form a TF bigger than 100 ships. Did I see a claim about 300-350? Well, maybe I did something "wrong." But, on the other hand, I heard that it was so easy that nothing short of re-coding could fix the issues.

The second test would allocate guns by similar type.

Can we say: "Shot to pieces ma?"

Will they take Bataan. Yeah. But at What cost?

Nice map, Brady. Too bad they didn't put an overlay of the suitable landing beaches on it. I have a general idea, but it would be interesting to see what the military minds of the day considered to be the vulnerable beaches.

Well I think the obvious point is that no mater whear they landed that they would realy only face a fraction of the guns. Which is true no mater when or whear a landing were to take place.

Also Unless absolutly nesscessary landings would take place whear their were no guns.

AT Rabaul for example the Japanese chose laning sights that were not covered by the CD guns and the ones that were, were undertaken at night so the guns would be of no concern, and their back up plan involved simply moving theirs Ships out from under the guns.

The Japanese prefered to land at night *, and unapoased, and at various spots along the beach, this was done to preserve unit coheashion during the initial landings, folow on landings were conducted around the clock.

The Folowing Link Details the Japanese Operations to secure various points in the SWPA :

.................

My Favorate pasage from the Rabaul section:

The 1st Battalion of the Kusunose Unit, aboard the transports as the 1st Squad, entered the anchorage at 10.20 pm charged with the task of occupying the Praed Point battery and Lakunai airfield. The Praed Point battery was equipped with ten artillery guns. The Japanese therefore planned to move the entire convoy back a further 5 kilometres from the shore if Praed Point was not occupied by 4 am owing to the danger of the battery attacking the transport convoy. The commander of the 2nd Company, while heading for Praed Point onboard the transports, was told: "If you cannot occupy the battery by 4 am, then you must cut open your bowels and die!”

Thier were realy only two 6 inch guns, and they were eveuanitaly found to have been knocked out. By the Air Raid the day before.

John Lansford -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 9:55:18 AM)

The only good landing sites on Oahu were the ones covered by the guns, though.  The North Shore has very strong surf nearly year round, and especially in the winter, with waves well over 20' high.  Even the Marines felt that an amphibious landing on that side of the island was nearly impossible, but since a small scale raiding party was feasible, the Army eventually put some mobile gun positions and FC systems on that side of the island.  The landing sites the Marines considered most likely were on the south, SW and SE corners of the island, and all those were well covered by CD guns.

I hear what you're saying about the number of guns capable of firing at any one landing attempt; would it be possible to introduce a random percentage (say, from 50% to 80%) that would control how many guns are actually able to fire at any one TF?

The defences were designed against a BB port raid not against a landing , the Northern side is not at all covered.... Seems a good place to land .

All of Oahu has nice beaches but the terrain is the middle is rough.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Oahu&sll=46.214761,1.57736&sspn=19.063336,50.405273&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Oahu,+Pearl+City,+Honolulu,+Hawaii+96782&ll=21.686941,-157.948551&spn=0.050007,0.098448&t=h&z=14

So this basically mean Japan can land facing no major CD fire .... unlike Bataan and Singapore.

Marty A -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 10:02:11 AM)

If i read map correct that only shows 8 inch and above fire nothing smaller. it also does not account for artillery units that could be fired anywhere and move if need.

Brady -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 10:22:33 AM)

From the same source:

Much of this was to be tweaked by the start of the war and some removed but it gives an idea of what was their.

The army did take the threat of landings seriously on the "Other Shores" as they put some planing into defensive posations to cover the enteriour,

Something else to consider is that most of these weapons were in Open Posations and would of been easy meat for Air atacks.

The Japanese also knew whear everything was, as evidanced by the fixed gun posations being marked on the maps found in downed Japanese planes.

John Lansford -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 12:39:56 PM)

Brady,  your source is incorrect about the # of 16" guns.  There were two batteries of two each, one set near the harbor entrance on the west side, another pair north of Barber's Point that had near 360 degree coverage of the island.  That latter pair were built in secret (no civilian contractors) and were located on an ancient volcanic hill.  The site is now a state park and shows all the gun positions.

You're right about them being open to air attack, but so were most of Bataan's gun positions and repeated air attacks didn't destroy many of them before the position surrendered.  The 155mm and mobile 8" gun and howitzers would have been hard to find as well.

Also, the North Shore was lightly defended because the surf is incredibly rough up there. Even using specialized landing craft, the entire coast was considered unsuitable for an amphibious landing. There are reefs and very little accessible beach up there; if you do a Google search for Oahu you'll see there's even now very little areas accessible by boat up there.

Central Blue -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 2:09:16 PM)

speaking of mines...

Ok. I forgot to save last night, so had to re-run the pre-turn save. And a lot of the DMS types were toasted.

The surging subs and some air power show up, along with the 3 PT's and the mighty Tanager.

But he did take Bataan on the second day of the invasion.

__________________________________________________________

Over the two day period, 17 ships were lost to mines. As of December 16 the Japanese have lost 193 ships valued at 1,594 points. Losses near Iba, Clark, and Bataan run to about 10.5 pages, so no screen shots.

Aside from the issue of coastal defense units, what I note from the post that started this thread is that mines played almost no role in that invasion, and that there was no surface action at any point, so apparently no ships on station like routine PT's, ASW assets, or mine sweepers like I had at Bataan. Aside from the effectiveness of multiple small forts with good commanders, it is worth noting the disruptive effect of minimal surface forces and the importance of defensive mining.

I'm going to check on who was commanding Fort Drum, and find out what he eats for breakfast.

Terser combat events reports for the two days:

Central Blue -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 2:33:18 PM)

Since Fort Drum was the top shooter, who was in command?

A fellow by the name of Lt. Col. W. McCormick:

leadership: 62, Inspiration: 68, Naval: 30, Land: 77, Administration: 66, Aggression: 54

Next up, at Fort Mills, Col. May

leadership: 44, Inspiration: 53, Naval: 21, Land: 55, Administration: 59, Aggression: 60

And big oopsie, I've got the numbers way wrong on the guns for Fort Drum. I forgot to check the second page of the Manila CD unit I over-wrote.

How embarrassing can it get![&:]

Still, it does show what a competent commander can do with a lot of guns. [:)]

oldman45 -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 2:38:57 PM)

For all the damage that the invasion fleet took, I didn't notice any causultie among the invading infantry. So if I am reading this right, the ships unloaded then they were destroyed by mines or guns. Is that correct?

John Lansford -> RE: Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results (1/14/2010 3:00:33 PM)

I wonder just how big the minefield off of Bataan was; it looked like the invading ships hit about every mine in the field.

What did you give Fort Drum for weaponry?  The fort had 4 14" guns in two dual turrets and two dual 6" guns firing from the 'sides' of the fort, plus some 3" AA guns.  There's an interesting website on the construction and history of Fort Drum here: http://concretebattleship.org/

Looks like there were some minor casualties caused by coastal gunfire during the off-loading. As I remember the screens flying by during the turns, more were lost during unloading, but those don't seem to be represented in the yards of screen I posted.

I'll let those concerned argue about the "accuracy" of that. I'll settle for what LTC McCormick did with the guns of the original CD unit for Bataan. My attitude is that if the invader is willing to lose that many ships that early in the game, more power to him.

Anyway, I am going to assign better commanders to the other forts, correct the numbers for Fort Drum, and subtract the 3" and 155's into their own separate batteries because they don't seem to have joined the party at quite the same rate as the naval rifles. But that will be later today.

However, I am coming to the conclusion that the CD's aren't so broke that they require the programmers to get involved. Minor tweaks to the OOB's and prep points would cover most of the problems that couldn't be solved by players assigning competent commanders, putting out mines (plenty at Pearl), and having standard security assets afloat at any base they seriously intend to defend. At Pearl I would have everything that floated formed up if only to add their AA fire.

She had all of that, plus whatever was on the second page of the original Bataan CD unit. [:)]

There are 966 mines, including those added by the subs. But there were approximately 200 ships in the various TF's So there are still more out there for any mine sweepers he has left.

Something else to consider is that most of these weapons were in Open Positions and would of been easy meat for Air attacks.

The Japanese also knew where everything was, as evidenced by the fixed gun positions being marked on the maps found in downed Japanese planes.

One would think so..., but all the evidence from the Philippines Campaign says "No.., they weren't". The Japs had free rein to bomb the Manila Bay Forts for FOUR MONTHS prior to their surrender (and added heavy artillery to the mix during the last 30 days); yet only two of the guns were knocked out.

US discovered the same think at Sweinfurt..., they bombed the ball bearing works, but the massive machinery that actually made the bearings proved virtually impervious to bombs and was back in action as soon as it could be dug out of the rubble.

Can you divulge anything about range is handled in the CD code? Is every device in the CD unit considered to have the range to hit any target in the same hex? Or are there range checks or randoms so that some ships are out of range for the devices, like mortars, with shorter ranges than others, like 16-in guns?

I've only seen a few ranges in the combat reports--12,000, 3000, and 1000 yards. Are those window-dressing or is there really a range determination in the routines?

Before we hand out the awards, if there is a way to test the CD's when the US invades in 43/45. Early war invasions are a bit bias to the japanese because of the amphib bonus.
