Anguille -> Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/19/2010 1:57:04 PM)

I am about to finally purchase a game on the Pacific theater but hesitate between the various games:

- War in the Pacific
- Carriers at War
- Warplan Orange.

I have Uncommon Valour which i still haven't really played.

Thanks

It depends on how in depth you want to go. Playing Uncommon Valour will give you somewhat of an idea of how WitP(I have the old one) plays but on a vastly greater scale.
Dont know about the Matrix Version of CaW as I only played the old one but its a 100 times easier than WitP. Thats my guess based on the older version I have.

Personally it depends on how much free time you have because you really wont be doing much else but play WitP. But its one hell of a ride.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/19/2010 3:50:53 PM)

I think you ought to get on Uncommon Valor's case...it's a great wee game. Indepth enough to keep you busy and not swamp you. It will also give you an idea of how War in the Pacific works.

Carriers at War I couldn't recommend. I bought it and was extremely disappointed with the tactical options and scenarios available. It may be better now, but it wasn't worth the money when it was released.

Seriously - use and be happy with Uncommon Valor, then come back and try one of the other options!

Feltan -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/19/2010 3:58:46 PM)

Anguille,

It depends almost entirely on how insane you are, and to a lesser extent if you plan on having a life outside of wargaming.

Listen to the Judge. Play what you have, and then come back and decide how far you want to jump.

Feltan

And if you're short on budget, you can always download "Pacific War" for free.

Anguille -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/20/2010 9:04:29 AM)

Thanks for the replies so far...can't say you're really encouraging me [;)]

Honestly...if i was a sane person, i'd stop buying games cos i have enough games for a lifetime (that and being married and having a child)!

Uncommon Valour is on my list to play as i was a big fan of Task Force 1942 (anyone?).

Still, i wanted something covering the entire theater of the Pacific War. Is it possible to automate some aspects in WitP:AE or do you have to micromanage everything?

I have to say that i like Carriers...are they well represented in WitP:AE or they of little importance?

Thanks again

JudgeDredd -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/20/2010 9:21:42 AM)

lol - he said "is it possible to automate some aspects in WitP:AE" aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaha

Wouldn't have thought so...not much anyway (if anything). WitP genre is all about micro management from what I could tell, though I do not have AE.

As far as Carriers being well represented in AE - they're well represented in UV, so it stands to reason they are in AE, if not better.

yoshino -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/20/2010 9:34:21 AM)

If you don't have many time which is required to WitP,I suggest to buy War Plan Pacific.
This game can be shotly playing and has CV battles.

True...i almost forgot about that one. Is it good?

Lützow -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/20/2010 9:52:31 AM)

WPP is so pathetic in comparison to WitP AE, that it makes one feel sorry for the developer. [:(]

Just checked the promo video on youtube...it's very chess or Axis & Allies like...doesn't have to be bad if the AI is good but it's not really what i am looking for at the moment.

yoshino -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/20/2010 10:51:19 AM)

Well.I'm just compare WPP and WitP for actual playing time.
I think no one compare to WitP.But WitP also requires an ultimate free time.[;)]

Maybe, your best choice is ,as already said, playing UV short scenarios and master it.

Chuck Norris -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/20/2010 2:37:17 PM)

I've been eyeing HPS's Naval Campaigns: Guadalcanal for a while. Its between that and UV for my next wargame.

ezzler -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/21/2010 2:29:14 PM)

Get UV, its great.
Witp is the same thing but a bit more micro management. It uses the Sims 3 engine.
You get to play at the day to day level of everyone who took part in WW2.

Lützow -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/21/2010 3:57:51 PM)

WitP AE has a Guadalcanal scenario which roughly covers UV - but with a vast improved engine. In my opinion there is no need to settle for anything less, when one can have the best naval simulation. But each to his own for sure.

Well...War in the Pacific/AE is my suggestion for BEST Pacific theater game of all time, however, may I ask, why haven't you played Uncommon Valor yet? Are you just not that captivated by the game? If not, then WITP may not be your cup of tea.

I've just reinstalled UC and am busy learning the game. The problem with these types of games is not that they are not my cup of tea but that there's a long period of learning...i prefer to play. However, i am learning UC and believe that i will move to WITP when the time is right cos i like these monsters and want a serious/deep game on the Pacific War...

Cheers

SeaMonkey -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (1/22/2010 6:38:18 PM)

If you want something bridging the gap between WPP and WitP, then you might try the demo of Strategic Command, Pacific Theater, or wait for Storm over the Pacific.  SC has a very active modding community with an awesome editor, TOAW like, there are global variants of WW2 and operational level scenarios also, like Peleliu, Iwo, Okinawa, etc.

Totally disagree on 'pathetic'. It's certainly nowhere near as complex, but it plays a heck of a lot faster, is sensibly priced and is a nice enough little game IMHO. There's a demo, Anguille, so you can judge for yourself.

As to CaW I enjoyed it rather more than JD, I think, but its certainly not one of my my top Matrix purchases. Thing is, though, all the games are very different and it really comes down to what you want. WitP:AE is the 'best', most would probably agree, but you might well consider simply if you have the free time to do it justice.

Very generic on the eye candy.

Jutland is good, if you like to refight the battle repeatedly.

I agree with Judge completely. Uncommon Valor will whet your appetite for WitP, or it will help you understand that you really never will have enough time to play WitP. [;)]

gowtham -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (2/23/2010 4:17:07 AM)

Americans may be startled to pick up a 256-page book about the Pacific War and discover that Pearl Harbor isn't mentioned until page 135. That's a consequence of Ienaga's belief that the war actually began with the Japanese army's 1931 coup in Manchuria, which led inevitably to war with China, which in turn led to the wider war agaisnt the western Allies. Despite Japan's claims about liberating Asians from colonialism, its purpose in going to war was to obtain the raw materials with which to defeat China. That was one reason the Japanese treated the "liberated" peoples so badly--as badly as they treated their white PWs. Part of the blame goes to the Japanese military tradition, in which the officers were an elite and the troops were conscripted from the younger sons of tenant farmers. Brutality was the norm, and the enlisted men who stayed in the army and became sergeants were precisely those who would most brutalize the next batch of recruits. Draftees were called issen gorin--roughly, "penny postcards," because that was the cost and the method of obtaining one. Why husband the life of a soldier when he could be replaced for a penny? Ienaga explains that the enlisted soldiers were the bottom of the food chain, that they had no on upon whom to vent their brutality in return. During WWII, it was fashionable in the U.S. to show General Tojo as the Japanese dictator, making a trio with Germany's Hitler and Italy's Mussolini. But of course that was very far from true, as even American propaganda recognized, since sometimes the emperor Hirohito filled the same role. Ienaga is especially good at explaining this mystery, in which a dictator was imposed by a group of elder statesmen--then deposed when his usefulness was over. Tojo ruled the government and the army, but he never managed to rule the navy--he didn't even learn about the defeat at Midway until a month after four aircraft carriers and a major portion of the navy's fighter planes had gone to the bottom. This is a valuable book, one of only a half-dozen serious studies by Japanese scholars of World War II available in English. We didn't know our enemy in 1941; we hardly know him any better today.

I have several HPS titles, but I was very disapointed w/its "Canal game; there are very few scenarios as compared w/"Jutland".

I still own UV, which I find more engrossing than most HPS games.

SuluSea -> RE: Pacific War - what should i get and why? (2/24/2010 11:37:13 PM)

I like HPS Guadalcanal but UV has more replay value. It depends on what you're looking for. Guadalcanal is closer to Carriers at War IMO with CAW being the better game if it was my money. CAW and Guadalcanal are more beer and pretzels and UV a step up. Everyone may not feel that way however. Have fun.
